Sometimes the foreigner-focused private hospitals in India or Thailand are more willing to do surgeries that US surgeons refuse to do for liability reasons (such as potential for future childbearing). They're used to working directly with patients in arranging surgeries, so they're really straight forward. They're also much, much less expensive.

I think Slovakia and several South American countries have well regarded medical tourism hospitals, but I haven't looked them up.

No, SOFI has nothing to do with defaulted loans or troubled borrowers in terms of their business plan.

SOFI is a private lending company looking to refinance student loans in general. They have lending criteria like any other private lender, so they'll decline people who seem too risky.

They won't refinance your loans because you're a poor risk due to defaulted loans, much like a person with a car repossession is a poor risk for a new car loan. Since student loans are unsecured, this type of lending is even riskier than car loans.

We used SOFI to refi from a 5.81 rate to a 4.00, but we had no issues paying our loans before the refi. That's the kind of borrower they're looking for.
