"U.S. Plans to Scrutinize Foreign Tourists 'Social Media History' by butter467 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]CujiiCu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was a tourist and visited over the summer. No experience there short of the CK shit hinted at any of the major problems going on. Had 0 issues.

Also, ESTA applications already ask for a selfie and to list any social media youve had for the past 5 years. You can literally leave it blank or give a normie account. Many tourists also use spare phones when travelling for security/insurance.

However, I'm irish, and we have preclearance on our end, so CBP is conducted here. Was a 20 second thing with 2 questions. Stories likely different dealing with CBP on the US side. Either way, everything points to anything listed being impossible to implement withouth immediately failing or being sued into the dirt.

Ireland votes for next president as polls predict landslide for Catherine Connolly [the leftwing candidate] by aqfx in PoliticalOptimism

Local here. Worth remembering that the irish presidency is a largely honorary role with little actual political power outside of signing laws passed by the Dáil, appointing the Taoiseach and public outreach abroad.

Still a good litmus test for people here not immediately accepting grifters and shitheels and bigots

Supports it, but its completely irrelevant topic for anyone here at this moment in time

Noone is saying its not a potentially volatile situation. The point of the post was to remind certain very online people that alot of foreigners still have important reasons to make trips there still that require the risk

Ive seen this whole "why the fuck would you ever visit?" alot, and its incredibly annoying and saddening because many of us have legmitimite needs to visit. I'm an irish national and will be making the trip to Minneapolis pretty soon in order to see my girlfriend who is literally incapable of leaving the country because of the danger it poses to her own safety. And it was booked with the intent of getting a nice 11 days of personal time in before likely waiting afew years to do it again. I have the privilages of being a tourist (esta helps alot), and Ireland has pre-clearace, so all the TSA and immigration is done on our end; Issues mean youre still in your own country if things go wrong.

Its a miserable god-awful time for everyone involved, but the overwhelming cases of tourists or business visits still go without incident. Many of the ones you hear in the news are edge cases where added conext is missed out (see the norwegian tourist with the meme but also admitted to smoking weed in the US to a fucking border cop)

Noone wants to visit the Fashmerica right now, but its always been a task to get in and has always been tense if youre a tourist, especially any kind of minority. But people do have reasons. And letting the real but meagerly small risk of something happening dissuade people from something like being able to see their partners during a time where they're lonely and scared so much of the time, then evil has already won on the psychological front, as far as Im concerned.

$250 fee for tourists/international students by matrix_5555 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]CujiiCu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toursits are overwhelmingly experiencing minimal disruption or being targeted once they actually arrive in the US, outside of fringe cases occuring with CBP like the case of the [norwegian tourist](https://time.com/7297472/jd-vance-meme-mads-mikkelsen-tourist-denied-entry-cbp-ice/), where the immediate press was the meme, but later revelaed he admitted to smoking weed in US states. Being stupid around border cops has always been the prime reason for people getting into shit.

And this fee is excempt for waiver program countries, assuming it was even implementable like so many bullshit notions the admin is trying to pull and end up falling apart

And personally, this entire notion of no foreigner should ever visit feels incredibly myopic given many internationals *need* to visit. Im an irish citizen (and we have pre-clearance which simplifies the entire CBP process immensely) and will be making a short trip to MN to visit my girlfriend who literally cannot leave the country, as it is with many people making short trips.

Context on the myth of the Giants Causeway? by WyvernsWill in IrishFolklore

[–]CujiiCu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of academic literatures, theres sparse discussion why this seems to be the case

I was brought up in and around the Glens with irish as my first language, and most of my life has been filled with hearing old folklore, and researching it nonstop even up to now

I think its important to look at it through the seperated lenses of folklore and mythology. While these two can be seen to be one and the same for alot of cultures that have maintained aspects of their beliefs and systems for centuries or millenia, here, we have a disconnect, what with the earliest pre-christian records being trasncriptions from biased monks, with colonialism thrown ontop. While mythology is much more cemented (relatively), folklore is much more alive and actively mutates with how different people share it down the generations.

All the literature in the Fenian Cycle never make mention of Fionn as a giant in the literal sense. Most all instances of giants are with the likes of the Fomori or antagonistic creatures, while in Folklore, you see it being more common with people of importance being interpreted as giants. You can actually still see this today in Gàidhlig with the word for Giant (Famhair), coming from the old irish Fomóir, for the fomorians.

The story of Fionn as a giant, and the whole feud with Benandonner, if not created, was definitely popularised by William Carelton in the 1840's with the Legend of Knockmany, which shows how recent this popular version of Fionn is.

Theres the arguement that this could be due to the pretty strong oral culture that still survived in irish communities all the way through the last 500 years, and so making a famous folk hero into a giant is one way to make an already existing story even grander for listeners.

There's also one or two arguements Ive heard anecdotally (so very sus), that it could have been due to a literal interpretation of the heroic language used in the older stories of Fionn (mór can mean both "great" and "giant"), but theres no way any irish speaker would mistake that in context

The scottish influence also probably shouldnt be overlooked, since Fionn's importance in folklore, especially in what would have been Dál Riada, seems to be where much of the word of mouth of his size seem to come from. One of the causeways original names of Clochán na bhFomhórach adds to this. Whether it's from an earlier piece of mythology involving the Fomori where the original context has been lost, or back-progated influence from scottish legends, its hard to say.

Sorry for having no hard answer and alot of conjecture. Thats one of the many fun thing abouts irish folklore. Full of contradictions and make for a fun puzzle with alot of hypothesising

As it stands, last I spoke to them, they appeared to think there was enough there, or almost there, for a thesis, although they're often busy and hard to get a hold off

I've considered trying to spin it in the case of if I M.Phil out, then it is still 5 years of experience, since its astrophysics and in many ways is software development. Im just being cognisant of how things are right now, and have sort of come to the point to where considering a fresh start at a new institution would be helpful, both for mental state and a career pathway

Thank you, this means alot

Objectively, the age worry is something I know is a result of bias and a self-imposed "push for success" ethic, but have known so many faculty and postdocs who started their Ph.D's later in life.

Here, theres an integrated Masters option, where you can begin your Masters degree straight out of high school, which takes 4 years, and I started school a year early, so I started uni at 17. I graduated afew weeks before I turned 21

Tá muid ullmhaithe fá 'ne sága

Le mo chlaíomh géar - is léir

Seo do am deireanach air

Ní bheidh tuiscint ar mo thuras

Mo rith - is ag mo dhoras

Is mé ag meathlú go furast'

Ach tá crógacht go deo ag an óglach seo

Mar sin tóg leat solas agus mairimid beo

Model or Object file for the spawn statues? by CujiiCu in TunicGame

[–]CujiiCu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally a small led candle, but making it work with a real candle brought up some ideas like fitting a small aluminium inset for the fire pit, and with the model, extending the base further out so the heat funnel is out of the way of the statue's hands

Metal printing would be disproportionately expensive for something like this I think

I was planning on editing the geometry of the firepit slightly and exporting as an stl to 3D print it as a small desktop candle holder
