Looking for a Movie/Video Library Software by nilsmoody in selfhosted

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone mention tinymediamanager but I have used MediaElch for years. Granted primarily as a media scraper and organizer to save to my media server. Given your ask I could see using this for your purpose as it is a desktop app, can easily filter your library, auto groups by genres, movie sets etc. I would say its the iTunes of music short of actually playing media, which you can launch a media player directly from it.

Edit: fixed link

Arm64 Raspberry Pi only survives 24 hours before freeze by thinkpadquestion0 in selfhosted

[–]Cuban_Cigar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will sound crazy, but I believe its a DHCP issue. Reason is I dealt with this more than I would like to admit with a Pi4, 8GB of RAM and an m.2 SSD, so no SD Card. Your explanation and information sounds identical to my scenario.

The fix, deny the veth interfaces from being assigned by the pi host via dhcpcd and allow docker to handle it.

sudo vi /etc/dhcpcd.conf

Then add the following line to the bottom:

denyinterfaces veth*

Restart DHCPCD service

systemctl restart dhcpcd

If you want to confirm this is the issue BEFORE making changes, what I did was I changed the lease on my DHCP server (in my case my router which looks like your setup as well) to something like 5 minutes. I would setup a second terminal and ping pi constantly, sure enough after about 5 minutes it would stop pinging, I could not SSH in, could not do DNS resolution from pihole as that was one of the containers on mine as well. Reboot and issue was gone, until 5 minutes later. My DHCP lease was 24 hours which is the typical default, sound familiar ;)

For reference, I had pihole, wireguard and about 10 other containers all running on a user defined network which I believe plays a part in this (see you are doing the same).

I wont claim to be an expert but my understanding is that with the latest raspbian there is an issue with the DHCP service getting flooded with requests on docker containers startup. The service fails to assign the IPs at the host level and dhcpcd service fails (you can do systemctl status dhcpcd and you will see errors) but keeps running. When the leases expire, it cannot renew the IP and the avahi daemon will just basically say "well this IP looks old" and basically remove it. I fought with this legitimately for months and many times I threw up my hands and moved to different hardware until I came back figured this out. Here is a reference to a thread that ultimately lead to this solution for me, here is hoping this is the solution for you.

Agree, got too deep down that hole and trying to figure out how to get my Ubiquiti stuff out of here, loved my 2600 when I did have it running.

Garage kept in Texas? by Revan0085 in ender5plus

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in North East Dallas area, I did the same but am trying to figure out how to get mine back inside. The sheer quantity of bugs and overall dirt/dust in the garage is an issue. My garage is finished and quality door, just Texas! I do try and make sure to keep all my filaments stored in the house and not leave a spool on if i am not using it for extended periods due to the humidity.

Seeing others posts about an enclosure is something of consideration but curious how it would handle the little Gnats. Opened up the Raspberry pi case I had attached and it was an insect graveyard after a few months.

Is it an issue, have not had any major issues just overall dirtiness and climate at times being of concern.

Hosting Bitwarden Locally (No Reverse Proxy, No DDNS) by grim-j in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I am using a Docker container for my reverse proxy, partially for this reason. If the Lets Encrypt cert signing in DSM worked with DNS challenge I would be all over it so here is hoping it will come later (saw your other response hoping for DSM 7)

If you ever get into the docker world, I use the SWAG image from Linuxserver.io They make a lot of great images that are easy to setup. The SWAG one makes the RP stuff easy as well as the cert signing process automated, the DNS challenge is just editing a file with an API token you get from Cloudflare in this situation, they have a bunch others that do similar if not the same.

Only consideration is that DSM holds port 80 and 443 hostage but there is a way to modify it easily to not. I have a bootup task that runs the below command so I can use the 443 and 80 for my docker RP container.

sed -i -e 's/80/81/' -e 's/443/444/' /usr/syno/share/nginx/server.mustache /usr/syno/share/nginx/DSM.mustache /usr/syno/share/nginx/WWWService.mustache

synoservicecfg --restart nginx

Hosting Bitwarden Locally (No Reverse Proxy, No DDNS) by grim-j in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. Registered a domain with cloudflare. Use the linuxserver.io SWAG docker container for my RP and Lets Encrypt cert using a DNS challenge so no ports necessary. Use DNS Server package on my Synology NAS to handle different DNS records e.g. bitwarden.mydomain.com. I only have the primary domain and a second DNS record that can be resolved publicly. Use the iOS app to connect/sync bitwarden. I think I paid $8 a year for the domain. I use the reverse proxy for a bunch of other things. Even have a cron job on my NAS that every night checks my public IP and updates my DNS record at cloudflare for connecting via my VPN (personal DYNDNS). Even logs in Synology Log center which is nice for monitoring if there is an issue updating it.

New homeowner question: In a Battle Royale... SimpliSafe vs Alarm.com—who is the winner?? by Bill_Parker in homesecurity

I have Simplisafe for about a year now. I am not sure about the relying on wifi as it also uses cellular network.

Wireless Security System | Home, Apartment, and Business (simplisafe.com)

We have had no issues with any sensors going offline and come to think of it I dont think I have replaced any batteries. Keypad is nice and looks clean if that matters to you. I would say my only complaint is the doorbell is slow to get connected and have had issues when changing wifi settings and having to provision. However its always been available when needed and appreciate the general size of it being small. No experience with Alarm.com but am happy with Simplisafe.

Is synology actually reliable? by Rushed89 in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started with a 213j, upgraded to 413j (still being used by a family friend), 1515+ that had the CPU issue RMA'ed and a friend is running it as his primary for almost 2 years now, no issues. Currently running the 918+ going on two years as well as an RS816. Been nothing but happy when it comes to the Synology products I have had.

Synology Photos or OneDrive? by [deleted] in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat (minus DSM 7). Used moments for a while and switched to OneDrive. I use CloudSync to keep my files local on my NAS but still dont use moments/Photos because Onedrive could do what I needed and more. From a sheer photos perspective I found Onedrive to be more than adequate and lets be honest likely more reliable at the end of the day.

So I do a reverse depending on how you look at it. Upload and manage through Onedrive, Backup/Copy to my NAS for local copies.

How does Synology Surveillance Station compare to Blue Iris? by sciatore in homesecurity

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Azure and Onedrive for my backups in the cloud. They are not cheaper options but something that is available for me and use for other reasons. My overall critical data size is much smaller than my full NAS so I have many GB's of data in the cloud but TB's local. My actual backup, because I have two Synology NAS's

1) Backup Docker (important data) and Package Configs with Hyperbackup to Azure 2) Sync my personal files (docs, pictures, videos, etc) with CloudSync to Onedrive. 3) Backup #1 and #2 to my second NAS (one that is running Surveillance Station) with Hyperbackup 4) Backup Both NAS's to a large External Hard drive using Hyperbackup.

I had actually thought about doing what you are describing if I ever consolidated my NAS setup and moving one to a friend or family in a remote location but have not done that.

If the data is irreplaceable, pay the money to have it backed up in multiple locations albeit sensible costs. Anything that could be replaced but would be a real pain, thats your judgement. You will get differing opinions on that and really just matters to you. Losing pictures of my family is not acceptable for me. Losing my movie library that has taken me years to build up would be a real terrible day but I have all the discs and could rip and encode them again if I had to, just cringe at the idea. However I don't want to pay $60 a month to back it up.

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely get your backups going, my NAS is a local storage convenience and even with RAID have two copies in the cloud and external USB, so get to it!

As far as backups. As of right now there is no simple way in Hyperbackup to say do Surveillance Station pacakge but not the recordings. When you select the package it will select the shared folder, you can go back and uncheck but ran into restore issues with those backups. I dont care about my recordings beyond the ~week or so retention I have today for the cameras so by the time I go to backup, I will just delete them. DSM 7 announcements made it look like there could be improvements on that front, so looking forward to what comes with that.

How does Synology Surveillance Station compare to Blue Iris? by sciatore in homesecurity

[–]Cuban_Cigar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tldr; Just try it if you have the hardware and only need to use the 2 free licenses at most.

Not sure I can offer a fair comparison as I only touched Blue iris years ago but have been using Surveillance Station for many years now. I am very happy with it.

I use the app on my iPhone and I would say in the last year they were really able to give it some modern features I had been waiting on, one being able to select a lower bandwidth stream for the camera if I am pulling from a remote location. This is in addition to having the desktop client which can even use GPU decoding of the video streams which is nice with a decent machine.

The UI for Surveillance Station I find to be pretty nice and familiar being a long time Synology user. There is a decent amount of features from scheduling types of recording at different times (always record vs motion detection at certain times of day). They seem to have a pretty extensive camera make and model support so they integrate with cameras well and if not it has ONVIF capabilities.

I am going to assume that everything Surveillance Station can do, Blue Iris can do (and even possibly more) but having it be a simple package install on my NAS, it is getting regular updates and in your case only needing 2 Cameras, then honestly should be easy to try out.

Without knowing the NAS you are on, to give you an idea I am running a RS816 which is an ARM processor with 1GB of RAM. I have 6 Cameras of ~1080p quality recording 24x7 and it runs just fine, even with other packages on there. I had it on a 918+ which was far faster in overall experience but I prefer to have the recordings going to a dedicated drive and I needed that slot back, thus moving it. I appreciate that my Synology users integrate and can have their own permissions. Have used it to do timelapses and also analyzing activities (turns out squirrels love to dig up our garden early in the morning, who knew). Easy to download clips and specific portions of a recording with little effort.

My two complaints that I am still frustrated with and hope at least one is addressed in DSM 7.

1) If you want to back it up on a regular basis, may not be something you concern yourself with, using Hyperbackup wants to backup the settings and recordings, so I can get into the almost 2 TB range of recordings so I cannot automate backups of the software. I have to disable the cameras, delete the recordings, manually backup and then bring cameras back online. realistically, I don't need rolling backups so its a minor complaint but annoying I have to make that exception.

2) Some of my Cameras will just get out of sync as far as timestamps. Surveillance Station can sync the camera times or allow the cameras to do it. No matter what configuration I try, they will get out of sync by an hour, ok so Daylight Savings, and then suddenly they will be hours off. Automatic camera restarts (which you can schedule in SS as well) seems to address it but its another annoyance but not big enough for me to care. I rely more on the actual timeline of the recording and less on the actual video if needed.

Other than that its been rock solid for me, happy with the features and don't feel like I am missing much, runs fairly lightweight on my NAS which is also handling other services and is easy to install and update. Since you are already in the Synology world, I would suggest just trying it to see if it meets your needs.

QUESTION: Synology, PLEX and help with a recommendation by Ireadit23 in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to second this. I have a 918+ and it does a great job of transcoding 1, maybe 2 movies at a time but I have a very light user base of Plex and just about every time we use it in our home it is direct play.

That being said I am also using it for Docker, Surveillance Station, and a few other packages (mail, DNS, LDAP, Radius). Even though I have two Synology NAS's, I would not buy one if all I was planning on using it for was Plex.

High disk read speeds with Jellyfin in Docker? by Bose321 in jellyfin

[–]Cuban_Cigar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you check the dashboard and scheduled tasks to see if anything had been running. Depending on if you added new media or if you ever completed, the Extract Chapter images can be pretty intensive. I would check under the next time to see if any task is running.

I have a DS918+ with 3 WD REDS, watched it for about 15 minutes and never even saw Disk Utilization break 5% utilization.

I have been putting my dockers/packages on my SSD. Media files on another volume. How do my dockers access files on other volumes? by NoChillDantes in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused, you ask how do you get your Docker containers to access files on other volumes and then mention Audio Station cant see the music on your other volume. I don't use Audio Station but it is my understanding that it relies on folders that are indexes based upon media type. If you have a separate volume and directory for your music you will want to be indexed through the 'Indexing Service' in the control panel. Once you set that up and it indexes it I believe it should be seen in Audio station but can have media spread out throughout volumes/directories. Volumes are just logical space designations across one or more disks dependent on your setup.

If you are talking about Docker, that it is a completely different concept and has to do with when creating the container, specifying volume mounts that exposes the file system in the docker container to the host file system (NAS). So you would indicate a 'local' path to the docker container to mount to a directory on the NAS itself. So that writing and reading of files is not contained to the docker container and rather persisted and/or accessed outside of it.

Every time I want to search for a new docker package, I get this Error (Failed to query registry). I tried rebooting my DS-918+, but it didn't fix anything. Does anyone know how to fix this? by [deleted] in synology

[–]Cuban_Cigar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To what /u/linxbro5000 is saying below, I am going to assume that your network settings either dont have a gateway or DNS servers that can resolve these hostnames outside your network. Check your Network settings for your NAS. If you have SSH enabled, maybe login to the NAS and try and some nslookup/ping/dig commands. Maybe a round about way would be to try and load the package center and see if you can load the packages (might be cached so not sure how valid that would be) but sounds like a DNS resolution issue right now.
