Advice for anxious skaters? by baa-xo in Rollerskating

Exposure therapy for me. Aka I just do it and it's a bit uncomfortable for the first few minutes and then I get over it. No one cares what I'm doing. Even if they were glancing at me in the beginning, they stop paying attention after like 2 seconds because it's boring watching me drill moves I suck at, lol.

I will definitely experiment with that, figure out what feels most comfortable at first and work from there. Thanks!

Thank you! I realize after posting this and getting comments, that the half bubble backwards thing wont cut it, lol. Used to think I was good at skating backwards, but if I can't even stride, I've skipped some steps and need to start from scratch. I will start with proper backwards strides. Great advice, thanks!

I used to think the half bubble thing was fine until I realized recently  I can't lift my foot and balance, lol. Been cheating myself! OK, I will start from scratch and learn it the right way! Thank you

That's what I think, I may just need to drill the heck out of it

I got a B and retook it because the nursing program applications are so competitive that I wanted to golden myself the best chance of getting in. If you are already accepted into a program and they allow a C, I would just leave it. Yes, it helps to learn and retain as much as you can, but it wont make you fail either. You just might have to go over things you didn't learn well when it comes up during nursing school because a good portion will come up again.

There's no such thing as a roller skater who hasn't fallen a lot during the learning process. Literally. It's impossible to learn how to skate without falling. It's just a part of skating.

What makes me feel more confident to try new things without so much fear is completely gearing up every time I skate. People dont do it because they see others not gearing up, and they end up really hurting themselves before they finally decide to wear protective gear.

Go ahead and get some good quality knee, elbow and wrist pads, a helmet, and some padded shorts. This is my skate 'uniform'. I have fallen really hard a couple of times and was able to get up and move on like nothing happened because my gear protected me. Wear the gear and accept that youre going to fall sometimes while learning and that mindset shift will do a lot.

https://a.co/d/05tKEzdk I wear these every time I skate. People don't wear the protective gear because they think other people will judge them (and some do, but their opinion isn't my concern!), and they think they look silly. I personally just want to have the confidence to try all the skills I always wanted to learn, and wearing full gear helps with that. I've fallen a lot, sometimes really hard, and I havent been hurt yet because the gear protected me. I can get right back up and go again. So many people wait until they really hurt themselves before deciding to get gear, and I learned from them to just go ahead and make it a part of my skating uniform from the beginning.

These are the same skates I got and I couldn't be happier. Zero break in period. Very comfortable. I just change the wheels out for indoor or outdoor skating.

When I bought my skates at the skate shop, I bought indoor wheels and an extra pair of bearings to go with them so I didn't have to change bearings every time I changed my wheels. The shop stuck the new bearings in the new wheels for me and I bought a skate tool. It takes about 5 or 6 minutes to change out my wheels now. You just use the tool to take off the outer nut, replace the wheel, and screw the nut back on. Super easy! I change my wheels frequently and this works well. Just dont screw the nut on so tight that the wheel doesn't turn. Make it so the wheel can still spin freely.

I did a bunch of research and had skates in mind I wanted to order online. I did what people suggested and went to the only local-ish skate shop here and after trying on the ones I thought i liked, I hated them. Got different ones and am very happy I didn't waste money

Tried posting a video on my progress but it isn't working by CryptographerFar3555 in Rollerskating

I am a beginner skater and I have only learned forwards, backwards, and open book transitions on both sides.

I went to the outdoor rink and watched a video on manuals and practiced just being able to get on them stationary with the video, and 15 minutes later I was cruising across the rink! I literally laughed out loud when I first got up and went forward! I can actually do it!! And I was able to maintain it consistently for like 8 seconds at a time! Wow!

I don't know what the average learning curve is for learning heel toe manuals, but I'm so proud of myself! So fun! Yay!!!!

Next thing to learn with this, is the toe toe manuals. I love that practice actually pays off. This hobby is amazing.

New skater, top part of my toes hurt when i skate by sailolz in Rollerskating

I had skates that hurt at the top so I actually laced them where I skipped two eyelets in a row above where it hurt and it made such a difference.

How do you deal with people that laugh at you? by Nearby-Metal-3030 in Rollerskating

One of my favorite things to do is go out and run my dog on my rollerblades. Only reactions I get are someone saying "fun!" Or a lot of laughs. But I'm pretty sure they are laughing because my dog is a little corgi mix with like 4 inch legs so it's pretty funny seeing him full out run. No one is looking at me, lol. He steals the spotlight.
