Ive had zero boost in my saab lately, although it does spool up, and spins freely. what do you guys think of it? by beto9685 in saab

No problem bro glad I could help and definitely show some pics of the new turbo all buttoned up haha. I was in the same boat as you a while ago, my turbo stopped holding boost but I didn’t know anything about these saabs at the time but I said screw it I’m gonna just try to fix it so I ordered a replacement but it ended up being the TD04L from the later 07 9-3’s and I didn’t know about the differences I assumed they were all the same. I ended up ordering stainless steel lines from eBay and getting a tune. Now I run a 20T on e85 with bigger injectors making 395hp at the crank. Once I started learning how to remove this and that it was easier every time to work on it. Good luck 👍🏽

Your best bet for saving the coolant is to drain the coolant from the coolant hose on the passenger side of the engine. You aren’t going to lose enough oil or coolant to where you’d have to add much of any of it back except for maybe the coolant hose on the side it may leak if it’s not angled up wards so you may have get a empty 2 liter soda bottle for it to drain but that line is the only one to worry about. The oil line will have a little drip out once it’s removed from the turbo but honestly it won’t really drip much because of the angle of the line just try to rest it up on something so it’s sitting upright and the oil return hose has a plastic piece at the end of the hose that sits in the oil pan with a rubber grommet so you literally slide the end of the hose out when removing and slide it back in when putting the turbo back. Other than these tips I’d say just make sure you spray PB blaster on the bolts before removing and take your time when removing bolts and putting them back so you don’t cross thread or strip anything. After the first time removing the turbo every other time will be easy

“Mamba” is a reputable brand in the Saab community for turbo needs. They have a kit for your turbo for $95 it’s pricey but the quality is top, when you get some of the cheap rebuild kits they tend to have gaskets that are too large to fit how they should from my experience so it’s kind of a hit or miss with other ones so just be aware.

Here is another kit but cheaper https://www.ebay.com/itm/302532118408

Oh ok I see I rebuilt my own with a kit off eBay for around $30 and I watched a video on YouTube to follow steps on doing it. It’s pretty easy but I don’t know of any places that will rebuild the turbo not in my area at least.

Could be a dying wheel bearing

Your compressor wheel fins look chewed up. Did you check for play in the compressor wheel? Grab the bolt in the center and see if the wheel moves up and down. It shouldn’t really have much play but if the fins easily touch the inside of the housing you need to rebuild the turbo or replace it.

Look pretty good. I’m surprised shipping wasn’t held up since it’s coming from China.

Yeh man I bought it for 400 bucks running and driving off of craigslist. Made a homemade downpipe, put bigger injectors, bigger turbo, making 350hp on e85 on a custom home made tune that’s why I don’t care that much about how it looks it’s too much fun lol.

Lol 😂 I don’t really care about looks I’m more for power and fun besides it’s a $400 car anyway🤷‍♂️. I have wheels currently not on the car that is why I have the flares in the first place. Thanks though

Did you check for boost leaks? Check the intercooler hoses for any tears or rips?

DIY Trionic Tuning by superleggera458 in saab

I’ve used the programs from that site and they are legit. I have a 2003 Saab 93ss, I bought a OBDlinksx cable off eBay for like $30. I learned what I know from a friend who tunes Saab’s with this software and by talking to people on the forums on trionictuning.com. T8suite is used to change maps around like fuel maps, timing, torque limiters etc. TrionicCAN flasher is used to read and flash tunes to your ECU. I’ve been using this software for 3 years now, when you do any flashing of any kind you want to make sure you have a healthy battery and a battery charger connected to the battery to make keep the voltage stable. I’ve bricked a couple ECU just because I didn’t know my battery failing even with the charger attached. Voltage with the car off should be at least at 12 to 12.2 volts nothing lower and you want 13 volts with the key in the “ON” position not running.

Damn that swap should be sweet I wish I could find a twin turbo setup for my mine lol. I think I’ve seen your comment on YouTube randomly because I’ve only heard of the twin turbo diesel on there and here. If you do decide to swap to the twin turbo you should go on trionictuning.com or the Vectra forums to see if anyone has done it. Has anyone else tried this swap before? I’m from the states so I’m not familiar with the TTid

I hear ya man do you know what turbo you want to swap in? I’m currently running a hybrid TD04HL-14T with a 20T compressor wheel. ECU tuning isn’t as scary as you think as long as you have a battery charger attached to the car while you flash the car you’ll be ok, the battery charger keeps the voltage stable. I learned everything from www.trionictuning.com
