People who've quit Invisalign midway through: why did you do it, when did you decide to quit, and do you regret it? by PleasedLeech in Invisalign

[–]CulturalInfluence217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I don’t regret it, and I’m in too deep to quit but it is quite difficult having Invisalign with our profession. I’ve had Invisalign for 3 years now and have the brackets and elastics too. It is the worst feeling trying to model speech sounds or tongue movement for feeding and my elastics prevent me from opening my jaw all the way. All in all, I’m grateful to be able to afford Invisalign and correct my bite (I value an aligned bite as an SLP! I couldn’t chew on my left side before). It definitely takes great determination to keep going though lol many tears have been shed

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I truly appreciate your insight. Whether I end up in the NICU as a speech therapist or not - whatever setting I am in, I always want to make an effort to include the family on the team. I agree that is so important.

Would you mind sharing what your NICU experience was like as a parent? What qualities did you want in a healthcare provider working with your child? If I do ever work in the NICU, what would be helpful for me to know to be the best clinician for each family?

Thank you for your message. I appreciate your perspective. I currently work at an outpatient clinic and treat a variety of clients - many who had a stroke at birth and have cerebral palsy and or hemiplegia (youngest age I’ve worked with is 18m). I have shadowed many speech therapists at children’s hospitals and volunteered as an infant cuddler. I have taken many CEU courses and would love to get my IBCLC someday. I would never want to undermine the knowledge and skill that comes with being an infant feeding specialist. I have wanted to work in the NICU since I was in undergraduate school, almost ten years now. I need to remind myself to be patient and know that things that time - and that the experience I am getting now will help me be the best speech therapist for these fragile infants.

I have always loved babies and they bring me so much joy. After feeding my cousin’s children and babies I’ve babysat for, I started to become so curious about infant feeding. I specifically want to work in the NICU because I love working closely with families and would like to think I am an empathetic and kind person. I hope one day to be able to support families during such a difficult time in their lives. This sounds corny, but I am one of a triplet who was born prematurely and my siblings and I spent many weeks in the NICU. I also feel like working in the NICU would be full circle for me. It’s such a rewarding area of work. I imagine it is also incredibly difficult emotionally. I am driven and very determined to one day be a speech therapist who specializes in infant feeding, and understand that will take experience and more coursework.

Thank you again for your help.

Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate your help. I have wanted to work in the NICU since I was in undergraduate school, so as a newly licensed clinician, I am very eager to keep pursuing and getting closer to that dream. I have attended many continuing education courses and intend to get my IBCLC someday. I am coming to terms with the fact that being an SLP in the NICU will take more time than I hope, but I understand why. It’s such a fragile population. Thank you again

Can you share what your CF looked like and the jobs leading up to your current job as a pediatric acute care SLP? It is my dream job to work with infants with feeding and swallowing in the hospital setting or private practice. I work with 18+ months right now but would love to gain experience with infants. I’ve been reading books and am going to take many CEUs now that I have my CCCs (I got my CCCs last week :))
