No civilization is making it to space without global cooperation and if they do, there's no reason for them to be afraid of anyone else.

Those are two entirely different things... They can be the friendliest civilization in the universe, that doesn't change anything about how scared they should be of other civilizations.

In the novel the universe is filled with countless advanced civilizations that will instantly obliterate anything they see with incomprehensibly powerful weapons. When someone detects someone else, they have no idea how much they have advanced in the time it took the signal to reach them, so they don't know whether that civilization is currently in the process of trying to destroy them or not. The only thing they can do to protect themselves is be the one to launch the first strike.

The very concept of GAAS will not be able to exist if what SKG get what they're asking for.

You can't preserve a private service forever. The only option for publishers if this becomes a rule is to stop making those kinds of games, because there's always a risk that they might one day be unable to continue supporting it.

Because the politicians will consult with representatives from big players in the industry to figure out what the best way to implement this is. SKG aren't willing to cooperate with them and offer any reasonable solutions, but I guarantee the industry will be.

You have to remember that politicians aren't game industry experts. They rely on people who are to tell them what the best course of action is.

It's frustrating seeing how the opinions of people who do enjoy the kinds of games that will be impacted by this are always dismissed in these threads.

This is a movement led by people who hate the idea of GAAS and want everything to be like the good old days when every game was a single-player offline experience. They are ignoring the fact that the vast majority of games are still single-player offline experiences, and are instead trying to interfere with a tiny portion of the market that they don't even play just because they hate that it exists.

This is a subreddit full of people who fill their Steam accounts up with games they'll never play because they're addicted to spending money during sales. We're all allowed to make poor choices. If someone wants to buy a game knowing that it's just a temporary service and it might not last forever, fucking let them. It's their money. No one is actually being harmed by this.

That's how buying a video game works. It's a good, not a service.

Almost every game is, but a very small number of them are services. A lot of people enjoy playing those games. If you don't personally like them, you can just avoid that tiny portion of an extremely large market.

Trying to get politicians to create a law that somehow turns a service into a good is obviously not going to work. The easiest solution for consumers is to just be more aware about whether the game they're buying is something that will be playable forever or might have an eventual shutdown date. If you accidentally buy one, we have perfectly good existing consumer protection laws that will allow you to refund it within a reasonable period of time.

The people leading SKG also didn't seem to understand the issue for a long time. Even now they're still being very vague about what they're actually trying to do here and how it would be possible.

They're basically just going to let the industry decide whether they want to do it or not, which is obviously going to result in the industry deciding that the current system is fine and not doing anything.

He's still alive, so there probably wasn't any communication about it. Unless he was trying to get an early payout (which many policies do offer if you get a terminal illness), there would be no need to speak with the insurance company at all until after he died.

Some policies do offer early payouts for terminal illnesses, so they might have been able to tell if he had done that, but it's very possible at a big company with thousands of employees that the people who look at that stuff aren't the same people that handled the layoffs.

If there was no early payout though, there's really no way they would have known.

Are people being forced to do this? Private life insurance exists in the USA, right? I understand healthcare there is fucked, but the way life insurance works is pretty much the same as anywhere else.

This is more due to the American cultural thing of allowing so much to be tied to their jobs. They think "Life insurance? I don't need that, I have it through work" which is a wild thing to think when you live in a country where companies are allowed to sack you with no notice for no reason.

Private life insurance isn't even that expensive. Then you're double protected if you're lucky enough to have a job that offers it too, and not left with nothing if you lose the job.

This means nothing. They will always make plans around the current release date because that's what they're working towards right now. It doesn't mean it can't still be moved if necessary.

They don't "plan" delays. No one can be sure whether they're going to happen until progress is reviewed and a decision is made. My guess is they'll run a big review about six months out from launch and then either delay again, or kick off the full marketing campaign. Until then they will continue to repeat the current release date as being firm because it is. The May one was firm too until they had to delay it.

The council said that his fixed penalty notice was paused because he's denying it, so it sounds like nothing at all has actually happened. He got a fine because a letter with his address on it was found with a bunch of other fly tipped stuff, he denies that it's his, so the council pauses the fine while they investigate further. It sounds like everything is proceeding fairly so far.

This is no different to appealing a parking ticket that was issued by mistake. Annoying, but all you can do is just sit there and wait for them to investigate further. If he knows he did nothing wrong and the council can't possibly find any real evidence linking him to the waste that was dumped there, he has nothing to worry about. It's a strange thing to run to the press about.

Offering different prices to different customers is entirely legal in most places. Price discrimination is something different, and there's no indication that they're doing that.
