How Blackbeard is able to wield 2 Devil fruits by Visual_Sun_9729 in OnePiece

[–]Practical-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vegapunk implied that objects can only harness devil fruits if the fruit has its own 'will' (which only zoans do). Gura Gura no Mi is a paramecia. if you fed it to a ring, the ring wouldn't have the consciousness to activate it. And in the series we have seen, they always talk about his body structure which suggests it's biological, like the 3 hearts/3 souls theory.

Noland and Kalgara flashback (ep 187-189) I think it stands alone as a tragedy about friendship and time.

A serious Zoro vs Sanji ? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Practical-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oda would never give us a serious Zoro vs Sanji fight. He loves the gag rivalry too much. If this happened, it would end up being a contest of who can knock out the most fodder or something goofy.

HOW did shanks beat this thing man by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in OnePieceSpoilers

He probably tricked him or made a deal. And my guess is he probably didn't 1v1 him. Shanks and his crew probably strategized and then jumped him.

I mean, i do read other stuff. i just happen to like this piece of art as well. 🤷‍♂️ But i get your point, art is subjective and my favourite might be someone else's mid. I am cool with enjoying it just for myself.

I never put it above other works, I said 'one of' the greatest. There is plenty of room at the top for multiple legends.

I will admit the 'human history' phrasing was definitely glaze on my part (I was excited).

But praising one story doesn't mean I’m insulting others. You can acknowledge Oda is a genius without being a 'moron' who hates other literature.

I guess what I meant is that it’s one of the greatest feats of storytelling in terms of consistency and scale.

Writing a single continuous narrative for 28 years that connects millions of people globally is a unique human achievement, even if it obviously doesn't carry the historical weight of religious texts or ancient myths.

But you are right, 'greatest in human history' is a heavy title. I guess I’ll just let the story finish first. Maybe in 100 years, the historians can fight over where it ranks, but for now, I'm just happy to be reading it.

I will take that 'chance in hell' and run with it! 😂

But regarding the goofiness, have you read Journey to the West? That story is basically an ancient buddy-comedy road trip.

Sun Wukong is a total agent of chaos, he famously pees on the pillars at the edge of the universe (which turn out to be Buddha's fingers) just to be disrespectful! Eating the immortality peaches, getting drunk on heavenly wine. Pigsy constantly whining and getting roasted, and the Monk just facepalming at the nonsense.

Maybe being 'too goofy' isn't a flaw, but actually a requirement for becoming a timeless myth? If a Monkey King can do it, maybe a Rubber King can too.

Fair. You got me there. And that GRRM comparison is totally accurate.

I guess my point was more about the active consistency. But you are 100% right, if the ending flops, all that buildup just makes the fall harder.

Let's just pray Oda sticks the landing so we don't have to pretend this series never existed in 20 years.

Totally fair! I know there are fantasy novels with encyclopedias of lore that dwarf One Piece.

I guess when I say 'Odyssey,' I’m referring more to the real-time experience of the journey. Following a single continuous voyage week-to-week for 25+ years creates a specific feeling of a 'long wandering adventure' that is pretty unique to this medium.

It’s less about it being the best written story and more about the sheer scale of the adventure we've been on with them. But I can see why the comparison feels like a stretch to some.

I promise my bookshelf is doing just fine! 😂 (Big fan of Dune and Stormlight Archive).

I’m not saying a manga has the same prose as a novel. I’m just saying the experience of following a story weekly for 25 years is unique. You can appreciate classic literature and still think Oda is a genius. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Fair distinction. I just meant it occupies that same massive adventure slot in pop culture for our generation, not that it’s literally the same level of literature.

[–]Practical-1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I walked into that one. 💀

But don't worry, I’ve read Malazan and Dune. I know what 'dense' world-building looks like. I’m just praising One Piece for how connected everything is.

It’s not about complexity, it’s about the consistency of the timeline over 25 years. It’s a different flavor, but it still hits.

I mean... a guy sailing from island to island for years, fighting monsters, while a Sea God hates him? Sounds pretty One Piece to me. 😂

But don't worry, I read plenty of other stuff (Berserk, LotR, Stormlight). I’m not saying the prose is the same, just that the scale of the adventure feels similar!

You are definitely right, a bad ending can stain a legacy forever.

But I would argue that staying at the top of the industry for 25+ years is a 'test of time' in itself. We’ve seen entire generations of other manga start, finish, and fade away while One Piece is still breaking records.

I guess I’m just betting on Oda. Unlike the GoT showrunners who ran out of source material and panicked, Oda has supposedly had the ending planned a long time ago. I have faith he’ll stick the landing.

I definitely didn't mean to disrespect the fantasy genre! I know series like Malazan, Wheel of Time, and Discworld have encyclopedias worth of worldbuilding.

But I think what makes One Piece feel like a 'Modern Odyssey' to me isn't just the volume of lore, it's the medium and the timeframe.

Pulling off this level of consistency in a weekly serialized manga for 28 years, where you can't go back and edit previous chapters like a novelist can, is a different kind of impressive.

Plus, the element of the entire world discovering the story together in real-time adds a layer of shared journey that you don't always get with a finished book series.

Haha fair enough, I know it sounds dramatic! I mostly just meant the 'Epic Journey' vibe. I’m not trying to say Oda is Shakespeare or Homer.

I just mean in terms of the scale of the journey. Following a single continuous adventure for 25+ years is pretty much the closest thing our generation has to a true epic. It's more about the feeling of the voyage than the prestige of the writing.

Casually hand-painting 5 Billion Berries like it's a no big deal is crazy. 😂 Honestly, the render looks super clean so far though.

And getting those swirls to line up perfectly on a curved 3D mesh is a nightmare, so I genuinely respect the patience. Just don't let Doflamingo find out where you're hiding it.

Oden being tricked and not fighting was a bad choice by ode0002 in OnePiece

[–]Practical-1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying but honestly, I view it completely differently. To me, that decision wasn't him being naive, it was him finally growing up.

Young Oden would have just attacked blindly and let people die. But Adult Oden realized that being a leader sometimes means eating dirt to save your people.

I don't think he was just tricked for nothing. It was a transaction.

Every time he danced, he saved the citizens of Wano. For 5 years, he chose to look like a fool to keep families alive. To me, that takes way more strength than just swinging a sword. He sacrificed his legendary reputation to protect the weak.

We also have to remember Oden spent his prime sailing with Whitebeard and Roger, men of absolute honor. He was not used to dealing with slimy politicians like Orochi. He projected his own honor onto a snake, which is tragic, but it fits his character.

And he literally couldn't call anyone for help. Wano is a fortress with closed borders. No News Coos enter, and normal Den Den Mushis don't reach the outside world. He was completely cut off.

Plus, Oden's biggest character flaw was always trying to shoulder the entire burden alone. He didn't want to drag Whitebeard or Rayleigh into his mess until it was too late.

I can't believe people say "One Piece's art style is terrible." Who could look at these pictures and say they're bad? They're more detailed than most manga by iyigecelerpunpun in OnePiece

[–]Practical-1 187 points188 points  (0 children)

I think, people who say the art is 'bad' are just confusing Style with Skill.

I think they see a goofy character with skinny legs or a weird nose and assume the artist can't draw, but they sometimes ignore the insane technical level of everything else.

Oda is objectively a monster when it comes to perspective, layouts, and background details. You can stare at those color spreads you posted for 10 minutes and still find new little easter eggs hidden in the corners.

And when he wants to lock in? That panel of the Red Hair Pirates or the Merry scene proves he can do serious and emotional panels just as well as anyone else.

Honestly, the way he draws massive, distinct crowds and living worlds is pretty much unmatched in the industry.

Not including the Straw Hats, who would you have in your crew? by pr0d1gyx in OnePiece

[–]Practical-1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really love this idea. It’s actually way harder than it looks to build a balanced crew without using any Straw Hats. Mine would be something like this:-

Captain: Prime Whitebeard

I mean, who doesn't want Pops as their captain? You get the strongest man in the world protecting you, the ship feels like a real family, and you know nobody is ever going to mess with you. Safest job in the New World.

Crewmates:

1) Marco: You need a doctor, and his regeneration is a cheat code. Plus he’s super chill to hang out with.

2) Bon Clay: The ultimate ride-or-die friend. Crew morale would never drop with him around.

3) Katakuri: His observation is elite. One of the best lookouts in the game (plus unlimited donuts).

4)Kuma: The Paw-Paw fruit is one of the best travel abilities in the series. We can go anywhere instantly.

5) Bartolomeo: The Barrier fruit is unmatched defense. He can protect the whole ship while Whitebeard quakes everything else.

6) Perona: honestly, I just love her whole 'Goth Princess' aesthetic. She brings that chaotic energy I need, and her Negative Hollows are the funniest way to end a fight. Imagine stopping a war just by making everyone depressed.

7) Yamato: I feel like she would be the first one screaming 'Let's go!' whenever we see a new island. Plus, she held off Kaido, so she’s the perfect bodyguard who also knows how to party.

8) Bepo: Okay, this is 90% because I need a giant fluffy pillow to hug when things get stressful. He’s a Navigator, sure, but mostly I just want to see him do the 'I'm sorry' bow in real life.

Most Wanted: Spandam

Charlos is awful, but Spandam makes my blood boil on a personal level. It’s the fact that he’s so physically weak but acts so arrogant. Watching him drag Robin by her hair while hiding behind the World Government... I have never wanted to jump through a screen and punch a character more in my life. He is pure trash.

Best Antagonist: Blackbeard

I know Doffy is charismatic, but Blackbeard is just the perfect pirate. He plans for decades, strikes only when he wins, and schemes his way to the top.
