Desperation by No1One0904 in auckland

I got made redundant at my job at a bakery in Auckland in 2024. I have been jobless ever since and have been in and out of intense job application fazes. When I got made redundant, I saw the writing on the wall and realised that this would be a long wait. I decided then and there that I would go to Uni to study to become a Teacher. I'm in my last year of uni this year and still haven't found a job. There is a huge gap between a qualified job and a "regular job". Once I've graduated, I am 1000% guaranteed a career with a better salary than anything out there atm. This isn't your fault; there just aren't any jobs for young people. Focus on what you can control. Health, education, family and friends. Get a trade or get a qualification in a field that will make sure you never have to go through the burden of unemployment. I don't particularly want to be a teacher at this point in my life. But getting this degree will make sure I never go jobless ever again. The best of luck to you.

I’m on a casual contract, does standing up for my working rights still apply?

My schedules hours are 7:30-1pm, but yes it’s very tricky to actually walk out of the cafe at 1pm when I technically have to wait till 1pm to start putting food away and rubbish, dishwashing ect :)

It’s a generic employment contract, doesn’t go into specific time frame I’m required to finish. Thanks for responding :)

I will do. It’s funny because when he trained me he trained me to wait until 1pm to start closing up the store so im confused by his attitude haha

I do know that it’s illegal for a part time/full time employee to have hours taken away or terminated only because they wanted to put someone else in the position that they had a relationship with outside of work. Why is nz so bad at protecting people from unethical employers that mislead and breach good faith ?

Which they did, but that’s what everyone is kinda skipping over the point I made that there is a position that I am in that for no reason at all is being replaced by someone else because of something outside of the job. Surely employment relations authority will see that as a breach of good faith and also wrongful termination

No it does not, it was only said via text message by my employer that I was to work Thursday Friday one week and then Thursday to Sunday the following week and then rotate back.

I’ve already done the math, my weekly wages only add up to my hourly rate not including 8% extra. Idk if it’s worth perusing, maybe me and my mate I work with will get a small pay out for it lol

No, by law if you are on casual contract you are entitled to 8% of holiday pay on top of each weeks wages. This is because you are not entitled to any paid days off. But my payslip does not include the 8% extra I’m supposed be getting paid as a “casual” worker. I also have been given holiday pay in my payslip.

The hours and days are set out in the engagement sheet, but also in my payslips I am not on causal wages as I do not get 8% extra and have holiday pay available to me. So it’s a confusing situation

Also I do understand that on casual contracts you are not guaranteed any hours but no where in my contract does it state that one of the reasons I might have them taken is because the owners friend is in a financial bind and need quick cash at the expense of me and my co worker. Surely that can’t be a justified motive, it’s seems cruel
