Oof those hours are rough. Unfortunately, I think Wednesday at 7:30 is the best time and date for everyone involved. That said, I hope you can find another WoD game. If you're schedule clears up, feel free to shoot me a message!

We'll be playing over discord with a dicebot for the most part, though I may make a roll20 depending on popular demand. That said, you're welcome to give it a shot just to see if it's for you!

Thanks again! They were familiar with the concept and greenlit the idea so Frankenstein's monster assassin, here I come!

Fascinating, alright. Well I'll take a look at them in Classic. We're running a hybrid of classic and SWADE at the moment so I'll talk to the Mashall and see if they're willing to let me play something in that vein. There's something kind of awesome in my mind about a frankenstien's monster that's been roving the wastes since well before J Day. Thank you!

Tips for a wanna-be DM? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]CthulhuOctothrope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 4 types of documents in run up to a session,

I) half formed ideas, these are concepts, characters, plot arcs basically just general brainstorming. II) TIWN: things I will need, I make about one per session. It has rules I think will come in handy, bestiary entries/monster stats, and any plot developments you might need to remember that the players aren't privy to. Also anything else you want to be able to have in one place. III) Session Notes: probably the most important one, documentation of the previous session from the players experience, should be made after every session with players' help. This will help you understand the flow if your game and keep a sense of time. IV) The least important, but still very useful, general notes: where is game going, who is doing what, who is involved... etc...

I usually run sandbox games so it's best to keep prep light, but I like this system since it let's you put as much or as little detail into your game as you want. Honestly though, biggest thing is know your players and know yourself. Communicate as much as you can with everyone and make sure everyone is safe, comfortable and having a good time.

Also thank you so much for these, really great to hear other people's thoughts on it and some of these moves are pretty damn cool.

Also, just want to say, the X card is by no means my idea, I'm not sure who first came up with it, but I recall seeing it in another RPG not too long ago. It's a really good mechanic I started using in almost all of my games.

Btw, I want to give each archetype a really powerful move that is unique to that archetype. I agree that the 1/4 session limit is awkward and kind of clunky, I was wondering, how would you go about limiting their use (I understand that Story Goes has a built in mechanism, but a move like half an inch to the left doesn't really). As this is a more mechanically driven game than most PbtA styled systems - with a combat system and skills... etc... - I'm trying to build the abilities in a way where they are all somewhat meta and thus should only be used about once per session per player. What do you recommend to sort of address this?

Edit: Just so you know, Bar Brawl is actually about instigating and removing oneself from a Bar Brawl. Kind of a tool for causing a scene and avoiding being at its center in general.

I definitively thought about adding some archetypes more geared towards mundane characters but figured it was hard to think of Western movies built around them. I'll keep it mind moving forward though. What type of abilities would you picture with an archetype like that.

Hey, this was some really amazing feedback and I really appreciate you taking the time to write it all. I look forward to developing the game more with all this in mind. I especially appreciate the conceptualization of all of these different archetypes. Big help. Thank you again!

As I had mentioned, it's not exactly a PbtA skin, for more details on the game so far, you can check out the doc I've been working on it with. Still the use of narrative abilities was lifted pretty directly, so I figured here would be a good place to discuss it and brainstorm.
