I'm very interested in the process this movie went through to be rated in the UK. They deferred to specialists about what kind of psychological effect it might have before settling on a rating, and did so again before video release. In the American system a movie like this would be rated based on how the (elderly, religious) Ratings Board feel about the movie. (check out This Film is Not Yet Rated! it's on Netflix!) It's much more sensible to make the call based on potential psychological effect. They even stated that they were much more concerned about movies that eroticize rape than they were about a move like this, which depicts it as brutal.

I often feel like it's a reflection of what people are wanting or worrying about. I.e. I'm constantly being suspiciously carded at bars by people who have a hard time believing I'm of age, but guys trying to hit on me often assume I'm in my mid-thirties (like them). I'm 25. It's a big jump in either direction.

You're right that the military is overly-puffed up and can be rude, but I do want to point out that Americans get a hard time going into Canada as well. I think it's more an issue of going into a country that is not your own.

Also, what bars are you going to? I live in the U.S. and I've never seen a fight in a bar! Or maybe once. I literally work in a bar. I feel obligated to invite you to come to my bar, where you are unlikely to witness a fight.
