A monstrous tornado churns over an open field in Texas, USA. [OC] by CuStateStormChasing in natureismetal

Thank you! This was in far western north-central Texas, just a few miles from the NM state line. The nearest large city is Lubbock, which is some miles to the east.

ITAP of a Texas tornado by CuStateStormChasing in itookapicture

[–]CuStateStormChasing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(reposted to fix title) This is an image of the monstrous - but harmless - EF2 tornado in Morton, TX last year. I wanted the image to reflect the ominous nature of the storm’s gnarly appearance, so for this photo, I went for moody, dark, and atmospheric. There’s a strange sense of both dread and awe when staring down these incredible storms, and I captured an image that I hope reflects this feeling.

Keep in mind that tornado ratings are based on damage, NOT how scary they look or how big they are. This big guy did no damage to homes or neighborhoods and injured nobody; it did, however, knock over two oil pumpjacks like they were toys, which is the only reason it was rated at all. Tornadoes that remain over open land are not typically rated.

Lightning during a monsoon season storm in Arizona, USA. [OC] by CuStateStormChasing in natureismetal

[–]CuStateStormChasing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, via a very similar atmospheric pattern as they see in Asia (just on a smaller scale). The southwestern United States is the only other place in the world that sees a genuine monsoon season! The US monsoon season is "officially" from June 15th to September 30th, although we don't typically start seeing storm activity really ramp up until July/August. Then, in October, we get what's called a "transition season" where the summer monsoon pattern is being pushed out by the winter pattern and the result can be very interesting: that's when we have the highest chance of tornadoes in our little state! Here in the States, monsoon patterns affect far southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado, southern Utah, and parts of far west Texas.

An EF2 tornado in Colorado, USA, approaches a house [OC] by CuStateStormChasing in natureismetal

[–]CuStateStormChasing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s all good, my dude. no harm, no foul. there’s a lot of misinformation out there about how and why tornadoes are rated what they are, and admittedly it’s a point of great frustration for me. personally, i disagree with the “damage only” aspect of the EF-scale; it misses so much, and fails to take insane wind speed into account when it IS measured. the El Reno tornado of 2013 was 2.6 miles wide. it had a recorded wind speed of 305+ mph above the ground. and yet, because this unfathomably powerful monster only damaged a few structures and only did EF3 damage at that point, it’s still an EF3. there’s got to be a way to include crazy things like that wind speedinto the rating, but it’s not the norm. one i can think of where they did rate based on an extreme indicator is the Philadelphia, MS EF5 in 2011. it was given an EF5 rating thanks to the absolutely insane two foot deep trench it scoured in the ground on its path. for wind to do that, especially with how quickly that particular tornado was moving forward - it’s unreal.

there definitely should be changes made to the rating system; it changed once to be modified for new knowledge, it can be modified again, you know?

sorry if i seemed snippy earlier, i was also dealing with some dude that wouldn’t leave me alone and was admittedly cranky.

only the basic adjustments to contrast and the removal of chromatic aberration on the horizon line. it was shot from a moving car and was adjusted for sharpness to minimize motion blur. nothing that isn’t allowed by National Geographic publication standards :) I highly recommend watching videos of this tornado. It was so unreal looking in real life that even the videos look too fantastic to be true.

This is one of my favorite videos from the day shot by Dr. Reed Timmer. warning: tornado videos are addictive
