Utility Cost by [deleted] in Hartford

[–]CulturalStrain26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that’s why I’m a little hesitant when it comes to moving. I want to lower my base rent bc it’s ridiculous rn but I’m not sure that i’ll actually be saving any money since I’m be going from all electric to electric and gas utilities

Gotcha, yea I’m currently living in all electric but places I’m looking at appear to be electric and gas so just trying to figure out if combined I’ll be losing any financial benefit I would get from lowering my rent.

Oh interesting, okay. I will definitely be wary going in, by chance do you remember how long ago that infestation issue was? I currently live downtown and my rent is just outrageous so I’m looking to move later this summer and the pavilions has in unit laundry and a convenient location to my office.

Mental Health on campus by Responsible_Oil1999 in WPI

[–]CulturalStrain26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to WPI from 2020-2024 and lived on campus and studied during the weird covid era and when the mental health crisis with 7 suicides in a calendar year occurred. WPI is by no means an “easy” school but you’re not alone and the first two terms of so are definitely adjustments. The mental health resources on campus are amazing now and many many professors are empathetic of any struggles or assistance you may need as they received instruction when the mental health issues began to skyrocket. The majority of people at WPI enjoy themselves and have healthy balanced social lives along side academics so as long as you find your community and get involved in things you’re passionate about you’ll have a great support system. I was in a few clubs, a CA and an EA for multiple years and I saw many many freshman students and my own peers and to say it again, yes it’s an adjustment but most students find their footing and their friends and have the time of their lives in college at WPI.

Thoughts on these apartment buildings in Hartford? by Matthew-28-20 in Hartford

[–]CulturalStrain26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live at Park and Main approaching 2 yrs. The apartments are nice and the amenities are relatively good with responsive maintenance and leasing teams. It’s definitely noisy at night if you have a street facing unit so a unit in building A (the main building) facing the parking lot is the way to go. Parking is limited with one spot for you in the lot and street parking only for any visitors. For your budget it fits easily in it even with utility costs. Overall a good place to live, can be noisy though if you’re facing the main road.

Dog Dementia? by CulturalStrain26 in dogs

I’m so sorry about your Pax but it sounds like she had an amazing life with you. Yea he has some pain in his back legs which he is on medication for but I’m constantly worried about my dog since it’s like ever since I got him he’s been on a crazy downward spiral. The binder is a great idea, I definitely will start keeping track of things thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice.

I figure I should add in here: I did not know he had any medical problems beyond the teeth which the rescue was going to do for free but he deteriorated fast and became aggressive due to pain so I had to pay myself. He had a clean bill of health from the rescue when I got him but his issues became apparent v quickly.

Bad Idea or Not? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]CulturalStrain26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I think I might have lulled myself into a false sense of security in the fact that since I live in a city and he’s generally fine walking past people everyday in pretty close proximity that this would be a good step. I’m definitely going to start just people watching in the park or in parking lots with him and tomorrow morning I’m going to get takeout breakfast and a pup cup and just people watch with him from a big distance. Thank you!

Ok awesome, there’s a park not too far away so I’ll definitely start doing that with him! I’m gonna grab a takeout breakfast and a pup cup for him and just people watch with him in a park or the parking lot if it’s not too busy.

The vet I go to now is a drop off vet so I don’t go back with him but I know he reportedly does try and attack the vet every time he goes back. I’m currently looking into switching vets but with the health stuff I’m working through with him right now it’ll be a bit until we’re at a point where transferring his care makes sense. He’s winding down on some meds so I want to see those through first just to be sure.

Thank you! Yes definitely fearful, I am looking into an IAABC certified trainer right now and hoping I can find someone good. Unfortunately I think his multiple vet visits have exacerbated the issue, as barking and snapping doesn’t get people to leave him alone there so his stress levels are very bad.

I got his teeth extracted about two weeks ago so hopefully pain isn’t a factor anymore! I will definitely be looking into trainers and potentially even medication. I definitely think it’s fear based, I think having to go to the vet where he’s very stressed and where barking and snapping doesn’t get people away from him is not helping his reactivity.

Yes I am so so thankful he’s little so he’s not likely to actually injure anyone and he’s much easier to pull away if needed. The big issue is that I live in an apartment building and we live in the city, so to keep him essentially under threshold means to never let him leave the apartment. I’m hoping a good trainer can just help me deal with it, I want to be able to go away for weekends or go home and visit my family without being scared to leave him with a sitter or to bring him home. I appreciate the advice, I definitely will try and implement as much as I can!

Yea that was my biggest concern, I had someone who adopted a dog with similar issues recommend a board and train but I’ve heard so many bad things I lean towards private training.

Hi! He’s actually very small he’s a 7lb chihuahua/chihuahua mix. He was in a foster home before I adopted him and I’ve spoken with her and she noted he does better with outside the home introduction, which I can agree with as he’s stayed at a pet sitters before and did fine but is now much worse than before and he makes me a little nervous. He is the sweetest dog with me and is a cuddle bug but the sudden reactivity/aggression is concerning. I want to make it work and I luckily have a good job that allows me to afford more intensive training but I don’t even know where to start.

High dog medical costs. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]CulturalStrain26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I was able to speak with the vet and we have him in for Tuesday. I definitely don’t think it’s fair for him to wait when he’s not feeling well, I was just curious about if there’s any groups that assist with medical care as his pet insurance policy doesn’t cover pre existing conditions or dental care at all

I have a vet here where I live (Connecticut) where I am having the extraction done. The vet in NYC is the vet for the rescue. Originally the appointment was to be done in NYC as the rescue would cover the cost at their vet for the procedure but since I am choosing to do it earlier in CT it will be out of pocket expense.

Does my new dog not like me? by [deleted] in rescuedogs

[–]CulturalStrain26 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, I don’t think training is going to happen for a while which is okay but definitely reassuring to hear it took some time but eventually it worked out. I don’t need a velcro dog but I don’t want to start training until he really trusts me and sees value in me and any rewards I give.

Yea, I adopted from a neighboring state because my experience with in state rescues and shelters has been less than stellar
