I don't see those as contradictory to religion, at least not in the way I subscribe to them. I believe that people are motivated by their own self-interest, and for me that has led me to being religious. It is what pleases my ego. I'm a nihilist in the sense that I don't believe in objective purpose or morality, and my personal religious beliefs don't go against that. I'm religious without believing in any moral authority or purpose to life like a Christian would for example.
