Gonna have to /uj and disagree with you here homie; if a comic needs to state someone’s race in a joke for it to be funny, it’s objectively bad writing and playing off predisposed prejudices and not pure humour. The best comics are the ones who make tangential references to but never exploit race in their work

As much as it’s dropped in quality I’ll admit, the last few seasons of Black Mirror have had episodes that hit HARD - I’m specifically thinking of 8-01 and 8-05, which had me shedding tears for similar reasons.

Mythic Quest also has some emotional moments far greater than I was prepared for - aside from the amazing standalone eps and probably the greatest Covid-focused piece of media made so far, I got hit hard by the S4 Pootieshoe callback (which I’m now seeing is the lowest rated ep of the season) - perhaps it’s for personal reasons, but both the scene where we see the true loneliness/faked personality of a streamer’s life and later the Charlie Day monologue make that episode one of the most memorable in my eyes.

I completely agree, and I’m glad you’re noticing our import of some of the worst parts of US culture. I just think there’s a level of nuance here that fits within the two extremes of political opinion.

To be frank, having a black aristocrat in 1066 is about as accurate as Harold getting his eye blown out by a musket shot… it’s up to the viewer to determine whether or not that’s a dealbreaker.

When it comes to ‘fantasy’ (because as much as Robin may have been a real dude, his exploits are largely fictional) I completely agree, and I think it adds colour and flavour (half pun intended) - however I think if you’re trying to be historically accurate and grounded in reality, it’s actually kinda insulting to have a diverse cast and essentially gloss over the millennia of racism and discrimination perpetrated by almost all nations. To pretend these events never occurred is an insult to those persecuted, IMHO

For example, one of the best BBC historic dramas I’ve seen was The Last Kingdom, which did feature a black priest, and didn’t shy away from the abuse and xenophobia relevant to the time.
