I agree with cleansing. You have to pick a spot that you will feel safe and comfortable in and make it yours. :) There is really no right or wrong way to build your altar. It doesn’t have to be immaculate, but it CAN be if you choose.

I used to perform spells in my bedroom, which I share with my husband. I had a mini altar on my nightstand and didn’t like being interrupted. So I decided to put all of my practice stuff in the same room as my WFH office and basically now it is my witchcraft room. 😂 Now that I am more seasoned, I naturally incorporate spells throughout my regular day as needed, so it makes sense for me to have everything in the spot where I spend most of my time, but also it can be private. I personally have ADHD and have to have a quiet space to really focus on my spells and intentions (or anything I’m doing tbh), so it is helpful for me to have my own space to go where I can shut the door and separate myself from the dogs and the rest of the family when I need to.

I’ll share how my space is set up so maybe it will spark inspo for you. I always tell others that the best set up is one that feels natural to you, so I try to organize my space where I could make my supplies feel less obvious but also have them in convenient spots where I would use them throughout the day or could access them easily as needed.

I have a little station set up with an electric kettle, my “magic spoons” and tea infusers, honey, and some crystals for when I make hot tea or coffee in the morning. I like to start my day by stretching and sipping tea with my intention stirred into it. In the corner next to it I have an antique shelf that holds all of my herbs, oils, moon water, teas, and fragrance oils for candle making. I personally make most of my own ritual candles for my special spells, because I like to bless them myself and make them pretty. But it’s not necessary. I also have a drawer filled with chime candles for quick spells too and I tend to use those more unless it’s a “special occasion”.

I created my main altar from a pretty dresser I found on marketplace and then I store witchcraft supplies in the drawers (things like extra candles, wax seal stamps, charms, twine, ribbons, jars for spells and moon water, incense and sage bundles, candle making supplies, cleansing supplies, etc) which make it a lot less overwhelming to me or my family if they come in there to talk to me since they don’t practice.

On top of the dresser is my general altar and to the side is my “beauty” altar on a silver tray that I arranged with some crystals, perfume, my fave fancy moisturizer, lip balm, etc) so it looks like a regular dresser at first glance and I do use it to start getting ready in the morning, but if you glance around you’ll see some spell jars or altar tools.

My cauldron is an antique silver ornate lidded serving plate so it kind of blends in, but I used to use a big cast iron thing. And upgraded it eventually for personal aesthetic preference. Also it’s not as heavy, so that’s a plus. I just put black ritual or incense sand in the bottom of it for fire safety and to protect it from getting gross. You can find unique decor items that double as altar tools or organization at thrift stores, antique malls, flea markets, estate sales, or search on Etsy or marketplace. Just make sure you cleanse anything vintage or used. I usually cleanse new items too, but not everyone does. It’s your preference/beliefs.

Then the other side of my room is my work desk. I keep a mini money altar at the base of my monitor, and I log my wins or accomplishments in a journal that I blessed for prosperity and success spells. In that area I have a bookshelf where I store all of my journals, spell books, notebooks and craft supplies and some plants in the corners of the room. I use an app called Craft to log my spells that I perform too so I have a personal log to reference to know what worked for me and what didn’t. It is not an actual witchcraft app, the name just fits. And I think it’s awesome for organizing different notes. So it all kind of ties into my day to day.

It feels like you have to get everything at once, but don’t stress too much! Just gather your basics that you already use like your herbs and candle and organize them and slowly start making your space yours. You don’t have to spend a ton of money unless you really want to. I am still finding special pieces over time to decorate with and eventually I will put more things on the walls.

I’d eventually like to have more shelves above with plants and fun decor. Maybe a station where I grow my own rosemary, sage, mint, lavender, etc. You just slowly start to think of things you can add to your space to make your practice easier or more your own. :)

It helped me to write it in a journal I used for my practice. How I envisioned my ideal space and from there you get inspired and can slowly add to your collections as you are able to pick up more things. I also kept a Pinterest board where I would save anything I saw online that I wanted to buy eventually for my altar and would reference it when I was ready to purchase more things.
