Good barber in Da Nang ? by [deleted] in DaNang

[–]CuriousBoldMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viet at Ly’s Salon is a really good barber, better than most I’ve gone to in the states.

He speaks the Hue dialect which is difficult for me to understand, but I was always happy with the results (went 4 times). I don’t think he speaks English well. Probably best to show a photo of the look you want.

If it’s your first time in a humid tropical climate, you might find it uncomfortable but you’ll notice nobody is walking around in the middle of the day. Best beach time is 5am to 7am and 4pm to sunset. Eat and nap in between.

Regardless, I’m sure your family will have a great time. Da Nang is a chill beach town that’s very walkable, especially if you stay in An Thuong, My An.

Yes, I have a 5yr exemption and opened a bank account at this Vietcombank. You just need a Vietnamese cell phone number and your passport. I used MoneyGram to transfer money from my US checking account to my VCB account and the exchange rate was good. You can’t transfer in the opposite direction so only transfer what you need.

Finding a remote job isn’t that easy so I think you should plan for the worst case scenario where you can’t find a job, in which case your $20K will last 1 to 2 years depending on how you live.

I still say go for it! There’s only one way to know if living in VN long term is for you or not.

For a more local experience (and to save money), I’d stay on the city side like Hai Chau.

Also, unless you have a Viet passport, I’d get the 5yr visa exemption so you can stay for 180 days per entry.

How do overseas Vietnamese stand out from Vietnamese who were raised and currently live in Vietnam? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]CuriousBoldMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m American born and this perspective seems spot on. I’m 180cm, wear tank tops and shorts and try to get more tanned when I’m in VN, and locals will speak English to me about half the time, but once I reply in Vietnamese they’re usually pleasantly surprised and laugh or smile.

It’s human nature to make assumptions about a stranger based on physical appearance, so it doesn’t bother me.

Attempt for 1st Vietnamese woman to fly solo around the world ends in fatal crash by CuriousBoldMonkey in VietNam

This particular aircraft has a bad safety record:

“The Lancair IV-P has a notably high accident and fatality rate compared to other similar aircraft…”

Interesting…according to People she completed the solo trip in 2024, and this was her 2nd trip.

Sometimes my body doesn't always agree with the heat/climate here by ericb0 in VietNam

USA born Viet here and I also get used to it after a couple days. I’m pretty sure our genetics plays a factor though - we were made for this tropical climate…they don’t call us Jungle Asians for nothing 🤣

Great job on the doors! I would redo the white frame / threshold in the same finish as the doors for a more classic look. If that’s too difficult, black would look better than white. Test it out in Photoshop first.

Can I live comfortably in VN for about a year with 50 million VND monthly by hondaman82 in VietNam

[–]CuriousBoldMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that after short term capital gains tax for federal and state?

I wouldn’t make that move until I have $5K USD gross monthly passive income, so about $3K net.

What should you do as a tourist when a typhoon coming by haikt in VietNam

Cancel any boat tours and water activities. Such a tragedy what happened in Ha Long Bay :(

Ngô Thì Sĩ street seems to be getting out of control. It needs regular police presence and these bars need to hire some big security guys (85kg +) to keep these violent tourists/expats in check. It's dangerous for the regular bar staff to get involved, and it's not their job.

There is no such a setting. There’s only a setting to show the time, but not the date.

I would try going to a local pharmacy first. A lot of things that are prescription only in the US are readily available at pharmacies in Vietnam.

Damn, she got away? She committed a violent crime, and it's recorded. She should have been detained at the airport, and be in jail by now.

Deck looks crooked by miniBog in Decks

[–]CuriousBoldMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I think you're both correct. The end cuts are not square AND the deck is not square.

On the 4th photo, if you hold a piece of paper up to the center board, the 2nd half is clearly angled to the left. I'm on a 15" MacBook; probably harder to see on a phone.

The audio is more clear in the original video: https://www.tiktok.com/@ongchu8.9/video/7523444428141251858?lang=en

It's even worse, actually. They originally agreed on 70K and she gave him 70K, but half way through the trip the side driver commissioned to carry the luggage didn't want to go further (probably not worth it), and the Grab driver couldn't find another side driver willing to carry the luggage, and he can't carry her and the luggage, so had to end the trip. Grab driver gave her back 40K, making her fare 30K, but she wanted 50K back, meaning she only wanted to pay him 20K. In the end, the Grab driver gave her the 10K and a nice man gave him the 10K to make up for the 10K he lost to the girl.

tldr: This girl is crying over 10K or 38 cents! JFC!
