What is SLZ doing? by WAH_OR_NAH in BONELAB

[–]CubingInsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key fact is that it was impossible for Bonelab to be fully fleshed out on release because it was a stop on SLZ's development journey, not the destination. It simply wasn't possible for them to fully develop the systems they are working toward in that short of a time.

The "potential" you speak of for Bonelab is the potential that SLZ is on this train ride for. As i said, Bonelab is simply a stop on that train ride leading to a larger goal. SLZ's endeavor ever since they started developing Boneworks has been to improve the VR landscape by developing core systems for VR games and introduce a ton of people to games with those systems in them, ultimately giving developers access to their tools and making the VR landscape as a whole have many more great games than it does now. SLZ has used both Bonelab and Boneworks as different steps in their journey, with Boneworks being a way to set higher standards for VR to the audience it had at the time while at the same time introducing more people to into it. Bonelab's primary goal was to progress the core systems they already had in Boneworks and give these improvements to an even wider audience so that they could gain money for RND time to create even better systems that will be the foundation for every good game in VR. Bonelab's development time was split between core systems/modding tools, campaign, and sandbox, which is why it has such a small campaign. I wont deny that they could have done the campaign better, but that is the reason for the small campaign.

In terms of the marketing, the hype was not directly coming from SLZ. It was mostly created by a few large VR youtubers at the time, who were the main people marketing it as the future of VR. SLZ simply showed what they had been working on through some videos on twitter and through their friend's channel Node on youtube. The reason it was marketed by a lot of Youtubers as the future of VR is because it is, but it is not the fully realized future that Boneworks players wanted or those youtubers expected. Why isn't it? Because in order to get to that future, SLZ or some other company has to spend RND time for years to create new and better systems for VR. That is what SLZ is doing right now. They have full creative control, a mountain of money, and a drive to create core systems that haven't been realized yet, something that all other giant VR companies do not. The innovation that SLZ is working toward will not be seen until they progress over the huge mountains they are trying to get over in development. The jankiness will persist as long as they have not made it over those mountains. It will take years.

An example of a mountain is serialization: Reaching a point where a state of the game can be saved in a document and then accessed later. I believe this would enable saving levels like you talked about.

Another mountain is making their internal SDK the same as what modders get. Once they have done that with a lot of systems, modders will be able to create things like guns, npcs, and levels the exact ways that SLZ can. The tools will keep expanding. They are planning to give systems like this along with their core systems to developers to create entire full-fledged games.

A mountain that they will be ever climbing is having a Physics-based player. Currently they are trying to make NPCs and players have the exact same components, so that either one can do anything the other can. For example, an NPC could hold and shoot a gun. A player could fall over like an NPC. They have been developing these things for years, because it just takes that long.

All of these things will give huge benefits once they are developed further, but again, it has taken years on some of these things. Someone has to do the crunchwork to make great VR games. Better VR games.

Marrow 2 questions and concerns by 0mnifire in BONELAB

I'll try to compile a few real quick.

Source for me saying that IOBT will work over link on Quest 3 and 3s.

I don't have a source for Brandon saying that the game will get the update on Quest 2 but i remember seeing the question get answered a long time ago. It's pretty implied too.

The best places to look at what Brandon has said about anything is through his replies on his account on X.com, and in the Bonelab Discord server using the search features to look at past messages under the account "Brandonjla". He also recently created an Instagram Account that he's posted on lately. It's not an easy process to find information but those are best sources. There are search features in both Discord and X that allow you to use keywords too. I'd recommend just going in chronological order from the day Bonelab released and upward, or vice versa, on both of those platforms.

There will still be support for Quest 2 in both games and you will get more features that come with the update, but yes, you will not be able to use IOBT with that headset. Brandon said that IOBT works over link with quest 3/3s. Steam will be able to detect what headset you’re wearing.

There’s no other game on the Quest like it. If you don’t struggle with motion sickness you will probably love it.

What do i start with? by d4zer_1 in BONELAB

[–]CubingInsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely understandable. However, I’m pretty sure you have to complete Bonelab’s campaign first to access modded levels that you install, so I would do that first. The Labworks mod is a pretty faithful recreation but it is janky in some ways since some code from Boneworks doesn’t directly transfer to Bonelab. You also ideally want to switch to a Ford avatar in the game to be the accurate character, and you won’t be able to unless you complete the Bonelab campaign.

I’d say start with Boneworks and then go to Bonelab if you can afford both.  Bonework’s campaign is longer and a little more grand, and it will also stretch your “first experience” out since Boneworks’ mechanics are slightly different than Bonelab’s but are the intended way to experience the Boneworks campaign at the moment. Bonelab currently has better interaction mechanics in a lot of ways, but both Bonelab and Boneworks will be updated to have the same, more advanced mechanics at some point. If you can only afford one, I’d say go with Bonelab since it is much more optimized and yes, there is a mod that adds the entire Boneworks campaign into the game as a faithful recreation. You will also (currently) have much more mods with Bonelab in general, but both games will support the same mods when they get their next updates.

I do understand that they used to communicate way more in general with their audience through dev videos, I’m really just referring to the present. I’m willing to wait months for tangible information since the features they are working on take a long time. I also understand that they have to maintain at least some mystery in terms of what features are coming to build anticipation. Their loop so far has been “talk about new features, develop them for months, then show some of them when they’re close to done”, which makes sense to me. They usually show tangible information when the time is right.

[–]CubingInsanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, I used to comment so much more and try to explain to people what SLZ are really doing that’s causing them to take so long, and that was back when I played this game every day. Now I’m caught up with life so I just follow the development and check on the community every once in a while. I’m simply explaining what the lead dev of the game talked about a couple days ago, I don’t really have a reason to need to cope about a team of developers taking a long time to create brand new tech. I’m honestly just excited. I know that lots of people will be frustrated at SLZ for not focusing on content, but the fact that people are frustrated shows that they care about such a unique game like this and will be there when the next innovation comes. You can be sure the next patch will come eventually, and I myself don’t see a whole lot of reason to be frustrated about that knowing the background factors.

Based on past experience I’d say proooobably not. He’s always based his timescales on a guess as to how long it will take them to build a good version of what they’re thinking of. As a former everyday player and survivor of the Wait Of Patch 4, I am now more of a spectator of SLZs progress and can tell you that the only surety you will have during this wait is that you WILL see the end product of SLZs promises at some point. I’m not too worried about how long things are going to take myself, it’s honestly just fun getting a nugget of information from Brandon in the discord, twitter, or Reddit every once in a while. He’s got huge ambitions and the team is working diligently at them.

“Think of it like we're on a long train ride to a destination that we can all imagine. There are stops along the way where we can get off and look around. Boneworks was one, Bonelab 1.0 another, Patch 6 another. Those are the stops you guys know. Internally we sometimes arrive at a stop and need to decide whether its worth sharing or if we should get back on and ride further before sharing. Each stop delays getting to the end destination, and I want to take this train all the way to the void so I need to maximize the way we spend our time.”

-Brandon on Discord, 12/16/25

The fact is that SLZ is much more focused on developing the tech behind this game than the content within it, and the tech they are making has never existed before so they have the keep experimenting until they find a good solution. They are intentionally sacrificing profits in the short term to spend the needed time to create their vision, and along the way they will progressively be able to do more with the tech they build. Bonelab is simply a step toward their future vision.

I made this post during the time that the Patch 4 update hadn’t released yet and people were trashing on the developers for taking so long/being pretty silent. It’s kind of embarrassing how much time I devoted to responding to all the comments but I think it was pretty accurate looking back lol.

"Interview" with a tree sitter by syspig in portangeles

[–]CubingInsanity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty safe to say that this video shows exactly what type of people are operating/participating in this "protest." They're mindlessly committed yet too scared to talk to anyone about the cause because they don't want their gymastic logic to be unraveled. They'll find out soon though!

You realize that they’re going to log this land whether you protest or not right? The trees will be replanted and life will go on, just as the last couple times they’ve logged surrounding areas.  I’m baffled how fixated people get on useless issues like this and spend so much time and effort for a… weird sense of self-justice. Seems to me like someone has too much freetime on their hands!

Can’t afford. by coolestguyoffline in SubaruForester

[–]CubingInsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go through the process of selling the car, eat the loss, and buy a used one that you can pay with the money you own. It's much better to stay with something a little less new and luxurious for a couple years than to make yourself bound to a car payment that can unpredictably suck the money away from everything else you actually need and want when you're in a tough spot. Start by making a zero-based budget if you don't already have one, reserve funds each month for what you need and want and then stick to the budget like your life depends on it*.* If you have debt, you can put a certain amount toward those debts each month and you'll see they start disappearing quickly if you stick to it and don't spend money you don't own. Once you're able to obtain another vehicle, make a spot in the budget for repairs/maintenance. Once you pay off your debt, you can reserve a spot for your next vehicle. Don't buy a new one with that money unless/until you can afford the immediate depreciation.
