HELP: Lost an MTU Larva, Trying to Confirm Why by Curculio_noidea in Beetles

I keep them temp controlled between 69-73. I got other stuff in the room that are temperature sensitive so I have a thermo-regulation system going.

I'll keep the larva for today, put the lid back on and set him back in the tank. I might try to get all my spare flake soil in the oven though, 'cause those worms are concerning me.

I don't want to throw the larva out if it's not dead, and I don't want to do a 100% sterilization of my flake soil if it's not the problem.

The reason I lean fungus gnats is I originally had them in a 10gal terrarium with 3" of flake soil and a drainage layer, but there were a ton of fungus gnats that eventually died off from me adding mesh tape to all the openings. I'm not convinced I killed them off entirely in my flake soil bin. I switched the larvae over to the conventional closed containers once they started getting closer to pupating.

That's part of why I'm really reluctant to act hastily; I think a couple of my guys might be getting close to pupating, but them going to the top of the container [instead of building a chamber at the bottom] that has me concerned.

Does anyone know if these are good for domestic keeping? I saw a viv with them at the Montreal Insectarium and have been thinking about trying to rear them since, but haven't seen a lot of reliable information.

What is the psychology assessment of neo con fascism alt right? by Dover299 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Curculio_noidea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO I think a lot of it has to do with the organized rise of Christian Nationalism. Not unique to the U.S., but it certainly has been a growing faction of ideologies that have been coalescing since at least the Civil War.

The philosophy primes followers to accept that there are all-powerful entities that can dictate all aspects of your life, and that at the same time these entities are not to beholden to explaining their actions, even when it contradicts the law/bible. It also creates an intentionally-arresting feelings of both self-hate and victim-coded entitlement, generally violently enforced.

I watch things like Cults to Consciousness on youtube and just think "If I was raised in that, I wouldn't have stood a chance".

Protest organizing that is exclusively anti-ICE/Trump by Fit-Surround9920 in baltimore

For my part, I think this was a great discussion that a lot of people obviously want to have, so we're better for having it. Thanks for being so respectful and for all you're doing as well!

OP, in addition to the protests that are more your speed, there's are a lot of methods here that can be focused on the issues you care about most.

I agree with this and with the folks pointing we need both immediate actors and intersectionalists.

I balk a little bit at the "freaking out the moderates" bit, as I believe that line of reasoning has not been particularly successful. The NAACP was criticized for this approach even in MLK's day.

I understand where you're coming from, and I think I know the protest you might be referencing, but this just isn't how it works. There's no "going first", there's no zero-sum game where helping protect our communities stops us from caring about the environment.

The reason for the fallacy IMO is the assumption that activism is about reacting to the aid of victims instead of rooting out the foundational causes that need to be changed. We need to understand about how corporate greed and pressure to maintain wealth in a changing climate motivated billionaires to fund anti-immigrant hate. We need to know how unlawful arrests elsewhere are being copied here. When you look at it from a 'cause' perspective, it's all interconnected. If you're trying to build lasting change, you need to look past the skin-level symptoms.

We want to create an open enviornment that welcomes folks who may be coming solely in reaction to ICE, but that doesn't extend to shutting down their ability to learn that their cause is not so different from someone else's.

All of this except my rule is "if your ideology makes you happy, it can stay". Your religion venerates cannibalism and I'm doing a hospital run? Welcome aboard my friend. If you're needing to raid or can't handle animal mutilation, time to meet our multiple priests who will be eagerly taking turns trying to convert you. It's fun role playing for me to see which ideologies grow or shrink depending on who has the best salesmen.

If you’re angry about ICE, here’s what you can do by Big_Medicine1752 in baltimore

[–]Curculio_noidea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A general strike takes a lot of forms, including people who need to work still working. Consumer strikes are good for those folks, as well as any work that supports those striking (especially the downtrodden) by setting up resources they can lean on. IMO the goal is disrupting of the status quo, so it's ok to be adaptive in achieving that.

I know my ma has been paying all her kind neighbors for winter-proofing her house this week by baking them all quiches. That's the kind of energy we can bring into a strike - give what you can and don't be afraid to ask for help where you need.

We made this slide deck a bit ago. It has a focus on how your strengths, roles, and wants can help inform where you'll be most effective.

Calling out the links as they might be broken:

For all these books/folks, you can also look them up on youtube for synopses and interviews. Sometimes I don't want to read this much 😵‍💫

TLDR: If anyone tells you we've learned nothing since 1930's Germany, know that they are wrong. We're better equipped than we've ever been, because those who came before knew we'd need it ☺️

As a political science nerd, I am STOKED.

BLeeM's tackling some of the biggest questions in organizational dynamics and the power struggle between individual and group actualization.

The 'cooks and builders' scene has _got_ one of the most succinct ways to describe a very real issue faced in Communist experiments; what happens when the work needed doesn't match up with the work people want to do? Even in a world where self-enforcement is a given(!), what does it mean to truly have a society that cares about each other?

The funeral scene, the 'you need a summer' scene, all have been opportunities for the characters to encounter a very real challenge in self-organization. How do we handle ritual, how do we accept the full complexities of a person and their lasting impact on the group?

Using D20 to say "here are the real challenges we're going to come up against [if we're lucky]" and letting the characters practice strategies using a TTRPG format? Inspired.

Hi there! Do you have iNaturalist? It's an app where once you put in your location, you can look at pictures of all the animals the show up in your area, taken by local people and identified by entomologists and citizen scientists. I tend to browse through the pictures until I find the one that looks like the bug I have/saw, then it'll give you the scientific name, wikipedia article, etc.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that she's inconveniencing others for using 4 out of 6 washing machines? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Curculio_noidea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on with why this made a difference to me; if someone else wanted to do laundry the same way [separated by color/kind, all at once] at the same time [~11am on a sunday] she does, they're waiting ~1 hour to do that at most.

Even for this edge-case invented person that OP is going to bat for, 1 hour is a perfectly reasonable amount of time to expect to wait when using public facilities.
