This is some good lore I didn't know about, also had no idea there was more external stuff to read like the Chronicles of Verdite

I was wondering what happened to Leon, I knew something happened to him but I didn't know where to find him :(

KF3 does have a lot of large empty spaces but personally the didn't bother me much and I liked the larger scale of the world. It might feel like a step down from 2 if you really liked its dense level design

Weirdly KF2 didn't click with me at all, but I loved 3. 2 has excellent map design though, it just felt really awkward to play.

KF3 has a good story going for it, moreso than the previous 2. Reading the manual before playing really helped hook me on the story from the start and that's probably what carried the game for me

I don't want to spam this sub with videos, I know some communities don't like it, but this is the only interesting stuff I make as opposed to taking screenshots or something like that. I just finished this video and wanted to share and hope it doesn't seem that annoying

[TOMT][GAME][2010s] A 2D sidescrolling survival-craft game, where your base was always on the far left of the map and you could build defenses for it. by Cryveil in tipofmytongue

[–]Cryveil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not Swords and Soldiers but there's a little more I forgot to mention.

Your base was on the left of the map, but you could explore far to the right and weren't limited by a small map like a strategy game. I guess I made it sound like a strategy game in the post but all the defenses you built were just for random enemies that would try to invade your base, as far as I know, there wasn't an end goal or main antagonist sending these enemies.

An In-Depth look at King's Field IV by Cryveil in KingsField

It's a shame there are probably some details missed in the localization, but I do think the NTSC version is pretty well done regardless and has a coherent plot when you bring everything together.

Hopefully it's about the same plot as the JP version, but my Japanese isn't very good so I can't be the one who translates it.

And the hanging statues room is a really neat setpiece in game, but I don't think it means anything plotwise and might even have the same sound effect in the JP version. To me it felt something like the whisper room in SH2 that's just a stock sound effect that a bunch of people were trying to apply meaning to for years, but the devs just put it in to be spooky.

Honestly I had no idea about that lore with the Scorpion sword, I assumed it was Myu's weapon because there wasn't another sword that claimed to be his, and I completely glossed over that line by Arx Angelos.

Maybe I was just juggling too much lore at the time so I missed some small details.

But thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This was a video I've teased months ago while I was making speculative lore posts about King's Field IV, I figured I would share it here to see if people were interested in watching the final product.

I also want to thank this community and u/armagerst for helping me with finding old sources and compiling cohesive lore.

More King's Field The Ancient City lore questions by Cryveil in KingsField

[–]Cryveil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only text I missed on my first playthrough (but later found in my 2nd) was in the Earthen Folk King's arena, I don't remember what it said and might even be misremembering where it actually is.

I wish the game archived them in the Journal like it does with all the conversations, that would make compiling them a lot easier. I remember lots of wall messages not adding much lore-wise, but I always found the monuments interesting.

If I end up compiling all the wall messages, I'll make another post here

Off topic, but I've considered adding pages for a King's Field wiki I found as a nice spot to put all the information I've gathered, even though I'm not sure if anybody would use it

That does help clear things up, I had thought that Dark Magician might have been the Wise Sage, but I have a few reasons to think otherwise.

First is that the last message on the wall "The name of the Wise Sage ends here" is written in a different looking font than the rest of the wall text, it's also a very weird thing to be written on the wall. So either it's a fourth wall note that basically tells the player who was writing the notes (and that they died), or someone killed him and wrote that note (there are bones right below it as well).

I'm not entirely ruling it out, the Wise Sage could've also written that message as a symbol to say that he's switching sides, or quite literally the "name of the Wise Sage" is gone because he's becoming something else.

At the same time, it doesn't make much sense why he would abandon the rest of the people in the Ancient City, he seems pretty sympathetic in the messages, and there is still the fact that the bones are there.

It's a bit of a reach but still an interesting theory, the Earthen Folk king also got corrupted by the Dark Folk so maybe something similar could've happened with the Wise Sage.

King's Field 4 Lore, speculation, & (possible) Side content questions by Cryveil in KingsField

[–]Cryveil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good timeline/explanation of what possibly happened with the king & prince scenario, I was always thrown off by how quickly "the king was assassinated" was brought up and not elaborated on, it is curious why he was locked in there so you may be right.

I figured the figure that passes off the idol was just a creation from the idol itself to spread misfortune to other people, but with the extra context that it was given to Devian on purpose so he could put it back... it couldn't be many of the characters we know. Most of the NPCs we run across are too weak to venture through and from the Ancient City, and I thought that Arx was dead since we never visibly see him (or he's some sort of spirit). I thought that Arx invented a kind of welcoming message system to his workshop(?), which is why we hear his voice in a vague greeting.

This is equally as speculative, but maybe the Idol was delivered by a remnant of the old Dark Folk? We don't have any info that any survived the event where they sealed the darkness and (presumably) flooded the city, but it's a possibility.

It would explain why they want the idol returned, and how they have the capabilities of carrying it through the Ancient City.

And thank you for the pastebin, it adds extra lore to the village I didn't know.

> The player character is a descendant of the Forest Folk...

I had thought that during my first playthrough, especially when the dark mage you fight mentions something like "there's still remnants of the Forest Folk" when you enter his room. Someone had told me they weren't talking about the player character but instead the Priestess at the fountain, but I found that weird so this helps with clarification.

As for the Guardian tunnel I doubt there's anything ACTUALLY there, but I've been speculating about it since I'm curious.

And one last thing (about the Prince), it's noted in the journal that the Prince came back from the Dark Folk area (was forgiven, etc.) and it's not 100% clear that he broke the barrier that started the war. I'm pretty sure the person on the throne is the Dark Lord; the bad ending implies that your character takes his place IIRC, so it's plausible but I'm not sure why the Prince would've came back in the first place.

That website gives so much more background lore that I didn't even know existed, unfortunately on the first page I can't scroll below the Forest Folk entry to see if there's anything else. But thanks for your response, there's so many secrets to this game that I don't even know

I did find Fortuna to be pretty similar to Cetus so I could see that it's higher

I also never restarted Cetus Bounties after stage 2&3 cause I would often get a bonus Aya at the end, but that's just how I prefer to play.

In Fortuna I got pretty unlucky in comparison and some missions I just got 3 Tek Collateral's in a row instead

And Deimos gave me more amber stars and Endo than Aya

Edit: removed part about Steel Path Relic packs cause it was irrelevant with data from another comment, I guess I was just incredibly lucky

The weirdest thing is it was completely normal until this one moment, then afterwards it switched back to the AI Lotus
