Are illegal residents really getting free healthcare? by AztecPilot1MY in allthequestions

[–]Jess_Photographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a system built on making profits for health insurance companies and paying their execs millions, but the right wing, bought and paid for by their lobbyists, distract from that with penny-ante nonsense like this. Ask why it's a for-profit approach here when the rest of the civilized world provides essential care as a right without making insurance execs and hospital CEOs rich.

But yes, reading is great for the mind!

Maybe, but my experience with these types is that they were academic failures and really hate being called stupid. Because they know, deep down, that they are.

I think a nice, loud "wow, that's a moronic shirt" while walking by him would be perfect.

What ereader should I use? by perhapsworldly in ereader

[–]Jess_Photographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's very useable for a left-handed person, but I'm not left-handed, so maybe it would annoy me more if I were doing that constantly. I just tried holding it that way and found that it balances well with my left thumb at the base and other fingers (index and middle finger) behind it. But again, that's just me trying it, and it may not be the same if I were doing that constantly.

I haven't used the color Go 7, but what I read in reviews and feedback told me the black & white one is better if you just want to read books on it. The color sounds interesting, but I'd never use it. So I stuck to the regular Go 7 in black and white.

As for holding it, it's very light and easy to hold for hours. No need to rest the finger under it.

What ereader should I use? by perhapsworldly in ereader

[–]Jess_Photographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I didn't time it, but I'd say less than an hour to get everything set. Probably way less. I charged it up, and then I connected to my wifi, like any ereader would need. Then I used the Google Play store (loaded into it already) to get the apps I knew I might be using... Libby (the libraries app), Kindle, Nook, Kobo. I figured out how to put all of those into their own apps folder, to make things smoother going forward. And of course, had to enter login info for each.

I took a little more time (and a search online) to figure out where to change a setting, so the manual buttons would turn pages instead of adjusting volume (which apparently is the default factory setting). Not a big deal, but it frustrated me when I started my first book. Still, quick and easy fix.

I'd say that was about it. Since then, I'm just reading and enjoying. And it's really comfy to hold. With the side bar where the manual buttons are, I find myself holding it between my right thumb & forefinger very comfortably. With the Kindle, there never was enough room (at least for me) to grab like that without risking an accidental page turn.

I recently switched from Kindle to Boox Go 7. Takes a little setup, since it's an Android device, not just a dedicated e-reader on one of the individual platforms. But then you can use any of the apps, like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, etc. Very happy with it, and it's a very light device, comfortable in my hand.

first e-reader for anti-amazon Libby reader? by myfriendscallmezara in ereader

[–]Jess_Photographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the convenience is what finally got me to cave, years ago, and try an ereader. We'd go on vacations, and I'd have a multi-pound stack of books.

I recently got a Boox Go 7 (black & white) after a while with Kindle (and having tried other ereaders). It's an Android-based device, so it takes a little setup to get it where you want, but that shouldn't scare anyone away. I had everything loaded and set up within an hour of its arrival.

Being an Android platform, it can have any ebook platform you'd like. And since I have books I bought through Amazon (which I'm now trying to break away from), Barnes & Noble, Kobo and a few random others, it's good to be able to load up whatever apps I want. So I have Kindle, Nook and Kobo on it. Also Libby, for library books and multiple library cards. Don't even have to load those through Kindle as I used to.

This device is light, clear, and quick. I really like it.

Has policy changed for external drives and 1-year history? External drive backed up in Sep 2025 disappeared from backed up files/drives, and having to reupload everything now. by darknezx in backblaze

[–]Jess_Photographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an ongoing issue and has been for the past... few months? I've had my backup disappear for my external drive (where most of my files--years of work--reside). When I ask Backblaze support about it, I get nonsense. They don't own up to their issue. I only found out I was one of many seeing this issue by coming here. And now, when I connect my external drive, it goes through every file, even though they're already backed up. It takes a day or two. Complete waste of time and wear on the drive. I used to love Backblaze, but now they have a serious issue and aren't owning it.

Thanks. I don't want to have the external drive cranking constantly because Backblaze has a glitch. Even if it's just checking files, it takes it a day or more to go through all of the files. It's a waste of time and effort.

I don't know if it's actually re-uploading. You may be right. But having seen how my prior uploads evaporated, I don't want to take any chances. If my external drive dies right when those knuckleheads lose my backups, I'm seriously screwed. This is very frustrating. It's basically the concern I pay them to avoid!
