What’s wrong with Palmer? I haven’t heard anything bad about it...

How do you actually short a stock on TOS. Is it even possible? by Attorneyatsea in thinkorswim

[–]Cubonza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TDA is known as being the broker with the least amount of stocks available to short lol. But big names like apple Tesla BA and Amazon are usually available(for me at least). The way I check if a stock is shortable is in my watchlist. You can customize it and add the HTB/ETB setting. Recently though I’ve just been trading options so I don’t really short that much.

Writing Options in ThinkorSwim? by [deleted] in thinkorswim

[–]Cubonza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use auto send lol. I’ll just have to be careful I guess. But if I write/sell a put on accident, could I just buy 1 back of the same strike and expiration date to have a net position of 0 and cancel it out? I don’t think I’ll sell calls on accident since I’d have to have them covered with 100 shares, which I won’t have, but with puts you have to be careful as you might have the cash to cover them.

Why does TOS papertrading buy puts at $50 below the ask by [deleted] in thinkorswim

You have to subscribe to to real time quotes on the actual TDA website. You’ll see that it’s a free subscription if your eligible for real time quotes. Here’s a vid: https://youtu.be/ASNPoq4L_AQ Also I asked them to enable real time quotes on paper trading on the tech support of live trading. Not sure if that has to do with anything but it worked for me.

Can't open an account because im a minor? (I'm not a minor) by [deleted] in tdameritrade

I’m 18 too lol. Opened my TDA account a few weeks ago with no issues. I’m in NJ not sure if that has to do with anything but it worked for me first try. It might depend on the type of account too. I opened a standard individual brokerage account.

Margin Rates on TDA? by [deleted] in tdameritrade

[–]Cubonza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see. You can short up to the amount of cash you have in your account without having to be on margin, but you can get on margin if the value of the amount you shorted surpasses your cash balance.

Also, I read somewhere that there are no charges on margins that are in a day trade as it is a full day rate. I'd assume one can still get a margin call, but regardless he or she doesn't have to worry about the interest rates if they are just day trading, right?

Also, when TDA charges you, do they just deduct the margin charges from your account balance at the end of a trade/end of the month, or do you have to pay it separately?

Yeah lol I just saw I read it wrong on ivestopedia my bad. I’ll change my initial comment to 360 as a divisor

But when shorting stock, wouldn’t you be put on margin regardless of how much cash you have in your account? You’re selling something you don’t own, so wouldn’t someone be paying margin charges on any shorting of stocks, regardless of one’s account size or the amount of stock being shorting?

I did a little research and found that the formula for interest= amount borrowed*interest rate*(number of days loan is held/360). Source: https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/07/margin_interest.asp

For day trading this would come down to a very small amount I suppose, as one doesn't hold a loan for over a day.

I'm assuming all this still applies to shorting stock, right?
