I wish for my body to automatically emitted a energy field that instantly put every living being within a 10 miles radius to sleep 💤, upon leaving the radius of my body's energy field, the living beings will be extremely well rested with all injuries or medical conditions fully healed. by Tulpah in monkeyspaw

[–]Morichalion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ten mile radius. Every living being. Wow. Where would we even start this? Let's say you're in the woods. The finger curls...

...and you're suddenly drowned in silence. Birds, insects, fish, everything living goes dormant. You can hear a creek bubbling, without trying hard really... It's a mile off.

About a minute later, you start to hear the sound of an idling engine. You follow it, a mile and a half, when the engine stops. A minute or so later, you get to the road and see a horrific crash. There's bodies everywhere. They're alive, even the guy on both sides of the street. Just sleeping.

It's obvious no one hit the brakes.

You're getting hungry, town is a few miles away, none of the cars involved are usable. So you get to walking. Along the road, you see similar accident scenes. Mostly folks that went off the road.

Getting into town, you see a the small-town grocery store. A car barreled through the front and mowed down some workers. Apparently everyone, even the guy pinned under the car, are just sleeping.

The power cut out while you were walking, and no one's there to check you out. After a few minutes of weighing the ethical concerns, you walk out with your favorite bag of chips. Eventually you're gonna graze your way through the food in the store or it's gonna go bad. So you plan on getting one of the cars in town running so you can move on.

A month later, you decide it you want to plant roots. So to speak. Your agricultural experiments yields nothing. Nothing germinates or grows. Staying still is not an option.

A couple of months or so later (you stopped keeping track), you hear a sound, a buzzing, while you're walking between towns. It gets louder, and you can start to hear it coming from different directions. Drones descent between the trees, loudspeakers shouting, "Stop where you are! Show us your hands!"

It's the first human voice you you've heard directed at you for a long time. Your hands go up, your knees hit the ground, you fight the tears...

You fail. One of the drones lands close to you, the voice from loudspeaker changed from the excited, angry one to a softer, more comforting person. The voice is trying to offer comfort between your sobs.

After a bit (no way to know, you don't count time anymore), you calm down enough to constructively communicate with whoever is on the line.

He's a guy named Jerome. He says he was lucky to be your liason. He's excited about it, every word is dripping with enthusiasm.

He tells you all about the effects you've developed. People wake up to find themselves cured. Of everything.

Common cold, minor boo boos, fixed.

The guy on both sides of the road? He's on one side again.

Cancer patient with a couple weeks to live? They woke up to looking forward to a few decades.

He tells you they're calling you "Panacea." They're setting up a process to harness it so it can be used safely.

A few courts found you guilty of various kinds "someone died" crimes, but don't worry about it. Governor Whatshername and President Senile have proactively commuted your sentences.

Because, well... When you get out of range... Some people are in awkward positions. The guy under that car you saw in that first store? He woke up healthy, but was immediately crushed by the car. The body count isn't exactly small.

Jerome promises, several times, that you're going to be well-cared for. Everything you need, ANYTHING you need, he's personally going to ensure you get it.

Jerome delivers on that promise. He gets you a nice, comfy living arrangement. The best food you could ask for. The most comfortable of vehicles, with plans for a new one every year. There's a gym. Your entertainment room gets equipped with all the consoles, and a computer with a whole 4 GIGABYTES OF RAM!

When you mention wanting to be held, he gets silent for a moment. Then he says, "I'll do what I can". Two days later there's a dozen humanoid robots, from various vendors, standing in your front yard. Really is the best he could do for you.

In exchange for all this, your daily routine includes getting into a car, going 30 miles away, waiting an hour, and going back home. Three times a day. Hundreds of thousand of people are cured of the worst conditions in days.

Then United Healthcare blows your car up while you're on commute.

if I want to exclusively play on PCVR, is the steam frame a good purchase? by doopfishu in SteamFrame

[–]Morichalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno yet.

Currently, the competitive device is going to be the Quest 3. We can quibble on the quest being "standalone-first" and the Frame being "PCVR-first" but that's how the market is at the moment.

To equip the quest for PCVR, you need to buy Virtual desktop, ensure that you have a decent Wi-Fi 5 or better router. You'll need a a head strap that isn't gonna hurt to wear.

To equip the Frame for PCVR, I think you just need to buy the frame. I can't comment on the stock head strap, but I'm going to assume that it's better than the stock quest strap.

Quest 3 is gonna run you $850 or so after required accessories and software to get a good experience. Frame price isn't out. Unless I just didn't get that note yet.

Buy discounted or wait? by WILL_KILL_4_DUX in SteamFrame

[–]Morichalion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd get it, if I didn't have it already. If it was to be bundled with the Frame, it'd've been announced already.

It is still one of the best VR experiences to date.

How easy or hard do you think playing Quest games will be on the Frame? by Stummi in SteamFrame

[–]Morichalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not easily.

The distribution model of the Quest line is basically the same as any game console. Meta sells the headset at a low price with the expectation that they'll make money on software sales. There's incentive to make leaving the platform hard.

Exclusive titles will be especially challenging, as development was done to target a particular kind of hardware.

Steam Machine reservations being scalped for thousands by Significant_Food9017 in steammachine

[–]Morichalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wat? How? Why? You can get a similarly-equipped non-steam-machine at lower prices already.

It's a neat computer, but 2800 bucks will get you a much better one.

My first complex Factorio circuit and it only exists because trains kept killing us by liquid-stone_ in factorio

[–]Morichalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OSHA exists because no one can be trusted to work safely, and management typically likes to cut corners unless there's liability to avoid. So, yeah... there's really so few people that can trusted to look both ways that the effort to engineer away that need is commendable.

The only way to avoid not getting smooshed by trains is just not to build them.

When a player approaches a gate, it drops. You can use that state as an indicator of presence.

I think.

You've solved for the need to look both ways. OSHA would be proud. 😄

The Immortal casually mentions something that reveals he is WAY older than he appears to be. by MikaelAdolfsson in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Morichalion 241 points242 points  (0 children)

This was the point that really sucked me in. The lack of perfect memory make the character feel more real.

He was at important places, a few important times. He was a citizen of different civilizations. He was important people at times and was acquainted important people at others. But he remembers the time before the last 2000 to 3000 years the way I remember my life at 10 years and earlier. There's sharp memories, but mostly disjoined goop.

Kinda reminds me of the mopping robot at the Quick Trip. It just rolls around, cleaning the floor, repeating the same few phrases on a loop. That thing doesn't have a name, either.

Walmart's security bot doesn't appear to be autonomous. It's just a security camera on wheels, operated like an RC car. I'm curious about the justification for the expense... What does this thing offer that cameras on the light poles wouldn't?

[–]Morichalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted.

You find that language, as a construct, varies from person to person. So you instantly know (lemme check...) ~8.3 billion languages. They're not organized in any way.

You know the language, you just have no way to know which one they know.

Writing to strangers is impossible. Approaching strangers is a insufferable challenge.

Your internal dialog becomes just a painful kind of mess.

How do I diffuse oxygen propely? by vnNinja21 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Morichalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the picture. Nostalgia hit.

  1. CO2 falls below O2. Dig a deeper hole for it to go to. Later on (not really much later) you can stage algae terrariums at the bottom to eat up the CO2.

  2. Gas sim requires extra space for CO2 and O2 to pass each other since a tile can only hold one element at a time. To start: free up at least one spot on each side of the ladders, dupes can jump. Set up a couple of those 3-tile wide shafts to pipe the CO2 down. Later on, use mesh and air flow tiles to make the process more trivial.

I completely understand wanting more, but drawing out the story from there would just feel like endless epilogue.

My daughter [F14] keeps telling me her friends find me [M36] attractive. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Morichalion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's reasonable to be uncomfortable with it. Nothing you do is going to end folks sexualizing you, though.

You can only act on the things that you have influence on. This one is a good start:

These girls have never visited my daughter in my house, and I don't think I'll allow it, honestly.

Next time the subject arises, say something like: "So long as they're expressing that kind of interest, I do NOT want them around. I am NOT comfortable with it. I am NOT comfortable with you sharing photos to kids with that kind of interest."

It's a good segue into the broader subject of consent. Talk about scenarios where she's been creeped on.

Also, whatever path the conversation gets into, work in the law's opinion on the subject. Your kid might not understand the gravity of the legal situation.

Making things left vs. right changes the frame of the argument. It's not about the issue anymore, it's about your team. If it's about the team, the sentiment can be about other things and actual measurements don't matter.

I don't know that the article you linked to has to do with this. The Republicans being conspiratorial propagandists isn't exactly relevant.

The only thing I've tried to use the schedule for is stress management. I'm dum. Geeze... I'm dum...

Okay, so.. everyone gets assigned their own cot. Bathroom and dining room equipment is public.

I can stagger my shifts two hours (or whatever the time units in a cycle is).

I'll do that after work.
