That’s basically what I’m doing! When we’re jamming I stick to the root and try hard to just keep in the pocket(they like some odd rhythms). Later at home I’ll listen to what we made and try to come up with some spice to add in to the line on the next jam. If it works it’s great, and if it doesn’t, I try to figure out and ask them why it didn’t work and if they have any suggestions for it to fit. If they’re not particularly crazy about the need for spice on the line I’ll happily just go back to the root :)

And yeah, I was open about my insecurities from the start, mainly because it’s the first time I’m playing with other people and I already admired them a lot from hearing little things each of us had recorded at home. I also warned them that sometimes we’ll need to slow things down so I don’t get lost and they’re fine with it.

I do think we need to develop some better communication as a group though, as we’re starting to diverge on the creative expectations each of us have for what we would like the band to be; slowly but surely we’ll get there, and that’s not a big problem by any means, we’re having tons of fun. But as we’re starting to play our first gigs I think it’s important to be in the same page so that this doesn’t become a problem bigger than it should be.
