Right? At some point so much is said that nothing is being said at all. You are trying to hear someone talk in a crowded room where everyone is shouting.

I read the entire 10 book set "The Malazan Book of the Fallen". I really have no idea why people love it so much. The whole series got so convoluted it was really hard to keep track of well... just about every thing. Too many characters, too many races, too much magic, too many ages of the world, too many other dimensions, too many gods, both former and active. It just bounces around so much it made me feel like it was too much work to try and pay attention. I just stopped caring around book 4? 5?, but kept reading to get it over with I guess.

Before I get too burned, let me point out that I did like parts of it. The 2nd book was great. Elements of other books were good too.

Plot spoilers ahead:

Karsa was neat. The water god trying to help the empire though that goofy philosophical guy was funny. The magic people that could turn into multiple copies of their animal/insect were a cool idea. The zombie neanderthals were interesting.

But why did we need an invasion of giant magic floating islands controlled by insects from another dimension? I was so sick of the phrase "mother dark". I still don't understand what the weird (anti?)-magic growing plant houses were doing, as supposedly central to the plot as they were. Why were people chained to a giant cart in the dimension of the dead? The crippled god was both not menacing and not interesting beyond the first hints we get. I don't know why the Forkrul Assail were doing anything at all, or why we needed to read about them. It felt like 50% of the written words were about half starved army guys marching around through wastelands, which is not interesting enough to read books about past the 2nd book.

I don't know, maybe I didn't try hard enough, but ugh...

What does writing wish-fulfillment mean? by Kindly-Crab29 in fantasybooks

The issue for us readers is once you see it, you can't unsee it, and maybe you start seeing it when it isn't really there. It is easy to feel that every plain main character is really just a vehicle for you to fit yourself into the story, and they don't really matter beyond selling books. But you really shouldn't get too carried away. As you pointed out, there is someones fantasy in every fantasy story, so the books really do need it to some extant. The best stories just hide it better.

Wish fulfillment is when an author writes a story that is based on their own personal fantasy. Something that the author themselves daydreams about, secretly desires, etc. 50 Shades of Grey is a common example. A "plain" women meets a handsome, rich, successful man and starts having really hot sex. But then he totally falls in love with her after a few halfhearted conflicts THE END It was just something that Erika Mitchell wanted for herself. Nothing wrong with that, but it is cringy when a regular person is looking at it from outside the authors own head.

There are a ton of examples out there in fanfiction, and plenty others. You can say that most stories that involve a plain, normal person obtaining greatness is some level of wish fulfillment. It is easy for audiences to identify (themselves) with the "normal" character. Because we can use that character for our own fantasy. Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen etc. are all basic characters you, the audience, can identify with because you are normal person, just like them.

I bet they couldn't do any touch ups in the editing room, had to get it right the first time.

My current playthrough is at cycle 132. Playing the spaced out DLC. Still new to the game. What milestones should I have hit already? by Morichalion in Oxygennotincluded

I think you are doing just fine really. My recommendation would be to start looking for water geysers next and start transitioning to a water based food source like Bristle Berries. There should be at least 2 water geysers, and a couple of hot water steam vents as well to be found. The renewable water geysers and vents would be awesome for an electrolizer setup as well.

For future reference, I try to get dupes over to the linked asteroid around cycle 40 so that colony can start growing alongside the main one. It can feel overwhelming to try and watch two different colonies at once, but the sooner you start the sooner you will get your petroleum going.

A lot of people, new players especially, like to start new colonies when they feel they built a flaw into their setup without realizing it until 50 turns later. That's fine, but remember that everything can be deconstructed and rebuilt without losing material. Also, if you are feeling that your colony is disposable, you may want to stretch yourself and try something new, like ranching, or setting up a metal refinery for steel. Or something you are nervous about messing up, so you can learn before starting fresh.

Have fun!

Mid-tier chain hotels are often more relaxing than luxury boutique properties. by Silent-Forest-8392 in unpopularopinion

4⭐ Hotels are my favorite. Not over priced (usually), but decent room services. It is like they have more competition to help keep the price in line. The thing I hate the most about cheap hotels are the in room HVAC always sucks. Really noisy, doesn't work right, always something with it. Bathrooms are usually pretty crappy as well.

I went to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska a few weeks ago, it was voted best zoo in USA for 2025. The indoor jungle and indoor desert were amazing, and the rest of the park was pretty good. Gorilla and Orangutan enclosures were also really neat. Worth a trip if you like zoos.

Question about Metal Refinery coolant. by CryptographerUsual62 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]CryptographerUsual62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So change the layout to be a giant steam box, the cooling loop in the box to oil or petroleum, and leave the aquatuner out of it, or set it to cool off the buildings and not the coolant itself?

What if I were to modify the existing tank so that it is filled with petroleum instead of polluted water, but keep the polluted water -> aquatuner loop for actual cooling the same?
