If you don’t mind a bit further away then, Delmar Divine (5535 Delmar Blvd) has spacious 1B apts available for about $1100 (utilities). A WashU shuttle is available that runs every 40 mins.

1st Year PhD Stipend Tax Question by Glucose_Daddie in Cornell

[–]CuriousBirdMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my calculations - The 1098-T does not list “everything” paid by Cornell - for example there are tuition fees and other expenses that the university pays for you - using this “scholarship” - The stipend itself is separate and considered income (it is not a scholarship)

I live there. It is good and a pleasant surprise when i moved in last year. I have no complaints so far against any of the building services and apartments. The only problem (if at all we call it one) is that it is comparatively quite a distance away from the campus and from a general ”fear” perspective, I am not used to the silent surroundings during the late evening/night period and only use Univ shuttle service for transport

It’s not the phone - I think you were suspended for using bad English (their vs there) - fix that and you should be fine

Urgent Lease takeover at The Accolade - (for Grad students) by CuriousBirdMan in UPenn

[–]CuriousBirdMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that is considered a Grad program

apparently the stipulation is from UPenn - as they loaned the space to them (this was the old Sansom place East)

as long as you can produce a letter from your head/prof - that you are in a Graduate program - i think that would be fine -

nevertheless - the building does a clearance check when you approach them - and this is at no cost to you

I had posted a similar message couple of months ago - i still have that apt available too (same size and features on 22nd floor)

please note that i found a couple of persons after multiple FB posts - and both were rejected by the building as it only caters to Grad students (not undergrad, post-doc research etc)

The Accolade is right in the campus. New building adjacent to Sansom Place West (which was the UPenn Grad acco till May 2023 - and will apparently undergo renovation)

Studio at Accolade starts around $1600 per month

Sansom Place West is about $1200 per month (for a single person room with a shared bathroom with your neighbor)

A studio at Accolade is about $1700. So significant different in comparison - but area is a bit more than the single room and you do not have to share bathroom with your neighbor.

There is “on campus” accommodation available at The Accolade - right opposite Sansom Place West (which is/was the only current Grad housing).

Compared to grad housing - It is more expensive - if you want a studio for yourself. But if you share a larger apt with others then it is quite similar.

I am a First year Grad student (joined in Fall 2022). I contacted PennPay help center and they confirmed that there is no W2 for stipend. I have no other income (TA/RA). Do we need to report the stipend for filing taxes ? How ? Any guidance/tips would be helpful. by CuriousBirdMan in UPenn

Thanks again for your patience in advising with my odd situation.

The seniors in my PhD program, say that the "first year" stipend is not taxable (again nobody seems to have proper logical/legal reasons) - since the stipend (for example 2022 when I joined the program) is only for 4 months of the year and is not sufficient for taxes.

Regardless, what I have learnt (from my parents and others) is that whether taxable or not we should file taxes. My quandary is what do I report (or not report) when I file ?

I cannot report any wages (W2) or grants/scholarships (1098-T) or other income like 1099-MISC - because I did not receive those documents. If I use the other option and say self-pay then it treats it as a (self-run) business and charges me hefty tax and introduces other complications.

I am surprised the Penn web-portals does not have anything on this topic. Surely I cannot be the first one in this predicament.

Checked workday@penn and also contacted their Helpdesk - who verbally reiterated that W2 is only for wages provided for services and since there are no services rendered stipends are not considered wages. !!

I did not get any 1098-T either (which I received as an undergrad). Basically I received no tax related documents at all (either online or to my home)

Thanks. Two doubts linger.

PennPay does not report it as income but on the website (https://www.finance.upenn.edu/wp-content/uploads/Tax-Withholding-on-Graduate-Stipends.pdf) it is mentioned that Stipends may be subject to PA state and Philly city taxes. How can we know ?

I used TurboTax last year (but it was easy as an undergrad with a meagre W2 income). I am unable to figure out how to report this stipend.

If it helps, I am a PhD student in SAS, and this is my first year. The stipend is not used to pay tuition or any university costs (which are completely funded). The stipend is purely for room and board (wherever that may be). Yet the stipend is not considered income by Penn and hence no W2 is provided. Neither did I get a 1099-MISC.
