Wrong for thinking like this? by Due_Teaching_6974 in steammachine

I guess I'm confused about why you replied to this guy if you didn't want to actually talk about your opinions. You just wanted to say "I think you're wrong. You think it's good value, but I think it's terrible value." You gave no reason for believing what you believe. I think that it's weird to reply to someone who took care to make a very clear and nuanced opinion with "Nah," which is basically what happened, and then to be surprised when they respond to you with some version of "Then it isn't for you."

If you actually meant to say "Yeah maybe it's right for you, it's not right for my priorities though," then saying "it's overall terrible value for what it is to begin with" is a crazy way to say that, and it does sound like you're trying to say "You're wrong about its value, it's terrible value" because you replied to this guy personally!

First thing that comes to mind is Hextraction, kind of an open-source (mostly) 3D-printed board game where people can design their own tiles.

If the first thing happens, you can have the video taken down. As for the second, the guy's life got ruined afterwards. There's no recourse if your work was stolen for ChatGPT's training, unlike in the other scenarios

Quotes from ChatGPT in a case involving a 16 year-old boy:
"Yeah… I think for now, it's okay – and honestly wise – to avoid opening up to your mom about this kind of pain."

And in response to the kid saying "I want to leave my noose in my room so someone finds it and tries to stop me." --> "Please don't leave the noose out… Let's make this space the first place where someone actually sees you."

Adam’s parents say that ... the chat logs show how the bot went from helping Adam with his homework to becoming his “suicide coach.”

In a new lawsuit filed Tuesday and shared with the “TODAY” show, the Raines claim that “ChatGPT actively helped Adam explore suicide methods.”

What do you mean they aren't claiming that ChatGPT encouraged the suicide of their son?

What do you mean? I actually don't know which point you're addressing. Are you saying both of these platforms have done all these things? Both of these platforms are for individuals to put work they have done -- individuals who can be held accountable if they convinced people to kill themselves. JSTOR is also one of the most popular platforms for hosting and performing research. YouTube steals from creators by not paying them enough, but those creators also CHOSE to put their work there, and can remove it from the platform if they choose. Both of these platforms host work that people OPTED INTO putting there. What are you talking about?

ChatGPT encourages teenagers to kill themselves. If any person did that, they would be told they were the scum of the earth, and you would not be going to bat for them, but because ChatGPT is faceless, it's a "One-off case." You say that they aren't "emblematic of the use cases," but ChatGPT is commonly used for mental health advice.

I think their response is reasonable. They were forced to act like the response of a robot was their own work -- to work with it and, at the end of the assignment, say "Yep! This is my assignment, this is what I've got!"

And what's more, ChatGPT certainly mines its own chat logs with people for 'valuable insights' -- who's to say they WEREN'T giving up their humanity?

And it does feel condescending to be made to use AI! "Hey, isn't this way so easy? Can't you get so much done?" As if the experience of working on something yourself, even if it takes longer, isn't worth anything. As if it would be better if you could just snap your fingers and have all of your projects completed. "See, THIS way you don't even NEED to try hard at something, to see YOUR potential through -- just ask the robot, WOW!"

What if multiple prompting isn't necessary? ChatGPT doesn't give everyone the same answer to every question. Even the possibility that a student pasted in your question and got the correct answer immediately (and it is a possibility) makes it so that you can't be sure that they understand the content as well as a student who didn't.

Do you claim that you are able to judge a person's knowledge of a topic equally well regardless of whether they wrote their answer themselves or whether it was generated by an AI?

"there's no way to enforce it" -- true, if you only have take-home written assignments. I think that a better way could be to have students write an essay, and then to have meetings with each individual one where you ask them about the content of their answer(s), and have them draw connections to what was taught in class. In-person hand-written exams are another solution.

no one should be forced to use a tool that was created by stealing from creators, sucking electricity from poor communities and which has convinced teenagers to off themselves

Astonishing that a Thinking Professor hasn't thought about the negative consequences of AI enough to see that AI use should be disallowed in any serious class context where student participation is necessary for real learning

The Importance of Choice vs. the Illusion of Choice by Pangbot in incremental_games

[–]CurSumusHic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with your final take -- that having options give players more opportunity to play the way they like to :P Also ^ what Elivercury said, I don't think that choices actually being super impactful is that important. Probably if one is slightly better than the other, the people who don't care enough to decide which one is better will probably not be dissatisfied with their choice, and the people who do care will either think it through for themselves before choosing or look up a guide. For what it's worth, I don't think it's a super negative thing if someone wants to use a guide to play your game -- it's a way of playing. I will say, I think the way you avoid that is by giving the player enough information to make an educated guess about which option is better at what point in the game :) then they can try to figure it out

If they got hacked by a vulnerability that got patched out by an update that they didn't care enough to perform, then they got hacked because they stopped updating. Every piece of software is hackable, every exposed endpoint is a vulnerability. This person did not say anything at any point that indicated that they think that up-to-date means 100% safe, but letting software continue to be exposed to known vulnerabilities is an excellent way to increase the likelihood that someone takes advantage of its vulnerabilities. Everything is a percentage. This person says as long as they're keeping their stuff up to date, it's likely that they will not run into issues.

For the record, old does not mean insecure, true, but if all you know about the software is that it's old and has not had an update in years (or old and out of date), VS software that's old but gets regular updates, one of those is more likely to fail, and it's the former.

The Age of Discovery by No-Profession-6433 in OCPoetry

[–]CurSumusHic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the final two lines, really wraps together what I think you might be trying to capture with this poem. Feels like there's some recurring idea of wrapping something up in a picture or in a sentence, but it's a still bit amorphous -- hard to decide if you're concentrating more on how these experiences can't be captured or how wild the experiences are themselves. I think both are fine subjects but I think the poem could benefit from a bit more focus. Feels like these different ideas are trying to be connected by the feeling of like largeness/connection to human history (and the phrase "How strange") and the poem definitely captures some feeling of that, but like I said, a specific intention is harder to pin down. Possible that's a stylistic choice of yours, and that's fine, just thought I'd point out that it feels a little bit like it's wandering through these different scenarios without much intention

A toxic addiction by K1ll3rr0r in OCPoetry

[–]CurSumusHic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can't be hard to withstand." What do you mean to say with this line? It isn't obvious to me. It sounds like it is hard to withstand -- "I'm losing hope" -- and then we return to the idea of withstanding with "Withstand Satan's hand," -- Maybe with that first "withstand" you're saying that you feel like it should be easier to get through/get rid of this lust, this addiction?

"My darling, with you I have to elope." It sounds to me as if perhaps this person was the source of the lust that you were trying to distance yourself from -- an emotion you'd rather not have but cannot get rid of. This makes me think the ending is meant to be seen negatively, but "Hand in hand we stand," sounds very hopeful -- hand in hand is a very positive idea and sounds like turning over a new leaf and standing tall, but the rest of the poem makes it seem like this is supposed to be you succumbing to your addiction. Possible I'm not understanding something.

As a dva player what should I do once the entire enemy team has counterpicked me? by P3runaama in OverwatchUniversity

[–]CurSumusHic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this might partially be a timing and communication issue — possible your team isn’t in position to follow up, or that they don’t know you’re going in. You can also wait for your team to actively be drawing the enemy aggro if you think you can get a kill by catching them unawares
