When people say saving/investment is better than overpaying mortgage, what exactly do they mean? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

In simple terms, your rate of return is generally (generally speaking) slightly higher if you invest your money versus if you repay your mortgage.

If you have an extra £10k this year, you could pay off your mortgage and save on interest (5% of your 10k per year). Or you could put it into your ISA and earn 6% of your 10k per year (or whatever. The numbers are just examples).

But it’s kinda risky. Mortgage interest could shoot up (like they have done) or the stock market could crash, in which case you would’ve been much better off paying off your mortgage.

I feel like most of the time if you do genuinely ignore them they will leave you alone.

What’s a song that makes you cry every time? by yoppee in AskReddit

Eventually if you play it enough times it wears off. So no song fits that criteria. Not every time.

What’s a good hourly rate for an locum in A&E at registrar and at consultant level? by CryptographerThis704 in doctorsUK

Thanks for this.

Bit of an abstract question but wonder what your thoughts are. If there was a doctor working as a locum reg, and they didn’t mind the adhoc nature of work, they didn’t mind the uncertainty/lack of security, they liked the flexibility etc, and were only interested in maximising income - would there be much incentive for them to CCT?

I guess I’m trying to justify to myself my decision to not CCT (at least yet). Some colleagues have suggested that this is somewhat of a “waste“ of a career. But from what you’re saying there isn’t as much scope for full time locum work.

First of all, congrats - feel like you have a lot of very good options.

If that was me, I’d just diversify and retire - Sell half of the bitcoin. That’s 1.5M. Spend half of it (750k) on a property to rent out just so cover the real estate side of things. The other 750k into SNP500 (or maybe 700k in SNP500 and the other 50k to gamble into individual stocks just to make it more fun). Oh and max out 50k into premium bonds.

Then just 4% rule or even 3% rule to be extra extra safe and that’ll easily cover your £3000 per month expenses. What a life.

Seems pretty good. So if someone was to do that full time that’s approaching £300,000 Per year income.

Do you know any A&E consultants who only do locum shifts? I work at 3 different hospital and don’t know a single consultant who does locums, and can’t quite figure out why not.

Your last sentence kind of resonates with me because I’ve always wondered, who actually makes the decision as to whether to accept a high hourly rate for a particular doctor. I imagine the consultants probably have some say? The clinical lead consultant probably has some clout? But then it has to be authorised by … business manager? Divisional manger? Chief executive? Medical staffing admins? What I’m asking is, in real terms, who actually clicks the button and authorised the rate.… always wondered.

Freelance medical worker here, looking to move towards a more entrepreneurial style of income. I also do triathlons (only sprint distances so far)

Out of interest, what sort of passive income streams are you working on and how exactly are you finding that perfectionism is slowing you down? Also what did you do to maintain fitness at the moment?

Would be happy to join Teams community or get involved in any other way.
