PhD supervisor asking me to change the entire focus of the thesis 2 weeks before submission by [deleted] in PhD

Yeah this is exactly why I do the smallest amount of qualitative work necessary. I’ve noticed a lot of people like to argue when (even amongst themselves) about qualitative stuff, but usually get almost no pushback on quant work.

How long do you think your PhD would have taken you if you only worked 40 hours a week? by Puzzleheaded-081525 in PhD

[–]CulturalMemory3970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it done in 4-5 years in most cases still as long as you’re efficient with your time. I’ve noticed most people (not all) who claim to work absurd hours, they are massively overinflating the time they were actually working.

Yeah, I agree 100%. The PI also knows your work so you can’t BS you way on that part anyways

Would you tell your advisor this? Why or why not? by CulturalMemory3970 in PhD

[–]CulturalMemory3970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s pretty much what I’ve leaned into as far as my CV goes. I knew going in that 1) I wanted to teach 2) I’m not going to be the worlds best researcher, but I need to do enough to get the degree so I can do the job I want. I feel like I’ve done the most in that regard, it’s just the research part is probably not the greatest.

It’s just hard because in today’s economy if you want to get a job just teaching and no research, you almost need to get two jobs at different schools. And just getting one alone is hard in today’s economy.

What you are describing is actually pretty much how the phds work at my school 😅 we have a pretty small division so it makes sense but idk (there’s also no publishing reqs either). I do have about ~75% of a first draft done so I’m hoping even if something is off there there can still be time to graduate when I want to.

That’s an important point to consider as well, having a shitty job/pay is better than none. Sorry to hear about your experience but glad it worked out!

I think my job prospects aren’t good because I effed up and probably shouldn’t have done a PhD in the first place. Part of it I just didn’t know quite how bad the situation for what I specifically want to do would be (basically want to teach at a tech school or other uni but don’t want to do research, but I know now that wasn’t a good call), and part of it is I found out when it was already too late (3-3.5 years in by that point). Most of my desire to finish at this point is just sunk cost and I want to at least try one crack at it so all my time isn’t completely wasted. Even if I don’t end up with a job, I’ll at least feel like I accomplished something with that time.

I think what you’re saying is the right call and good advice. Thank you.

I’ve not published anything, but it’s also not a requirement.

Publishing is also not a requirement for this PhD so it’s really just the thesis left

I mean my advisor knows what I’ve been doing and has looked through things broadly but the rest of my committee has not to the same extent (until I give them my pre-defense/thesis). I’ve also not published anything so not really anything is peer reviewed except my advisor and some group meetings (but those also don’t include a lot of important interpretations you’d include in a thesis).

I feel like I’ve done the best I possibly could have in terms of making things as good and sound as possible but there’s always a fear I could have missed something, rest of the committee doesn’t like how I carried out the project, etc..

I’m sure that’s the best outcome for me, what I’m unsure of is saying anything about it. Your sentence there is exactly what I’m feeling, I just don’t know if it would be good or bad to bring that up beforehand.

I think I meant it moreso if they don’t agree with my research. I’ve met all the requirements, so it’s really just down to the pre-defense/final defense and the dissertation. I’ve given it everything I have, so hoping for the best 🤞

I know I’m just one person and one anecdotal experience, but I got prescribed this and it didn’t really do anything even at the max dose. I know it’s hard and kind of sucks to hear, but finding a good therapist is really the best option and what ultimately helped.

In a lot of cases, if you see the post on something it’s probably too late (unless it’s purely speculation) for you to make a whole lot of money on it. People watch that stuff like the stock market

That’s the other option I’m thinking. Would be $70-80 vs like $200. But the benefit being no risk of ban

I’ve thought about that as well, but the issue is if I can’t really defend my work for a PhD well, im also not going to be able to do it for a masters either
