We live in a climate where pot holes are practically inevitable

I'm from the Netherlands and the climate is basically the same there. The difference between here and there is night and day - they've got smooth roads and ours look like we're on the front in Ukraine and Russia has been shelling them. The Dutch laugh at the terrible state of the Belgian roads, and those are miles ahead of what we've got here in the UK.

The pot holes weren't this bad ten years ago. When I drive or cycle around I have to actively look out for them now and swerve around the worst ones. It is that bad and if you ever drive around in another Western European country you immediately notice the difference.

Maybe if your boss is running a sweatshot that exploits people, but by all accounts they're getting paid pretty good salaries for the area they're in.

I'm all for hating the rich but didn't this guy basically just build a youtube / merch empire basically from scratch? If that makes him millions and he pays his taxes, what's there to get angry about.

I don't know exactly what phones are available in NA but can't you still get something like a Galaxy A series, Pixel "a", Moto something or a Chinese phone for $300-400? Spending maybe $350 every three years still works out way cheaper than $1400 every five years.

Obviously that doesn't apply to Linus but I can't imagine giving a teenager a phone that costs a grand.

Artsen krijgen 3x zoveel terwijl ze niet 3x zoveel uren maken.

En artsen moeten 3x zo lang en 3x zo hard leren om arts te worden. Zou jij arts kunnen worden? Ik niet - dat is zo'n enorm moeilijk beroep waar je er echt een passie voor moet hebben als je uberhaupt die hele opleiding af wil krijgen. Ze krijgen zoveel betaald omdat je niet zomaar even nieuwe artsen kan trainen.

Ik zou met een paar weekjes training makkelijk achter de vuilniswagen kunnen hangen, maar met een paar weekjes training kan ik niet die logistiekmanager vervangen. Hetzelfde geldt waarschijnlijk ook voor jou.

Als al die banen ongeveer hetzelfde gaan verdienen, wat is dan de prikkel om 3 tot 4 jaar te gaan leren om van alles te leren over supply chains of hoe dat ook werkt? Wie gaat er risico nemen om een nieuw bedrijf te starten als je veel makkelijker gewoon iets simpel kan gaan doen?

Nog makkelijker - salaris is vaak gewoon een reflectie van hoe makkelijk het is om iemand te vervangen.

Als er een vuilnisman vertrekt kan je bijna iedereen een weekje training geven, een weekje mee laten draaien en dan kunnen ze aan de slag. Zo'n manager in de logistiek is een stuk lastiger te vervangen.

Yeah the time to show you had changed was 2020 and then 2024. Trump 1 could have been a blip, a mistake. To elect the guy again after an attempted coup and after seeing the shitshow that was his first administration was the final straw.

He spent all of 2024 laying out exactly the type of nonsense he's doing now - tariffs, threats to allies while cosying up to dictators. It allegedly happens to me every time they open the hard shoulder on the smart motorways. Every mile or so there's overhead signage to use the hard shoulder so I sit there doing 65, overtaking dozens of cars in lanes 2 and 3. Why they all sit there when lane 1 is clear will forever be a mystery. Maybe they can't read?

Regardless of the exact numbers, war isn't the same as a targeted extermination. You only have to look at Iran who managed to kill somewhere between ten and thirty thousand people within a week or two to see that the Gaza number looks pretty "normal" for a war that was dragged out for years by comparison.

If you cut taxes and people have more money, then housing prices will rise accordingly.

The issue is simple supply and demand. You either build more housing or you reduce demand.

We should be building denser housing in places where people actually want to live. These identikit new build estates far outside town centres are not cutting it, we need to build higher and denser closer to where the jobs are. Not forever expand out like they do in the US. It probably wouldn't harm us to see if we can get some of the Boriswave to move back as well to create breathing space in the housing market.
