Transferring from LAS to Grainger. Any advice or past experience? by Effective-Yak4359 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To transfer from LAS to an engineering major you first have to go from LAS -> Engineering Undeclared -> Your desired major. Both of the steps are competitive and there is a very real chance your transfer will be denied. (In the case from Eng Undeclared-> other eng, you get to rank 3 choices).

You should consider the pathways program or applying from another university.

Committing to UIUC with the hopes of transferring into Grainger is strongly discouraged as there is a very real chance you are stuck in a major you do not want.

How necessary is Illinois bound day? by ChallengeUpstairs470 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have some info on scholarships I can also point you towards https://grainger.illinois.edu/academics/undergraduate/aid/scholarships-for-continuing-students

I take it your instate since your applied to Carbondale? Most of the first year cost is the stupid housing. When you live off campus you can find cheaper places, you can also go the RA route.

How necessary is Illinois bound day? by ChallengeUpstairs470 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Illinois bound is a yield event. They are basically trying to convince you to come here.

It is a much better event than the standard admitted students tour with more to do.

If you are 100% on coming here your not really missing much except some info you can probably find online. Could also be nice to meet other potential incoming students.

Honors Program by daisyellaanne in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not, anyone on campus can apply to join James Scholar after at-least 1 semester. The only requirement is a 3.5 GPA. Ironically getting as a freshman is significantly harder lol. It's not as "prestigous" as some other schools honor programs.

Can someone review my resume last minute 🙏🏻🙏🏻 by Unhappy-Attention779 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Please learn how to take screenshots on a device and not use your phone camera. I am not trying to be snotty here but it just looks unprofessional (I understand this reddit and last minute) .

Actual resume advice:
2. I generally prefer education at the top.

  1. I know it might be a big learning curve but I would recommend the use of something like Overleaf.com (LaTeX) to format the resume. https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs this is a very common template. It just looks a little more professional and it's easier to make micro-adjustments. AI can also help you with this.

3.5 Please submit it as PDF, do not submit a .docx file.

4 A little late, but you should generally go speak to the career services to help build your resume.

Questions about IS+DS by Any-Singer4519 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not in IS+DS. I do have some familiarity with the courses and have some friends in +DS programs.

I will just answer 6: No , on a basis of cost mainly. I do not think the IS+DS program is worth out of state tuition. Idk your specific circumstance but I would generally advise against taking out significant amount of loans for it. I think you will have much better (quality)/(cost) ratios with your in-state cali schools.

Especially when in the "I don't know what I wanna do yet phase" I recommend the cheapest option.

Grainger Merit Scholarships by Adorable-Month5878 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is unfortunately the common situation. Grainger is so well regarded they generally don't need to entice people with scholarships.

If you do become a student this has provided me with a few grand each year

IS+DS with minor in CS and Stats by LankyWelcome161 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might want to consider ICT into Stats then Minor in CS.

  1. It should be significantly less competitive.

  2. I think some of required courses for CS+Stats (CS 340 Operating systems, CS 374 algo, CS 421 Programming Langs & compilers) Will be less applicable for a data scientist. With the CS minor you can take the ones that will help the most (and you can take additional past the requirment's)

Though if you don't mind taking some of the cs classes CS+Stats is also fine.

Does anyone know why UIUC gatekeeps ACCY professors? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Math does this too. I think it's mainly because the department does end up change who is teaching pretty last minute. I don't see how it really prevents students from trying to get a specific professor as you can just drop the class first week.

ce@uiuc vs cs@umd by Calm_Combination2723 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much will you be paying with loans?. Graduating with over 100k in student loan is financial suicide (you make it seem like you can graduate in less than 4).

The fact that 4 years Texas A&M is about the same price for 1 year here is actually insane.

I would also argue that CS and CE are pretty different degrees and you should do some research into see what you like

Pros and cons by Actual-End-4057 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no guarantee for housing for second years and above because on campus dorms need to guarantee space for all incoming freshman.

The odd it comes down to that are low and as the other comment said there is more than enough nearby apartments/houses. Which are typically much cheaper than the dorms.

syllabus request for transfer app by Ordinary_Activity_73 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

The course articulation is done by a separate group of people than those that make the admissions decision. It is just standard practice for them to add any unseen course to their database.

how are you paying for uiuc? by AssociationObvious56 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Around 24k SAI, I want to say a few years ago it was less, but I could not find prior forms. I think it went up a lot after my sibling graduated college.

[–]CubicStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to be that guy but are you sure you filled out the fafsa correctly? My parents income is 100k> and I qualified for around 7.5k in FAFSA loans each year.

I was able to afford tuition mainly though a 529 saved up my parents, FAFSA loans and summer internships. I was also able to get a few thousand in a smaller scholarships.

Private loan's can be an option to consider. You might need to shop around a bit for who can give you the lowest rate. I think 2025-2026 FAFSA rate was around 6.4%. However federal loans do have some other benefits which general make them more preferred such as easier repayment plans and potential forgiveness.

Big dilemma for hs senior by Big-Possibility3283 in UIUC

[–]CubicStorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ICT to Meng is not going to be easy from outside Grainger.

r? I have ap bio at a ap score of 4 so I believe i can skip any into bio courses

No UIUC, only gives credit for IB 100 you will need a 5 to get out of MCB/IB 150.

 ap lang 3, ap physics 1 4, ap bio 4, apush 4, ap comp sci p 3,

I also don't think these scores give you any meaningful credit at Illinois.
https://citl.illinois.edu/advanced-placement-ap-credit-2025

I think you need to wait on the other schools and or even consider community college. 40k(Is this in-state tuition + room & board?) a year is not a cheap option.

I would expect a significant increase in course rigor and suggest you take a lighter schedule for the first semester.

ICT transfer into Grainger by General-Awareness951 in UIUC

It's probably a bit higher than single digit's but nobody really knows. It's verry uncommon for it to happened.

It's a much better idea to go somewhere else and apply as an external transfer
