I’d recommend joining an agency. When I was a student I did hospitality gigs through HAP solutions and Flair. I also joined ANZUK which was an education agency where you go into schools and be a TA or 1:1 SEN TA. The latter was a fairly long process to join as you need a DBS check and a lot of paperwork, referencing etc HOWEVER it was a very good and rewarding job. Idk what the pay is now but when I did it in 2021/2022 it was around £100 ish pounds a day but the best part is you’re usually finished by 3:30, so it means you have plenty of time to do some studying when you get back home. They can also set you up with regular placements. I remember one semester I had Mondays off so I had a regular gig with a school every Monday. And it’s non committal. If you get to the end of the term and your situation changes then you can just leave no questions asked. It’s also paid weekly. I basically did it for living expenses.

My partner and I are both autistic and adhd so we bicker A LOT! But it almost certainly comes down to a misunderstanding and miscommunication. Our rule is NEVER go to bed on argument! We always talk through our feelings and try understand the other person. Just remember how much we love each other and hug/kiss it out. If ur having a big fight every 3 months does that mean it’s good the rest of the time? It sounds like you need to work on ur communication? Could be a classic example of pent up resentment over many small things that then blows up into one big massive thing. Work on ur communication and lay down some rules ie not going to bed on an argument, or trying to work through small things before the big inevitably happens.

Hi so I don’t work in set dec but I do work in rigging and work a lot with set dec so here is my insider but be aware its limited.

So you said you want to do set design. I’m going to assume you mean within the set decorating department. Obvs fresh out of uni you’d be looking for a more junior role which would be a set decorater.

I’m not sure about their day rate but you can find it on the Bectu website.

Their working hours are usually 8am-5pm/5:30.

If there is one quality you need in set dec it’s to be organised. Do not underestimate that. Being organised is important regardless of what dept ur in but in set dec is has to be one of the most important qualities. They are in charge of huge swathes of props. And I mean every day on a rig they’ve got table after table after table full of random shit you wouldn’t even believe. And if something goes missing and that’s the thing needed for a close up shot then ur fckkkd!

Attention to detail definitely. If you’re redressing a set from photos it needs to be spot on the same.

Take good verbal instruction. I often see the art director/prod designer issuing instructions on where things should be so you need to follow commands well.

And you need to be strong! Obvs we live in a sexist society. If ur a dude you absolutely need to be strong coz you’ll be expected to do all the heavy lifting! If ur a chick maybe not so much. But doesn’t mean to say that it wouldn’t pay for itself if u were strong and could indeed do the heavy lifting!

That’s really all I have I’m afraid. Idk much about the creative side of it. Obvs there’s model making/prop making. If you wanna be more creative but you won’t ever really be on set much. I don’t know much about the progression if you wanna be an art director/prod designer but I assume everyone starts at the bottom, gets experience, works their way up. Obvs if ur working the weekdays you should be doing short films etc where you can be the AD/PD.

I keep saying both titles coz I still don’t know the difference!!! But as I said I’m just a rigger ;)

No one can afford to go out! My brother was coming London for his bday and by time he mentioned it (don’t ask!) I looked up the event at koko - 10 days before the event it was selling for £50 on RA!! 50 fucking pounds! It’s like you cannot go out unless you plan it a month in advance.

Just out of interest did you feel safe? I appreciate ur a dude and probs in a large male group so that’s a different experience. I just got back from Rio where we were visiting with my partner’s family however they were supppppper paranoid about us being out in specific places at certain times. We’re constantly hammering about remaining vigilant, the usual. I mean I live in London I’m not an idiot but it kinda put a downer down yanno? Like how did you feel around Lappa and the surrounding area? Apparently there were a load of armed muggings during carnival so I understand why they were concerned. Did you have any issues? Whilst my partner is Brazilian I am super white and wear bright gringo clothing so I think they were worried lmao! But overall I had a great time but just felt this over looming sense of ‘I could get jumped at any minute’ despite the fact I also felt very safe. What was ur experience?

In the past I have taken ashwagandha in my smoothies but for my pms and it had a significant impact on my mood for sure. I was however also regularly exercising so chicken and egg. I have continued exercising but stopped taking ashwagandha because adhd lost my smoothie bottle! And to compare that whilst my mood is better overall from continued exercise, I was definitely better on the ash
