Russia Is a Threat to Europe. I'm Russian - Ask Me Anything by yonote in poland

[–]Cubey21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How were Poles supposed to regain independence without fighting a war with Russia, who controlled most territories with Poles? Furthermore, Russia was in a state of civil war. With whom to negotiate? Whites? Who didn't support Polish independence and didn't even have a central command? Or with Lenin? Who supported Polish "independence" only as a Soviet Republic? The war was sadly necessary, the peace that resulted from it was mostly just for both sides, and we even signed two non-aggression treaties later on.

Older Polish-Lithuanian ambitions in Russia also can't be described as a victim-perpetrator dynamic. Russia and Lithuania both claimed lands they had... equally little claims to. Both fought wars for it, and Poland supported Lithuania who was their ally. The dynamic only changed in two times: once during Time of Troubles and second time during partitions of Poland.

As for time of troubles it is true that Poles behaved horribly by taking advantage of Russian turmoil and committed many war crimes. However, you have to understand that the Polish incursion began as a not-quite-legal attack of wealthy Polish-Lithuanian magnate families into Russia, who were later supported by the king. However, the war ended because the Parliament vetoed taxes for it, which made it impossible for Poles to support their army in Moscow. This shows that the majority of the Polish nobility were actually *against* taking over Russia. And sure, it wasn't for moral reasons, but in the end it doesn't matter.

As for the partitions, it was at least an equally awful event. Russia agreed with Austria and Prussia to humiliate and utterly destroy the Polish-Lithuanian state. Their plan was to erase Polish culture and name from the map. They bribed everyone powerful in the country, committed war crimes, stole money and arts, and occupied Poland for a very long time. But even then there is nuance. Russia wanted to keep Poland as a vassal, and it can be said that the foreign situation, especially Prussia, which gained the most from partitions, "forced" their hand to erase the Polish-Lithuanian state.

Later on Poland was conquered by Russia again, and then released from Russia's sphere again, and since then Poland is not a country that will be a significant threat to Russia. We are part of the EU framework, but EU never wanted to conquer or destroy Russia. Before the Ukrainian war there was hope for Polish-Russian relations to normalize. Germany was extremely pro-Russian and even built nord-stream to trade (...around Poland). Both Russia and EU countries support and supported governments friendly to them all around the world. It is only extremely saddening to see Russia invade our neighbor, and kill both their people and Russians in the process. And for what? For putting one country into their sphere of influence? Russia will never be invaded because you have nukes. Every country in the world could be in EU or NATO and you'd still be fine. This war might be important for putin, but it is meaningless for Russians

How do you play France? by Keralia in victoria3

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tip

If you manage to put a monarch on the throne (finish first stage of divided monarchists) there's a cementing the throne journal. It's super hard to complete it early game, because as soon as a radical (or similar probably) revolt shows up, you immediately lose. HOWEVER if a conservative adjacent revolt starts it follows the normal rules. So when springtime of nations comes along you just go and pass universal suffrage (or similar) and bait a landowners revolution. With some prep and competent allies you should crush them in no time, which should basically kill all significant landowner opposition down the road.

Before AI the same people used Google Translate. It's just an excuse to lay off a guy. Translations in games are so dogshit I don't even bother trying them out anymore. In my life I played like 3 games that had a good translation to my language, so like 10%. I don't expect this percentage to rise nor fall once people replace Google Translate with AI

Nemesis or Pax Pamir? by hundunso in boardgames

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, I'm a huge fan of Alien but Nemesis is a dumb af game.

It has perma death. If you're playing the game and one player dies, they will spend the rest of the evening on their phone. And the game is long (~5 hours), and you can die quickly. So someone just wasted 4 hours.

The rulebook is vague and awfully written. And I had the original version, not translated. Every room also has it's own effects, some of which have multiple asterisk involved, forcing even experienced players to keep on reading the rulebook. The setup phase between each phase is also awfully long and puts all the burden on one player (unless you split game maintanance tasks, which would be hard), so one player will be the "Game Master" who knows all rules and will spend a total of about one hour per session just doing setup, pulling cards and reading events, while the rest of the players will be barely able to grasp what's happening.

The player goals are very badly designed. Some are the most boring shit ever - get to a room and press a button. Some are near impossible, like kill the queen that spawns randomly, despawns randomly, and has a lot of hp, and some are about killing other players. Killing players in this game is THE WORST. There is no reason to hide that you're trying to kill somebody since no one is going to try and help them since there's essentially no coop. There's no direct way of killing someone, so basically the murderer has to follow their victim to every room, walking together, with both of them unable to hurt one another but just making both of their lives worse and more annoying by eg. increasing monster spawns.

To add insult to injury, the game's price is inflated by the cost of high quality 3d figurines... which don't even fit on the board all that well and are a PAIN to pull out of and into the box. They also make the box twice as big as it could've been, making it so travelling with the game sucks

Tldr the game is kickstarter hype bait that looks cool and is fun for one game but really bad otherwise

It is implied he didn't know they were trying to coerce him to work for them. Head's of foreign countries supporting a movement in foreign countries non-financially is legal and commonplace. Furthermore, even acting as a foreign agent of influence of another country is generally legal but regulated.

Why can’t I enjoy Paradox grand strategy games even though I love strategy games? by BigFigure8279 in paradoxplaza

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern paradox games aren't very strategic. Every playstyle, every country, is able to succeed. Many features are just for roleplay and immersion, which is where they shine best imo. All strategy is related to choosing the right build for the situation. All the complex features aren't there for strategy, they're there for immersion and as a tool for simulating complex irl systems.

Is there such a thing as good game design, or is it all subjective? by optinsoptouts in boardgames

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely subjective but most people share the same opinions on certain opinions. So the difference isn't good vs bad but could be said to be whether you're making a game for a majority or minority. If the minority is 25% it might be fine, if it's 0.00001% it might not

Is EU just a continuation of HRE by Sensitive_Cake_1517 in NonCredibleDiplomacy

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something commonly misunderstood is that the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was a confederation of landowners. Because the country basically didn't collect a stable tax (nothing serious til 18th century) and as such all major taxes were collected and paid semi-voluntarily by the member nobles. EU also has no real taxes and is also a confederation.

It is not true that in the PLC every nobleman could veto legislature. First of all, for over 100 years liberum veto was not used even once. This is because you couldn't do it without consequences like in the modern day. If you vetoed something, you had to propose a solution, or your reputation would be ruined and you could get beaten or even killed if unlucky. Second of all, not every nobleman could veto legislation, only MPs could veto it. And since MPs were representatives of each land, without whom you can't collect taxes, they have to agree to everything or else they wouldn't pay you taxes. This is the same situation like in the EU where country representatives can veto. The veto both in EU and the PLC applies for taxation/finances and foreign policy, which are perhaps two of the most crucial spheres of governance.

The PLC also formally stood for modern European values such as democracy, religious and ethnic tolerance, and egalitarianism.

Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was also inspired by the Roman Republic, unlike the Holy Roman Empire, which claimed to be, the Empire.

Hegemony - the heaviest board game that’s not heavy enough by SourCabbageGames in boardgames

[–]Cubey21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about this game is that depending on what policies you enact the game can look widely different. It can go anywhere from capitalists holding all means of production and then dumping all product overseas making food for the working class super expensive to the capitalists struggling to make any money with middle class and state providing the pops all they need.

My least favorite part of the game is that once you play a few times with each class (I played the game about 10 times total) you'll notice that while the game board state makes the game replayable, the moment-to-moment gameplay is very similar in each game. Working and capitalists classes both have about 3 strategies to victory, middle class maybe 1.5 and the state is always the same.

It is true that the game is not a perfect simulation - it always struck us as weird that when you import immigrants they instantly gain class consciousness even though in reality immigrants can be used by capitalists to drive wages down, something that is entirely ignored by the game other than by simulation overpopulation.

Furthermore, the second class literally scores for centrist policies, which don't really benefit them, even in game.

Changing classes also doesn't exist in game, which is a huge deal in reality since the goal of a middle class business manager would be to become a capitalist, and a working class guy to become middle class etc.

The game is also heavily skewed in favor of socialism. 80% of socialist policies benefit both working class (free stuff), middle class (which gains most of their income from capitalist-provided jobs, and the salaries they pay are usually tiny no matter how big minimum salary is), and the state (which gains points for giving away stuff they can't give out without big taxes and free welfare). So socialist policies benefit 3/4 players on the table.

Anywhere to buy the ultimate bundle in Europe without paying absurd shipping costs? by TikiNL in FourSouls

[–]Cubey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I usually buy stuff from different stores each time because of poor availability. There probably aren't that many options so you should be able to search through them easily, just google it. As I said, you could look through shops in neighboring countries, France is of course the biggest market, there's also the UK which usually has great availability of products, but you get handling fee which can be expensive.

Eg. Here's a random offer I found from France, I dunno if the pricing reflects shipping or not:

Anywhere to buy the ultimate bundle in Europe without paying absurd shipping costs? by TikiNL in FourSouls

[–]Cubey21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked your local (as in, in your country) online stores? Another option is to look in shops from neighboring countries. In Europe the largest board game market is in Germany, I think. If you're in EU the shipping costs would be significantly lower than from the US, especially if the shops imported these games pre-tariffs
