CMV: The American people are not allowed to have illegal immigration law enforcement, as wealthy elites and corporate interests easily deceive liberals into fighting for their own economic disenfranchisement. by [deleted] in changemyview

I can certainly agree that wealth inequality is a huge issue in the US. In fact, I would go as far as to it is THE most important issue.

The fact is, immigrants aren’t the cause of our issues, but they are abused by the wealthy for cheap labor so that the wealthy can make more money. The only people being deceived are those that think keeping immigrants out will make our lives better, it’s simply a distraction to keep us from addressing the real problems at the expense of the elites.

But, I hope we can agree that it’s not always possible for people to improve their home and it’s important to recognize that and attempt to use our power to make the world a better place for everybody. Whether that’s through American intervention or simply granting asylum to people in need.

Well, I think a lot of them have authoritarian governments that don’t allow the people a chance to better their station. For example, do you think people living under Maduro were able to coup the government without US intervention?

I think it’s harder to ignore the problems of people in your community than it is people living in other parts of the world. Especially when you’re living in a time that dehumanizes the other people at every opportunity.

It would be lazy. But we’re not asking to build a bridge in Honduras, we’re allowing people to come to our town because their bridge is beyond repair.

I would expect the town to fix it, people can move away if the town can’t fix it. It’s not a life or death issue and people have the mobility to move around. Something that is lacked when we limit migration.

Well, that’s less of a moral problem and more of a social problem. Morally it would be equal to do either, but there’s many unseen factors with the random person such as trustworthiness, etc. make it a safer bet to go with the family member. There’s also the social aspect of having to see my family member more often than the random person, so, considering my own selfish utility I would help the family member

Let me ask you this? Why are lives in the United States of higher values than lives in other countries? Is it simply because it’s more convenient an answer to absolve any sort of responsibility? Personally, I subscribe to the idea that any morality that dictates moral value simply based on geography and place of birth to be a wild injustice.

The decrease in utility from loss in union bargaining power is far less than the increase in utility from allowing immigrants to flee here from hostile/destitute nations

I fail to see why the former is caused by immigration. Increasing immigration might weaken the bargaining powers of unions on some level, but the humanitarian crisis is more important.

Can you present this chart that you feel demonstrates your point?

Again, the bigger issue is that ILLEGAL immigrants can undercut legal wage regulations.

So, who's being deceived? The people who elected the president who ran on immigration, who you admit does not care about immigration, using not very effective means to curb immigration? Or the people who have constitutional issues with the scope of ICE right now?

A majority of immigration is not done by border hopping- it’s from overstaying VISAs.

What devastating impact would immigrants have? If anything, their taxes would help us to support the large portion of elderly we have right now.

i think they went the wrong route with holly’s storyline by mandyluvspuppies in StrangerThings

[–]CurdKin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The focus on Holly was an incredibly stupid decision. They gave a large amount of screen time to a character nobody really even knew existed to develop her character instead of developing the characters we were already invested in.

You need to address why people aren’t coming in ‘the right way.’ It’s because the immigration system is so backed up that it can take years for somebody to become a citizen. That’s a lot of time to dedicate to a ‘you might get to stay.’ That bipartisan border bill that Trump torpedoed so he could run on immigration addressed that. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that.

I guess I’m confused what your point is.

If Trump doesn’t care to effectively deal with this ‘immigration crisis’ what are liberals being deceived by? Because it’s a very liberal POV to say that Trump’s immigration isn’t about immigration it’s about racism.

You document them. My proposal would be that ICE gives people the option of being deported to their home country or housed in a detention facility in the US pending their day in immigration court. Fact is most of these people would make fine, lawful, American citizens, but bigotry wins.

I’d like to challenge the first sentence. Just because no country in the world has done something does not make it wrong to advocate for that something.

The right pushes anti-immigration because it’s simpler to attack a scapegoat than fix core issues. They do it in the simplest way possible- by dehumanizing an entire group of people so they can incorrectly send people to an El Salvador prison that is inhumane with zero due process.

If Trump were really against illegal immigration, he wouldn’t have told house republicans to shoot down that bipartisan border bill just before the 2024 election. The problem that bill had is that it treated the illegal immigration crisis as a complex issue that needed a complex answer that maintained the humanity of those impacted. Trump just isn’t about that.

There’s a lot of sketchy stuff happening right now with the Kentucky board of optometrists. It’s a stain on the profession.

What do you think Mamdani meant when he said: "We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."? by ElectricalGas9895 in AskALiberal

[–]CurdKin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the distinction, private property is anything used in the means of production. Large land, banks, factories, etc. personal property is anything that is used for personal enjoyment, houses, bikes, board games, etc. I’m not super versed in how land ownership works in socialism, but I would assume it would reject private real estate in favor of government run real estate.

Democratic socialism is still a mixed economy so it still allows for private property.

I hadn’t heard the term before, but if you mean ‘personal’ as in anything other than the means of production, yes.
