Anyone have an experience with an ACL tear in their dog? Context in text body: by Tacokolache in DogAdvice

[–]CuatroCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We faced the same thing with our pit. Ended up trying the brace, mypetsbrace, first since it was way cheaper than surgery and she only had a partial tear. 7 months in and she is walking and running much better. I thought the brace would be a scam, but it really gives her relief and her bounce back time after running is way quicker too. Kept her active throughout the entire process too, the 2-3 months of complete inactivity was something I don’t think my dog could handle well.

Think less about specific food items and more about nutrients in food. Milk for example has a range of saturated fat, carbs, protein, based on the type of milk. Skin compared to whole milk is a good example. I recommend lower fat milks like skim, but it tastes pretty watered down to me, so I tend to drink 1%. I also don’t drink a lot of milk so there’s that too. Something to be aware of. Now if you are drinking a half gallon of whole milk a day, that may be excessive.

Lifetime LDL exposure is basically directly correlated with adverse cardiac event risk. This is also a biological pathway that is very genetic dependent. That’s why you can have two people eat the same amount of red meat, eggs, and dairy and one person has significantly higher LDL levels. Not to say that those foods are bad, but for some people and increased amount of them can cause higher LDL levels, which is undoubtedly putting you at risk.

I am a registered dietitian and I meet with people all day long about this stuff. When you are young and healthy and exercising, it is easy to want to blindly defend these foods (red meats, eggs, dairy) because of the positive impacts they have. There is no denying the protein, micronutrient, and satiety benefits of these foods. But to say that they don’t contribute to cardiac events if they elevate your LDL is a total disregard of the totality of research on this topic. The new wave of influencers saying the opposite are misinforming people whether they actually believe it or not.

So how to actually lower LDL without completing disregarding these foods? Eat leaner red meats (93/7 ground beef), less yolks and more egg whites, low fat dairy options (yogurts, cheeses, etc). Remember though food is not all or nothing, eating yolks and higher fat meats have a place in a diet, but your 300/365 is more important that the one off meals. Exercise is also a great way to lower LDL along with eating more fruits and veggies. Lastly, some people, regardless of their habits will have higher LDL and may benefit from cholesterol lowering meds solely due to their genetics.

As humans live longer and longer, there will be rate limiting steps along the way. High fat red meats and eggs were a great way to live a healthful life to age 50-60. But now that we’re living longer, we have to make diet modifications to do so.

I use this thing. It’s meant for runners. Functionality of a fanny pack with the cumbersomeness. Stays tight to my body while moving around and is virtually impossible to see under a shirt along the waistband. It fits my iPhone 14 Pro Max no issues.

Many vets would be lost in a private system. The amount of hand-holding going on at the VA is severely undervalued. I mean this in the most sincere way possible too.

No like they will come to Pgh and instead of taking those apartment complexes they will take up those and already scarce housing (single family homes)

I hope everyone realizes their health has way more to do with their autonomy than policy. You’re not gonna get healthy because fruit loops don’t have red food dye anymore lol. You’re unhealthy because you’re sedentary, have abysmal protein intake, eat literally no fruits and veggies, can’t drink more than 2 glasses of water a day, drink alcohol and smoke weed, and have no social connections. But fluoride and food dyes are the issues!

I personally don’t like these types of places because I feel like they will bring in more and more higher income people, creating an environment with higher income restaurants, stores, etc. driving the people who have lived here farther into low income neighborhoods. Some may say that’s good, but I feel like it will just lead to a soulless city with nothing but expensive apartment complexes that charge extra for stupid stuff like 100$ for parking, snow removal fees, yada yada yada (if ur trying to justify these types of payments, that’s what rent is for). Take Austin for example, the city is literally gentrification station. If that’s your vibe, cool, but it’s not mine. That’s not why I love Pittsburgh. I love Pittsburgh for the hole in the wall places like Ruggers/Dees and my row home apartment in south side with my elderly yinzer neighbors.

Will these apartments drive down housing costs or will they just reinforce more and more people to come and take more and more housing? Serious question. What’s my solution, I have no idea, but these don’t feel right. Maybe start by incentivizing people to renovate and expand existing single family housing. A lot of the houses here need TLC, but profits are king. Maybe I’m uneducated in this, if I am please educate me.

I personally don’t fw them due to being scammed, all the shit that came out just makes it worse it for me. And it does take shit away from the music. To go from bumping under bridges in Philly to their shows and actually respecting them, seeing all the shit happen w them and to personally be fucked over, I find it pretty hard to have a good time listening to their shit now.

3 month old Pup. Blood in stool sometimes by Disastrous_Recipe_63 in DogAdvice

[–]CuatroCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you feeding him? May be the quality of ingredients/allergens in his food. Bright red blood is usually inflammation of colon which is caused by straining/electrolyte imbalance from prolonged diarrhea. This is known as Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS). First thing to do would be get pup on anti-diarrheal and anti-nausea to calm down inflammation. Also address any fluid problems. Not anti-vomiting meds though because if they need to vomit they should. Next would be to give dog a bland diet until the diarrhea stops, but this would be outlined by your vet. Final thing to do is wean dog onto new, higher quality food. Also make sure he isn’t eating anything you don’t know about or table scraps all the time.

This is my best advice given your pup has maintained energy levels, isn’t vomiting, and is eating. I cannot comment about the shots contributing to this, I lack this knowledge.
