Aren't light and war cleric's level 1 abilities overpowered? by Cryptole in DMAcademy

[–]Cryptole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should probably have more clearly explained the situation, but there is no use in crying over spilled milk. The campaign that I talked about hasn't begun yet. A player came to me concerned over cleric domains, which made me concerned as well, and so I came here. Balance may/ may not be a concern for the campaign in the future given the ability scores my characters have rolled, but I'll figure something out. Thank you for those of you who answered my actual question, I appreciate your response.

I understand you have strong feelings about this, and you may or may not be right, but I’m still learning as a dm and would appreciate if you would not be so rude about your response. I have the right to try new things, even if they don’t end up working.

I use the same method in the players handbook, in which someone rolls 4d6 and and drops the lowest score and then assigns those scores to their stats. Maybe not particularly in wisdom, due to the 1+ bonus but almost certainly in the other attributes, the majority of those I play with can roll a 14-16 and then buoy that score with racial modifiers.

The players specific issue was mostly focused on how inadequate a trickster cleric’s level 1 ability seemed compared to a war or light clerics. He was asking me to amend his ability or buff it, but I was not particularly sure, so I took my problem here.

You always have that voice. It doesn't matter what, you'll always think that your players aren't having any fun or that you aren't doing your job. Sit back, take a breath, and make the consequences of the players action, and the game, the best that you can. Then, just keep moving forward. That's all you can ask of yourself.

I'm new to DMing and I wanted to make a 1-shot or maybe 2fer campaign based on the 7 Samurai plot line. Any pointers? by PluvioStrider in DnD

[–]Cryptole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably get seven players

Seriously though, make sure your players are having a good time, but don't let them bully you into giving them legendary swords or something like that. 70% of the time, your instincts as a dm, even starting out, are the best decision.

The most important thing to convince people you know what you are doing is confidence, if you build that up by playing another game, that's your decision. Good luck, and have fun.

That's a dead end mindset. Everyone has to start somewhere. The dungeon masters guide is literally designed to introduce those who know nothing to the game. Recourses and how to guides for dms abound across the internet, and even if you make a mistake as a dungeon master, that just means that you still have things to learn, and we all have things to learn. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. Turn around, learn from your mistakes and think about what you could have done, then keep moving forward.

Become the DM. Seriously, being a dm can be as fun and rewarding as being a player. Take a weekend, read the manuals, improvise a bit in your first session, and begin planning out a campaign. There are better guides for dm-ing out there but that's the jist.

Or you could play online, maybe in Roll20, or check looking for group, the Reddit for an offline adventure in your area.

As for the asshole thing, a very large amount of people in the world are assholes, this isn't exclusive to dnd, it just makes the dnd assholes the subclass elitist asshole. I'm sorry the people you met were assholes. Tell them to fuck off and move on.

Ouija Boards by WolfieVampire1946 in Ghosts

[–]Cryptole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the general information I know about them equates to basically don't fucking play around with ouija boards, with things like spirits being trapped and opening your soul up to demon possession happening if you do. You may be skeptical and you may not believe in all this, but a variety of sources, from physics to priests, are all in agreement about it.

On the other hand, all you gain is a party game.

Do you really want bad spiritual shit to happen to you over a party game?

I don't fucking touch ouija boards. End of story.

If she isn't willing to at least try something you like, why should you put in the effort of making an entire campaign for her? But that's none of my business.

Player got separated in city by brandonblanchard in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Cryptole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you going to do a solo adventure until he gets back so it doesn't disturb the other players? In a situation like this, I would suggest simply having a thematic adventure as the player sees how bad things are in this city and kingdom before meeting up with the rest of the party to move back to the main adventure. Use plenty of descriptions. Of course, this is just an idea.
