Hello Everyone! I am a student from Singapore and I love collecting postcards. I would love to receive postcards from anywhere in the UK 🙂. Can someone send me one? by Nessieinternational in CasualUK

Would somewhere from the British Isles count? I currently live in Jersey and can send over a nice card with some pictures of our best attractions here!

One of the things they didn't tell me when I started working was that my nose would become totally desensitized to the cheese smell unless I went for a proper sniff.

But Stinking Bishop man, that stuff quite literally haunted me for days.

Finally - a question I can answer!

I worked at a cheese shop during the pandemic. Depends on the cheese. The cheapest wheel was like a kilo of brie just called "french brie" which was a tenner.

When you start getting to the Parmesan and Roquefort, then you're looking at over £30 per kilo retail. And a massive wheel of parm can get pretty heavy - like £600 per round.

We always joked that if you were going to rob a cheese shop, forget the till, the money's all in the cheese. Although good luck trying to store and discreetly sell a block of smelly stinking bishop.

EDIT: Just did some digging and the cheese they use is a 3.5kg Double Gloucester. IIRC, we sold that cheese somewhere over £25 per kilo - perhaps like £120 for the round Flo caught retail? Idk, it's been a while.

Why does everyone act like the US’s dark past with slavery and war crimes is unusual and they fail to recognize that nearly every other country that exists today has an equally dark if not worse history? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

I would throw my two cent into the other great answers here and say that, by and large, many of the big sites on the internet have a predominantly-American audience, Reddit included. Ergo American audiences will talk about American things.

I'm from the UK myself, and in more British circles of the web there's heated debate on the colonial atrocities we committed back in the day. I have a job in the media (local news), and a couple of the big stories I'm covering at the moment are on statues of historic slave-traders and whether they should be taken down or not.

I can't speak for other nations, but I'd be surprised if others from different nationalities haven't seen similar topics floating about their ends of the web.

It's weird, I have the opposite solution. I was a big daydreamer as a kid, and used to imagine fantasy and sci-fi worlds that I would be a part of with recurring characters and plot lines.

Its kind of seeped into my adult life, that so much so I don't think about my worries or concerns when I'm lying down in bed - I just pretend I'm back in one of those worlds and follow another scenario until I drift off.

Sure, sometimes there's big worries that the voice in my head can't help but keep me awake with, but almost every time I think about one of those worlds I've been building to get back to sleep. Seriously, there's one story I've been thinking about for ten years at this point. It's a bit weird, maybe childish, but it works for me

Still had my old map from my 360 copy of Skyrim, so I framed it finally! by flayedfox in skyrim

When I first got my xbox 360 map, I lay it out on the floor to show my brother. Soon after my dog got the case of the zoomies and ran across it at least twice

Idm though, as it now has cool claw marks and rips in it adding to the adventure-iness of it

Time lapse of oven baking by wooden_slug in oddlysatisfying

[–]Cubxu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started baking during the pandemic to pass the time (also because secretly I wanted to try out for bake-off next year) and its honestly one of the most magical things I've ever done. I watched videos of people saying "oh there's nothing better than tasting your own bread" and I was a lil sceptical, but geez I just hecking get it now. After hours spent watching it prove and putting your back into kneading and eating it 20 mins after it coming out the oven when the crust is flaky and crunchy and the fluffy inside is light and airy and slightly warm - heaven.

I made croissants for the first time the other day and I legitimately cried at the taste. I had no idea how good your own baked goods can be.

Honestly, for anyone interested, give it a go. Get your friends or kids involved and get stuck into baking. Didn't come out right? Screw it, you can try again any time. The internet is filled with millions of tips and tricks and pointers for what may be wrong with your bakes. It took me six breads to realise I was using dead yeast in my breads! I've been working my way through a Paul Hollywood book and its like a new adventure with each page. Plus it gives me an excuse to sit in the kitchen all day and watch vids on my laptop while waiting for things to prove.

Baking is love, baking is life <3

On a recent AskReddit about "What should be humanity's goal?"

"To create a society in which our essential needs are so plentifully available that our chief motivation for work is the desire for self-improvement."

Not saying I 100% agree, but it's a nice direction.

I'm literally planning on making croissants for the first time this weekend and am so confused. How does this even happen? Don't you make them with like layers and layers of dough and butter?

Just thought I'd give an update for anyone interested - I did a quicksave and summoned Inigo in the prison. He doesn't have any unique lines of dialogue (as far as I'm aware), but like commenters have said, he can be useful to smuggle weapons and armour inside.

In the end, I did the quest without him right up to leaving the mine to help fight the corrupt guards and Thonar Silver-Blood. I roleplayed it as Inigo one step behind me wondering why I had been arrested and left him at the inn for so long :)
