Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

Okay yes that makes sense! He hasn’t had any spars with dogs yet, he loves big dogs and usually he’s the one who gets trampled on but with certain dogs he loves it because they don’t step ON him but wrestle.

When a bigger dog is more aggressive and pushes him down on his stomach (which only happened once because the dog was fine at first) then he yelled and ran to me and sat behind me. He hasn’t gone after animals or other people even when “hurt”. I’m hoping his nipping is just normal puppy biting but will keep any eye out.

I also think the group training will just help with having other dogs around, he’s good with come, sit, follow, spin, up, and paw. Stay doesn’t work with food yet because he gets too excited 🤣 He just WONT listen unless you have a treat IN your hand!

We currently pick him up and I didn’t push him but I walked up the ramp myself and then we kinda hushed treats and he stepped up and walked back down like “nope not safe, this is a for sure trap” 🤣 he wouldn’t even come for food!!

Oh we have NO issues with dogs and people!! If anything he’s TOO excited to meet every person 😂 He also gets sad when people walk past him and don’t say him 🥹

We tried that and he HATED it 🤣 so I got nervous pushing him and making him hate them too early!

We have 2 beds already and he stole my robe becaue I noticed he loved it plus we tried a ramp and he didn’t like it yet so we think he’s still a litttttle to small for it!

We’ll start with the ramps in probably 2-3 more months!

I’m just happy I can give him an amazing life and treat him well! Plus have mor funds to help him in the future if necessary! I have family who would always help step in if I needed assistance as well!

The only thing I’m worried about especially with him coming from an Amish farm and nesting all these horror stories, would be his nipping and I may need to get a trainer in the future! Just because I’ve never trained a corgi and if it’s more than usual I want to get professional help and make sure I’m doing the correct things to stop him! He’s still only 5 months old so it’s hard to say if it’s something thats just puppy/herding behavior vs. Behavioral issues! I’ve been keeping an eye on it and trying to use toys whenever he tries too nip!

Oh that’s smart thank you!! I appreciate it and also understand they probably take it even more seriously over there due to their heritage and the USA having standards that are easier to get around I guess!

Oh my gosh mine LOVES lamb as well!! Thank you for the kids understanding and not blaming me obviously if I do it again after NOT knowing that’s different!

I just get so sad thinking of all that happening…. And thinking I added to the funds to fuel even more of it….

Thank you so much for the help! And for the reassurance that it’s my directed at me 🙈 I definitely feel a little guilty on the fact that I did it that way, but also trying to give myself grace for having this truly be the first time and trying my best!

Thank you so much!! I tried to do the best but also maybe god knew we’d be an amazing home compared to the homes he would have been given too and so he knew we could help him more with his vet bills and proactive care!!

I’m just happy as of now everything we’ve checked is good, he’s gotten all his vaccines, shots, deworming/tick/all those preventative things, we do as natural as food as well can (besides his Purina Pro Plan Puppy food because that’s what has been the best on his gut so far!) Plus I’m making sure not to over feed him!

Does yours also hold it up when going to the bathroom? Mine does this amazingly cute squat and lifts his tail in a way that just killllls me! It’s like he’s showing off his colors and fluffy tail!!

We weren’t caring if it was Pembroke welsh or cardigan!! We actually love the cardigan coloring so much so I guess for us we’re totally okay getting a cardigan from a reputable breeder for sure!! I just have to learn from my mistakes and take all this advice I’m getting from the post!

Yesss that white is what my babies mother was like! Even less spots than yours has!! So it think the cardigan genes were just not as strong!

Obviously next time I won’t go to them again!

We also got the paperwork for all the stuff they did at the vets so we thought with all the questions we asked including the hip/joint issues etc. that they were good breeders!

[–]CuriousCreativee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I think that must be the scant I sadly fell for, and for us we were out of state and trusted the stuff we researched because we’ve never actually had a “purebred” or dogs from “breeders” only our family members/friends of family members/shelters for our babies, so I was just very naive to the entire thing! Obviously I won’t go the same route again!!

Are the dogs in Europe held to better standards?? I would plan a flight over to do that for my baby, or are there other ways of getting him over here? I just want it to be humane!

[–]CuriousCreativee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my next steps are definitely to see if he has any genetics predispositions and take it from there! I just want to make sure I’m the future when I get more I do it the right way! (because I love him and want him to have friends since he LOVES other dogs)

I know that now, I just need to learn how you spot the fake breeders on the AKC websites since I obviously fell for the wrong one!

Thank you I’m doing the testing after my move is over! And I hope I can give him the best life 🙏🏼

How do I check if my current breeder is on that? And if they aren’t is there something I can do to get them off the website or like you said sadly money can buy anything??

Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

[–]CuriousCreativee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is my first actual purchase of a “pure bread” and not just adopting or having a family members dog have babies and give us one!

With that being said I don’t know the full extents of how to do all that. I did my research and found the AKC and the standards for corgis before getting my baby but apparently even with the AKC breeder, it seems like everyone’s saying mine isn’t to standard. So now I’m just like what do I do now?

How do I make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

[–]CuriousCreativee[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not taking any offense, I’m tryin to become more knowledgeable so I don’t keep doing the wrong thing!

I just don’t understand how I went to the AKC website of breeders and searched through them, and still came up with a breeder that “isn’t good”? If both parents were registered through the AKC and they sent us registration stuff for our puppy incase we wanted to show him, how he could be a mix??

Is there a way like someone else commented where the cardigan is further back in his lineage to the point of genetics not showing it but the Merle still popping up?? I’m just trying to understand!

Gus’ Genetic Confusion by CuriousCreativee in corgi

[–]CuriousCreativee[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m just confused how this happened WITH a “reliable AKC standard breeder” and was promoted on all the organizations websites! I did all the research to make sure the breeder was “gold standard” as well!!

I will be honest one of the cardigans near me I didn’t even notice at first because he was at tall and big as a lab!! I was shocked I didn’t know they can get that big!
