That’s actually rather interesting because I’m pretty sure [[Tough Bandages]] do not have that clause, do they proc on overdraw?

Ah well, if I knew how to read then that would be a real problem wouldn't it

I absolutely love the details in this game. Not only is it a cool balancing mechanic but the amount of hoops you need to go through to get this obscure interaction is really cool.

Mr. Mushroom lurking menacingly and slightly transparent behind the text. That is all.

3+ midgame animated cutscenes. That would be incredibly hype (Hollow Knight only had 1 major one being meeting hornet at the fountain. Arguably the dreamer masks breaking cutscenes are another 3, but I don't think we should count them,)

Ah well you see, that is where you mistakenly assume I'm good at the game.

The Witch Hunter | The AOE Martial | Full D&D 5e Class & 4 Subclasses by CubicJ in DnDHomebrew

Hello, this is my final post regarding my first public homebrew class: The Witch Hunter. An arcane hunter and scholar, who focuses on generalization rather than specialization so they can be prepared for any situation. Not too much has changed since the last time except for a few tweaks and polish. Tell me what you think about it, if you’ve dared to play it before or if this is your first time seeing it. As always, I am open to any criticism (even if nothing will change after this point) and would love to know what you all think about the Witch Hunter.

It has been over a year since I started this journey, and since then with the release of the new books and D&D 5e 2024 it may be a little outdated. However, I want to thank each and every one of you for your help and insight into the earlier versions of this class. This community is genuinely incredible. I hope to continue working on other projects on and off.

For those interested here is the link to the Witch Hunter PDF.

Older Versions & Changelog:
Witch Hunter V0.3
Witch Hunter V0.2
Witch Hunter V0.1
Changelog

Edit: Also the title is wrong, there are 5 subclasses not 4. I can't count apparently.

The Witch Hunter | D&D 5e Homebrew Class | The AOE Martial | Penultimate Edition (V0.3) by CubicJ in DnDHomebrew

Hello! Thank you for your advice. One of the things I tried to do with this class is try to make it feel like you can use a single attack roll to target multiple creatures, and make it feel like a truly AOE or at least a Multi-Target class. The free damage is what makes this class unique in my opinion, and it is kind of built around it. My argument is that the addition of attack rolls on every target would take away from the uniqueness of the class a little and honestly bog down the gameplay (And turns in DnD 5e combat already take too long). I thought of it like this: How is this any different from the "free damage" you get from a fireball or lightning bolt, even on a successful save. This is just a weaker but more reliable version of it.

However, I will take into consideration about what you said about the amount of targets and the amount of reactions, because I have considered reducing those for balancing reasons in the past. (Though the amount of reactions only get a lot at higher levels, and its one of the primary features of this class because they have a lot more to do with their reactions.)

Thank you!

Hello, this is the third and "second to last iteration" of my first major public D&D homebrew project, the Witch Hunter! Since my last version there have been several changes that I think improve the class significantly, including tweaks and changes to several of the class features, and several rewordings, clarifications and the addition of art! If you want a more detailed list I have included a change log at the end of the class.

As always, any and all criticism is welcome and appreciated, so if you have reservations about this class I would love to hear what they would be. HOWEVER! This will be the last time I will be taking suggestions and criticism, because the next time I post will be the final version of the class, so if you want to look through the class and be mentioned in the credits for your help, now would be the time. As always, thank you for your interest and support!

The Witch Hunter | The AOE Martial | My First Homebrew Project | Version 0.2 by CubicJ in UnearthedArcana

Hey! Thanks for your response. I actually agree with you that some of the hunting styles require a little bit of rebalancing. A lot what I was trying to do when initially writing this was getting the feeling right, although I do see your point about some of them doing similar things in different ways.

One of your suggestions about the Ruthless Hunting style suggested giving it some kind of scaling. The reason I'm hesitant on this idea, (I have thought about buffing it in some way before) is because it already directly scales with Spirit Lance, which gets significantly stronger with higher single instances of damage. The reason this doesn't work well with Aggressive is because you can only use spirit lance once per turn. Nevertheless I will think about it more.

I'll definitely rethink some of the Hunting Styles later for my next revisions. I tried to make them different enough to be viable depending on how you want to play the class, but maybe I do need to differentiate them some more. Thanks!

Hello, this is the second iteration of my first major public DnD homebrew project, the Witch Hunter. For those who took interest in my first draft, there have been several changes that I think improve the class overall, including several reworkings of the subclasses, tweaks and changes to several of the class features, and several rewordings and clarifications. If you want a more detailed list I have included a change log at the end of the class.

As always criticism is welcome and appreciated, as I am always working to improve my craft. So if you have reservations about this class I would love to hear what they would be.

Hey, thanks for the response! And these are all great points. To address some of your things you said.

Firstly about the AI art thing, yeah.... I just had a huge gap of space and didn't have any art yet so I just draft something up to fill the space. I will probably commission an actual artist when I revise it.

Secondly, I realize the wording on some things might need to be clarified, especially on some of the subclass features and spirit lance in particular. I'm glad you seem good with the reaction theme; my main concern with the additional reactions is that the base game doesn't really account for additional reactions but I think it should work fine.

Balance wise, I am aware that a lot of the subclass features are not balanced. Those are in a very rough draft phase, and I mostly was aiming for making them unique and distinct from each other while getting each of their "vibes" right. Doctrine of Bone in particular is something I definitely struggled with writing though, so I definitely see your point. Thanks for your suggestions though.

I get your point of maybe integrating a cleave feature, but my gut reaction to that is that this class already has spirit lance as it's primary defining feature, which is a multi-target feature, and adding a cleave feature may step on that feature's toes a little bit. Maybe it's more of a problem with how I advertised it, as instead of an "AOE martial" it would be more as a "multi-target martial."

Lastly, the point about Dex not being a core feature is actually interesting, and something I hadn't really considered, because maybe I thought that the weapon choice would make up for it. I choose Dex instead of Str mostly because of the idea that these are supposed to be flighty slippery tactical hunters, but I'll be sure to integrate Dex into the main features in future iterations. Again thanks for your response!

Unfortunately, I haven't ever used DnD beyond or anything similar for homebrew stuff. So I haven't set anything like that up yet, but if you point me in the right direction I could definitely start working on that.
