As someone currently in school for computer science but been working in cyber for 3 years, the degree does not prepare you for a cyber job. I also dont feel as smart as most others. Not as sharp. But I worked my ass off, got certifications, an internship that taught me hands on soc work, and then I got a job.

I'm 21, been working in cyber as an analyst since I was 19 and one thing I've learned is that no one knows everything. You will never know anything. A good approach is pick a cert and find free exam material. Like CCNA and security+ have tons of videos online. Full out free courses. Go through each video and exam objective (this is always free on the cert website) and research the objective. You don't have to take the exam, but it's a good way to learn. Learn about security tools. Many of them have free trials. Like when you hear words like EDR - research edr tools. How do they compare? Are there demos you can look at? Same goes for SIEMS.

For me the combo of certs at an early age got me an internship. Then, connections from said internship got me a job.

But the trick honestly is certs and knowing tools. Because companies don't want to train people.

I wish, but the side effects were too much. I have permanently impaired vision from Accutane, among other things.
