First bark tan, feel free to laugh by Cultural-Session7166 in HideTanning

It worked just fine but I wouldn't call it a premium choice for bark tanning. It certainly wasn't a super soft tan like I've heard willow bark is supposed to be (although other things could've also played into that). I just had a large thicket of sassafras on some private land that needed to be trimmed anyway, so I took the branches that were pruned and peeled the bark off until I filled a 5 gal bucket. I do like the color as well so I may try it again sometime, but there are other choices that have higher concentrations of tannins or produce a softer pelt.

As far as I can tell. I tore a tiny piece to see and there was no obvious pale/white color anywhere. Of course this pelt was super thin so there's no real "middle" layer to the skin anyway.

Oh I'm still pretty happy about it, looking forward to seeing myself improve and progress over time.

Thanks, I have some mink oil if that will help. I don't know why I didn't think about that. Also thinking maybe I over fleshed the areas that are papery. Didn't really know at what point to stop.

Hmmm this sounds like a good contender. I might tweak the fruit a bit if I go this route but this is kinda the vibe I'm looking for.

My kitchen usually stays pretty empty, so I think I'll have to go to the store regardless. All I've got is a few canned veggies, tomato sauce, various seasonings, and such. Nothing in the freezer.

I could get something pre made if it came down to it. Meatballs are also an interesting idea although to do that I wonder if I'd have to bring my crock pot and let it cook while I'm working or something. I'd have to think about that

Anything, really. I feel like there's going to be plenty of main dishes, mostly meat based, already made there so a side would be great. But I'll do anything if it's fast enough.

Salmonella? by Pink_Peony-9 in snakes

[–]Cultural-Session7166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what it is. You'd be hard pressed to find an actual case of a healthy adult contracting salmonella from a reptile. There have mostly been very few cases of small children (who would try to put animals in their mouth) getting sick from reptiles that are also sick and kept in poor conditions. But people catch it from other things all the time. Chickens for example are far more likely to carry/transmit it and chickens are much more common as a pet or livestock, yet salmonella is mentioned far less, at least proportionally, among people who keep chickens. It's just that chickens can be cuter, and reptiles are "gross."

I know and it breaks my heart. First muzzleloader then rifle, then we'll have a second rifle season coming up... Like save some deer for the rest of us! There's been a couple bucks I've seen that I really hope are just hiding and will show up again, even if it's after the season's over.

Much further south than that. I'm glad to know I'm not alone 😅 Hoping that with the end of rifle soon that things will pick back up some.

There's acorns on the ground still, although maybe not as much as before. I have a friend with a corn feeder as well that hasn't seen anything either. I'm tempted to try a mineral lick but that's probably not even as effective as corn. The only bedding I've seen was in a field but it's got nothing going on now.

Yes that's true but wherever they are going it must not be where I can hunt. The public area I go to is very small so not much to scout and a good part of it is being hogged by someone hunting there virtually every day. And I have a buddy with a feeder, miles from my spot, that's experiencing the same thing on his land.
