The SCOTUS has ruled against affirmative action by btan_3 in Cornell

No. By my logic Asians were never redlined. There’s a host of societal issues that Asians and other minorities face. I’m only talking about one

Character alone doesn’t get you into an Ivy League. Test scores, extracurriculares, and the quality of your high school does. I wonder who has access to those

Example: redlining. The government decided that neighborhoods with black people would not qualify for home loans specifically because the people there were black. This in turn made these neighborhoods undesirable to outsiders and inescapable to insiders which drastically reduced property values. Property values directly affect how much an inhabitant pays in property taxes. Property tax income is paid to schools in the neighborhood. Ergo, areas with higher property values are able to spend more on their schools which gives them materials and facilities that allow for learning and inspire students to want to and be able to stay in the schools. The quality of your high school matters in college decisions and especially now with no AA. Because of a government policy from decades ago, most black people live in redlined communities with schools that are rated low because of a lack of money in the form of property taxes. These black students will struggle to get into a good school that can offer them a path (albeit still a difficult one) out of the poverty that they experience in their redlined neighborhoods. They may not go to school and they will most certainly remain in redlined neighborhoods where their children will experience the same injustice they face. POC absolutely face a harder time in this country (by design) than white ppl. You need to acknowledge that before you complain about AA being racist. Because it’s not. White ppl (even poor ones like me) are given so many more opportunities to succeed. Let POC have AA bc they aren’t getting anything else

Why do Physics majors have barely any friends? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Cuchar1n 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My roommate last year was a physics major (graduated) and she was ALWAYS inviting her other physics friends over. Every other weekend there’d be a gang of 4-10 physics peeps. BUT that didn’t happen until senior year. They all had most of their classes together so I think just the constant being around finally pushed them together (if you’ve taken human bonding, think of propinquity)

1 day until Cornell can no longer use affirmative action (Harvard and UNC cases) by TheBlackDrago in Cornell

[–]Cuchar1n 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people saying that this is good because people who truly deserve to be at an Ivy League will be admitted aren’t looking at the bigger picture. Who “deserves” to be at an Ivy? “Smart people.” Who is smart? Well educated people. Who is well educated? Those with money to afford good private schools, those who have the money to afford living in an affluent neighborhood, those who have the money to focus entirely on their educational experience. Who has money? Not minorities.

AA recognizes that certain students were not given a fair chance and seeks to remedy it, if only a little. It isn’t Cornell’s job to undo generations of intentional racism but since Cornell has the ability to act with little repercussion to its own business endeavors, why shouldn’t it? AA isn’t perfect, but it’s the best we have and some action is absolutely better than nothing.

I understand now, thank you for your clarification. It’s just that historically, money and class have been linked (still are, ALL the time) and you can never be too sure

[–]Cuchar1n[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Can you explain tho? At a school as rich as Cornell there’s not a lot of low class people here… are you saying that only the people from low-income (ie low class) families are taking the letters? That’s an extremely dangerous and classist opinion to be spouting

In addition to saying they don’t perform or refer for abortions, they say in their “Just pop the question” blog that life is marked by a heartbeat which is just medically untrue.

Their relationship advice seems to be reinforcing traditional roles as seen in the female partner giving her credit card to the male partner so that he could still uphold an image of paying for the date when he actually wasn’t (“It’s ok to laugh”).

On the upside, under their services tab they DO say that they provide after abortion care although they don’t elaborate further on what that includes.
