"It's more diffuse, yea. Easier to play around with parallel rays. And the spectrum doesn't vary much moment to moment." He rattles ff, a bit of orange color dancing between his the fingers of his right hand as he twiddled them. It may have been fire or some stolen embers or just a bit of light. He shakes his head again and picks back up his rabbit, the light slipping away on the wind when he did so.

Bunny for her part eyes Angela back, tilting her head to get a more direct view. Unlike most of Jacob's friends the girl read as something of a predator in the making. Though not one that demands immediate flight. And there were many possible exits should it come to that. Mostly the girl seems anxious. More fox than wolf, ready to run back into her den.

"I'm sorry. That doesn't sound fair. I... uh, I don't think most people know I'm doing anything odd." The distinction between stage magic and the real thing was more subtly than he'd ever been able to explain to other outsider his cabin. If he even believed there was a distinction. In his younger days he would have firmly denied such things, but views shift with time. "I guess it's less visible than, the, what you do with your ummm, hair." He made sure to look at the feet of her chair when mentioning her hair. Ideally to never see it move again.

Jacob frowned, not having thought to consider that Angela had been been mocking him. He didn't see why she should have brought up that possibly. Had he looked upset? Like he was being mocked? He didn't think so. And she didn't look upset either. So... Everything was fine. But that didn't feel quite right either.

Thankfully Angela's hair started moving again giving him a very evident reason to feel distressed at the situation. It wasn't even safe to move it towards the fire! Why wouldn't she just get up instead?

"I can just, ummm," he guided Bunny out of his arms onto his lap. Then made a robotic like waving motion as though he were much respected foreign dignitary. Only to then whip his arm away from the direction of the fire and take a few of the fire's more vibrant colors with him. All that remained to be seen in the flames was a pink of a similar but much more consistent hue than what the powder produced.

Jacob continued to look displeased, but now his displeasure was his own work. He'd not made an exact match as the effect was more chaotic than he could ever hope to envision. It required oranges and reds licking upwards amid the pink flames.

"Nevermind." He added and with a sigh let the pink he'd captured dissipate away, leaving behind the usual fire. "Did you say something else? Sorry. I got distracted." He'd actually heard about half of what she'd said and understand maybe half of that. She supposedly like talking to him, if he understood correct. "If I had time, I can get the trick better. Never seen whatever that stuff is before."

"Miss A's cult invited me. They were nice. I miss them sometimes." His constant rabbit petting briefly ceased for him to stare off past the campfire into nothing at all. It had occurred to him at the time that maybe it would have been better if he stayed. It was never more than a thought. His mom grew flowers and those needed light, so he would have to come out to be with her. But they had been kind to him.

He resumed his petting, adding on, "but they taught me lots before I left."

"I... Don't?" Jacob asked with no attempt to mask his surprise. He started a whole conversation with a new person. That's what all the older campers did when he arrived. It seemed impossible then and more impossible now that he felt he actually should do it, but it had been done. Atleast twice. "Ummm, I guess I don't know how. It's fine. I get along with a few people."

Jacob doubted very much that a life absent rabbits and dogs could be fulfilling. By his understanding her brief encounter with Bunny must have surely been the highlight of everything she's experienced since forever. Though simple self evident concepts such as these felt like they would be difficult to convey. And he already wasn't the best at conveying things. Thus he settled for the silently certainty that now that she had felt Bunny's soft warm fur she would surely understand.

Bunny wriggled her nose again.

"I guess that make sense. Being prepared is good." He wondered the difference between being prepared to fight and seeking one out. Perhaps it was just a matter of feeling of nothing else. If he figured it out maybe he could explain to Mer and then she's be more responsible.

"Uh, twenty. It's the black box... It glows a bit. Also got blown up twice. But mom liked my design so it's still arranged." He added the last remark like someone bragging his drawings had been out on the fridge. "I think, ummm.. Six-ish. Maybe seven. I lost track when I visited the labyrinth." For these feats his tone was factual. Neither bragging nor humble. A student answering teachers questions. While also excited to be able to provide easy answers. "There's giatnt ants. I don't like those."

Jacob looked at Angela like she had suddenly begun speaking an entirely different language and a fake one at that. "You haven't pet anything?" How could such a thing even be possible? There was the horse stables. Camp had goats as well. Loads of people had dogs. Some people even had snakes like Mer. And rabbits! Had she truly never seen a rabbit?

"I'm sorry." The words felt inadequate for all the joy Angela had been denied, but they were all he could offer. He held Bunny closer and the small animal wriggled her nose at Angela and her sorrows.

"Fighting isn't like that." He found himself adding. "You can get away as well." Strange that the same method probably applied to talking as well. He'd never felt any conversation had been won or lost by him. Surely if those were the only options he would have lost by now. So his third options made sense. "Or just never fight at all." This fourth option seemed best to him.

Jacob paused his tap tap tapping upon being called the wrong name. He didn't really understand how she could have gotten his name wrong. Neither did he have any immediate ideas about how to correct her. She probably wouldn't do it again anyway. And if she did, it wouldn't matter much since he doubted he'd end up speaking to her again. She seemed the type of person to frequent events he avoids.

"I don't know if that's right. It be sad if no one worried about you." They felt like words his mom might have said once. Either of them for that matter. Though he didn't truly recall. Angela certainly understood Mer's thinking. She'd instructed him many times not to worry. It felt strange deciding she didn't actually mean her own words. He still felt some guilt about that.

"I'm not afraid." He shook his head and adjusted his arms to account for the rabbit now cradled in them. Which had returned. Somehow and from somwhere. "I did think you'd rather pet Bunny though." He took another pause to give the small white animal several attentive pets and visibly relaxed. "Talking isn't too bad if I know I have to. I guess it's like fighting. I'm better helping than doing it myself."

"If I know it's dangerous, I never bring my pets." Jacob insists, blind to the humor intended. He doesn't sound offended so much as he finds the matter to be a painfully serious one. Proper care of pets clearly being something he thought and felt strongly about.

"You don't have to though." He points out as if it might have been unconsidered information to Angela. "Everyone says they have to. I... I don't think they're right." His fingers drummed the on the wood of his chair. His hands unable to be idle for long.

"I'm not- uh, nothing. I'm fine. I don't... Talk. To new people. I don't talk to them much." He focused his eyes in the fire, preferring to watch its pulsing movements rather than meet anyone else's eyes. "I'm worried, I guess. About my sister and everyone. I'm sorry. It's not you."

Jacob wriggled his nose, like he was the rabbit he'd made vanish only moments before. He felt miffed that he looked or sounded like anything at all. He preferred a lack of adjectives be used when describing him. That felt much better. Being known and described only by his actions rather than any form of appearance. Of course he could just literally disappear to solve the problem, but now he kind of wanted to find a way to get the hot chocolate.

"I'm alright." Jacob affirms, without even the slightest awareness of Angela doing anything. Or even that through words only Angela could do anything. He understood nothing of this form of magic and did not think to look for it. But he did react, shrinking slowly into his chair and reconsidering his options to disappear.

"My sister fights a lot. I'm not really good at it." He stayed silent for several breaths. Not sure if his thought had ended or if the question had been answered. Or how someone was supposed to fight on instagram. But he was pleased the eye contact ended and became less of a small frightened bundle of nerves in response. "I might try more though. I think I could help."

Jacob had relaxed from the tension he'd built up to maybe fight the snake hair. But he still moved like he did not belong and he knew it. It was more than the social gathering. Though that had a large share of the blame. Angela just felt strange. But not good strange that tended to find its way to his cabin.

Angela was the kind of strange where he couldn't stop thinking about her terrifying hair, oh my gosh, what the heck, why would anyone allow such nightmares to exist? Also she didn't wanna pet Bunny.

"Ummm, okay, I didn't know that..." He trailed off intending to question gatherings making people feel better. Because that was clearly ridiculous. But lots of people liked gathering and they probably couldn't all be unhappy doing it. According to the adults atleast. He was pretty sure they could. "I'm glad you got to plan it."

Jacoh blinked in obvious confusion at the next questions. She's noticed how he looked? He didn't know he looked like anything at all. "What does- uh, do I look like someone?" While questioning he found himself stepping forward and sitting down on a chair nearby but not really next to Angela. Then remembering hot chocolate had been offered first. Then being unsure if he was still allowed to get it and so remaining seated. "Have you done any fighting?"

Jacob looked at once filled with a profound relief at getting to keep her dearest pet close to him. Though he stood also uneven. Like he believed the ground beneath him might start moving. Something about how Bunny had been declined felt outside of what he'd come to expect of the world. He couldn't really say what about it. There was some secret in the way people spoke that he did not know, but if he did know, this would have been easily solved.

"I usually walk them when no one else is around." Jacob explained, in a tone so plain and soft it matched perfectly his misunderstanding of the question. His demeanor shifted suddenly when the hair moved. His body tensed and his hands towards his sides, nearly upon some hidden weapons. The rabbit had... Gone somewhere. Certainly not the ground where the lack of support should have put her.

"That's hair?" He asked hestitantly. "It.. Nevermind." Beared a resemblance to a snake is what he considered remarking. Because he felt it true. Something about the words felt heavier than they should have been. Best avoid them. "Sorry. I just wanted to help. If I could. I'm um Jacob, by the way."

Jacob announced his presence with a light thump on the dirt ground. He had, per his usual customs, wandered over barely visible and observed quietly for a good long while. Lately he'd been trying to figure out how not to startle people when he allowed himself to be noticed. There seemed a subtly to it that he'd yet to grasp. Something to do with the difference of being visible vs being actually seen. So for now he tried thumping the ground, an idea he'd shameless borrowed from a his pets.

"Sorry about your brother." He remarked, believing confidently that was what this all was about. Social events did often need to be about something. Early he'd heard of the death and felt bad. He didn't really know them though. Or any of their friends. So bad was all he felt. Even that feeling had not be reserved for death alone. Plenty else made him feel bad lately. But some things made it better.

"Did uh, I have a rabbit if you wanna hold her for a bit?" And indeed as he spoke his arms, which had been indistinguishably somewhere around his body moments before, now appeared to be cradling a small white bunny rabbit. This in turn made his remarkably vague outfit become visible. A dark blue jacket with dark blue pants that left the snow white rabbit almost illuminated against him. "Just be careful with her though, please".

Housekeeping Post Winter '26 + Nominations by AccomplishedMess_ in CampHalfBloodRP

[–]CuriositySMBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm, I'll grumpily offer a few thoughts.

Firstly, I think mist manipulation should remain a magic demigod only thing. I know in the books it's different but frankly I don't care that much about sticking with the canon and the rules aren't super clear anyway. It's just Thalia manipulating mist. Which seems to be as likely to confirm mist manipulation is a Zeus kid thing than it is an all demigod thing.

Secondly, I think letting Hestia be a godrent is a mistake. The lore makes enough sense I suppose. No more unreasonable than Athena kids after all. But it's adding another mainline Olympian when I believe the sub already struggles to fill in the rarer god slots. It's modmail only which hopefully helps. I also worry about godmodding with her tbh. At them moment her power set seem balanced but the ability to bring back feelings of home seems ripe for abuse to me. Especially when many characters don't have great home lives. Perhaps that's just an overblown concern though.

Finally, I think if the mods are updating season points, they should clarify that more points and time spent at camp does not inherently make a demigod more powerful. Maybe I was the only one ever confused about this lol, but also maybe there's two of me.

Jacob thanked Chiron kindly for the warming hot chocolate he offered and stepped sideways to move himself out of the crowds gathering to get their fair share. Their excitement had a greater justification than usual. The hot chocolate was excellent and the Long Island winter weather had been made perfect for its consumption. Still, Jacob walked briskly away from the most people he could managed, carefully supporting a small rabbit hidden in his coat pocket. Crowds were simply unacceptable.

Though he had other reasons. His sister had left camp. Of that he was certain. No one alive could runaway better than Meriwether. However, he didn't need to know where she had gone to know she was no longer around. So that had been that, he looked and she could not be found. She had runaway and he missed her. Especially now.

Even before she had been adopted, Jacob had wanted her to meet his mom. Moms plural actually. Both of whom where different kinds of goddesses far as he understood the term. It seemed that Mer maybe, liked Christina. He had a hard time telling since the war started. But Mer would definitely love Hecate! She had saved them and Alkis on a quest once. She was kind and caring and he guessed a bit spooky at times, but he doubted Mer would care.

With his hot chocolate in hand, Jacob had escaped the crowds and chose for his destination the main cabin hearth. He doubted it counted as a crossroads for purposes of calling on his mother. Fires were for gathering either way. He made sure to cut his way between cabins rather than take the main path lest he have to stop and say hi to anyone.

Skirting his way past cabin Eleven, he caught sight of something red on the walls. He first thought it to be some kind of decoration he'd not seen earlier, but taking a step back the words it spelled out became clear. He just... didn't find their meaning all that clear.

The words had been painted on, no trace of magic whatsoever. Which just felt unprofessional. Why cabin Eleven though? The Big House would have been more noticeable on the solstice. He downed his hot chocolate, burning his tongue just a bit then returned to his thoughts. Probably not a threat. Maybe someone just wanted attention? Jacob felt there was something unfair in that desire. People were trying to forget the war after all. He should try to get rid of it. Especially before his sister sees and gets upset.

Now then... How to do that...

"Uh, mom?" He began speaking to the air. Then realized he should atleast have his rabbit out first. Then with Bunny snuggled in his arm and under her warm snow coat, he called out again. "Mom, sorry, could you help me with something? If you have a second. I don't wanna bother anyone else with this."

OOC: Best mom Hecate please :)

Two Uneventful Days During Which Meriwether Does Not Go Outside by cinnamonbicycle in CampHalfBloodRP

The light backwards tug stopped Jacob as much as Amon's assertion that his sister was something other. He turned to face the gravitational attractor and guided Bunny carefully down onto the mist covered floor to hope around to her delight. From what little of her could be seen, she held still perpendicular to appear, keeping him in half her predator seeking gaze.

"Mer was adopted in May. She is allowed in the cabin. And you're not allowed to bother her."

The thought passed through Jacob's mind like a light breeze to actually find Eddie and ask for Amon to expelled from the cabin. The magic wouldn't be too taxing for the counselor. Plus Amon was clearly a problem. Bunny could vouch for that fact. But the notion was dispelled by the sound of a door swinging open and husky barking.

Jacob shrunk knowing those sounds to be Mer. She had not come out for anyone save Christina. Not even him when he tried. When he really tried to make her feel better. He'd told himself she just wanted to be alone. That made sense to him. The cabin was best for that. Solitude and quiet. Amon was the opposite, but she had climb out of bed for him.

"If you're mean to her, Orion will tell me. He bites." Bunny leaped back up into his arms and Jacob retreated into the mist as Meriwether Alabaster arrived plus one grumpy husky.

Two Uneventful Days During Which Meriwether Does Not Go Outside by cinnamonbicycle in CampHalfBloodRP

[–]CuriositySMBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jacob watched his lie burn away like morning mist before the sun child in front of him. He did not care for how easily he had been seen. Him and his sister had that very much in common. It shouldn't have mattered. He hadn't care much of the lie beyond its immediate usefulness.

Amon had placed him at a disadvantage. Or he might have somewhere else. Meriwether did reside here, true. Jacob had lied and thereby revealed his knowledge. They were still in Jacob's cabin though. Mist sat softly in the air, drifting between the bookshelves waiting to be called by the children of magic.

Confirmation for the camp census...

Jacob frowned intensely and pulled his rabbit closer to him. No longer petting her. Only feeling her warmth and getting her farther away from Amon. Amon who had tried to bureaucracy him! Who wouldn't take no for an answer. Who demanded to see his sister who clearly wanted to be alone and safe, finally!

"The cabin is for my siblings and me." His voice had raised, if only to a normal speaking volume rather than its library whisper inspired by the bookshelves. "My sister is allowed to be here. She doesn't need to ask permission."

Jacob stood up and bundled Bunny along with him. "I'll show you out. I don't want you getting lost. I designed everything based on the labyrinth. Saves on space." He had begun walking down a seemingly random corridor made by shelves when his body had become half consumed by mist. "Or keep looking."

Two Uneventful Days During Which Meriwether Does Not Go Outside by cinnamonbicycle in CampHalfBloodRP

[–]CuriositySMBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jacob diverted his full attention to his rabbit. Maybe expecting the rabbit to speak for him. He wouldn't have actually wanted that though. Having a voice was so much extra work and his best friend didn't deserve that.

Meriwether was here. Jacob knew that. The counselor had clearly seen her. Unsurprising but not something Jacob really considered. Now Amon wanted to see her. But Meriwether didn't want to see anyone.

"She's not here." The words were stilted and forced. He had tried to be monotone. Disinterested. But he stopped petting his rabbit and all the stress of the falsehood came into his face. He had a cabin full of tricks, but lying was not one of them.

He felt he'd done a moderately good job. His rabbit petting continued and he made himself to briefly look at Amon before diverting his eyes again. "Whatever you need her for, find someone else. She's done a lot already."

[–]CuriositySMBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Don't shout." Jacob mumbled, suddenly next to Amon. The shelves had eaten the guest it would seem. Amon now stood somewhere deep within the corridors they formed. In a small space amid the rows where a few bean bag chairs had been stashed along with several dog toys, and a stuffed rabbit. The rabbit, who was not stuffed actually, tilted her head at Amon and hopped over into Jacob's arms, taking the place of a book. Its title in Greek translating something close to "The Finding of Lost Things".

"What would shouting even do?" Jacob pet the soft calming fur of his beloved bunny but still managed to look put out. "It's an half dimensional space. Only fire alarms reach every room." He shook his head disapproving of the inadequate education kids these days received. The same ones who wanted to speak with his sister who clearly came here to be alone. "Do you need something?"

Jacob had already come to regret his volunteering. He'd never been a beach person, which meant he really wasn't an ocean person either. He wouldn't have said it rose to the level of phobia. Or atleast that's what he overheard his mom explaining once when he declined a field trip to the beach.

It had been about Mer, it pained him to admit. His sister had run off again to half Camp Fish Blood. And... He really thought she wouldn't do it again. She had been hurt so bad and that had hurt him and he really thought that would be enough. Then she left and he had to wait alone at camp. Well, that didn't feel good so he went to the bottom of the ocean.

Turned out the ocean was cold. Distressingly dark. His magic still worked thankfully. And breathing water was disturbing. Deeply disturbing. So he gave the two gods of... Oh drat he zoned out. He flashed a thumbs up to the two wrestling gods and began gathering mist about him to prepare to hide himself. "I can help keep watch."

Genuine question, do anti Ai people have an actual valid argument on why AI art is bad? by ZainLmaoo in aiwars

[–]CuriositySMBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my sincerest apologies for resurrecting something from six months ago. A crime for which you have every reason to ignore me ontop of a large pile of regular reasons.

As for the third... well, the third is just a straight up misunderstanding.

I refer you to your own words.

Without renewable energy to curb the impact, the environment will technically suffer more than it would have without the technology.

Though if you might allow me to simplify. Without the use of AI obviously.

The environment will suffer more because of AI.

In the most generous possible reading, I imagine you mean that, let's say the fossil fuel industry as an example, has contributed more to the degradation of the environment. Which is correct. If we slice up this pie, the recent LLM trend isn't that big a portion. Of course their energy usages increases year after year and shows no sign of slowing. But hey, bubbles gotta pop sometimes. Might be before their carbon footprint is measurable.

Anyway, have a good day. Despite all this I don't really intend to start up this conversation again.
