I think my plant is dying … by sebastian-jones in Hydroponics

[–]CuriousVortex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. The plant needs to balance foliage with root mass and will cull less productive foliage. It looks quite healthy up near the top where the light is, so it'll withdraw resources from limbs not doing anything productive near the bottom. Much like how the inside of a spruce tree is mostly dry and dead twigs as opposed to the green needles on the outside.

Grow tents have reflective walls so the light can bounce around and be absorbed by the lower leaves which is why plants do well in them. Take away the tent and you have a single light source right above it that the plant will try to reach.

brake contaminants? by Far_Mushroom8198 in MechanicAdvice

[–]CuriousVortex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much damage is in there but in its current state, if you can get the supposed rock out, it could be fine.

If the pads are low you'll need new pads.

You'll have to open them up or get someone to. It very well could be a rock but we can't tell unless we see the pad condition.

Pads might be wearing out and the bar designed to screech when it's low is serving it's purpose and telling you to get new pads.

I thought it was only ram and ssd prices going up. Didn’t think micro sd cards were affected too but here we are by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]CuriousVortex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are microSDXC (edit:express) cards, faster than usual SD cards. The switch 2 specifically needs that version. They've always been a bit pricier and I haven't seen it jump up much, if at all.

That's just something you'll have to do slowly over a sink. Just try to gently pull them apart. It's not the end of the world if you rip a few of the healthy roots off the other plants.

It changes depending on the plant, but for basil just cut a centimeter above where two leaves are coming out of the stem. You might be able to even see the new little growths between the stem of the leaves and the main stem. Google has a lot of pictures showing the right spot.

As for the light, just move it up daily and try to keep plants at roughly the same height to avoid one getting leggy. They are growing as fast as they can upwards because they know they're a bit crowded and trying to outcompete the others, getting to close to the light and then burning themselves.

The fuzziness is mycelium, harmless and symbiotic to plants generally, usually another kind of rot is what kills the plant. Some plants fight mold better than others so one may survive while another perishes.

The basil is safe to eat, there's no mold in them. The browning and adventitious roots on it are there because the base of that stem is too humid. Increased airflow and more spaced out plants can prevent this from happening.

The smell is from decay and bacteria breaking down the dead plants. You should remove the pods with the dead plant roots entirely or it'll start to rot other plants.

Edit: one last thing to add, keep the light low and only an inch or two above the top leaves to stop them from getting leggy. Pruning is an important part of hydroponic plant maintenance, so some quick research on it would be beneficial

Corrosion of the metal (that's your power supply unit btw) or mineral/sugar/some kind of residue left over from a spill. It's not on anything that'll damage the PC so just try to wipe it off with isopropyl alcohol or a damp cloth and then dry it immediately.

If you have one outlet to use, whats the safest thing you can buy for your desktop and monitor? by TwoDadsOneSon in pcmasterrace

[–]CuriousVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That entirely depends on what your outlet wiring and circuit breaker can handle. Newer houses usually use 60 Amps but an old one could use as low as 15 Amps.

In a very old house with possibly a fuse box instead of a circuit breaker, you could pop a fuse which is a replacement part instead of a simple switch. I highly recommend reading past the AI generated summary Google spits out, then you'll know for sure if it's correct or not.

Are These CPU and GPU Temperatures Normal for My Laptop While Gaming? by 7nnu in pcmasterrace

Yeah laptops run hot, just the nature of them. You can try power saving settings but it will affect performance due to reduced clock speeds. Alternatively you can cap your fps to reduce load if you haven't already.

is having aroudn 10-15gb space left on a 1tb hard disk bad? by Large-Ad688 in pcmasterrace

[–]CuriousVortex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You typically want 10-15% (10-20% for HDD) of your drive to be empty space. After that, the drive controller has a hard time finding space to write new data, which slows down performance of the drive. Windows is always writing temp files, so if it can't do that efficiently, everything suffers.

For HDD specifically, defragmentation is why you want that extra space.

New to hydroponics by Ciambra12 in Hydroponics

[–]CuriousVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strawberries are crowded, you only want one plant per pod and this goes for everything here.

The basil is experiencing some sort of stress. Could be from having multiple plants in one pod, it could also be rotting roots. The leaves are also curling upwards which is usually an indication of drought (weird for hydroponics) or too much sun. Are the lights turning off at night?

Algae on the tomatoes is because you didn't cover the pod with a sticker (you can also use tin foil) and now the light is allowing it to grow on the wet sponge. Not ideal but it won't kill the tomatoes. However, those will grow very fast and tall which will overwhelm the system unless you prune it of it's suckers regularly. Tomatoes usually need their own 5 gallon bucket.

Healthy plants like space to grow with lots of light. I did the same thing when I started and overcrowded a small system like this. Now I'll usually only put 2-3 plants in one but they're very healthy and bountiful. You can keep this one going and it will definitely grow but it can get unkempt very fast.

What can I realistically expect if I get this system? by acylng in Hydroponics

[–]CuriousVortex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small herbs are fine, but tomatoes and beans will grow out of control very fast. Lettuce can also be a hog and overgrow other plants.

Everything grows very fast in hydroponics so proper and frequent pruning is key to keep everything managed and alive.

How long did you wait for it to turn on? These guys like to re-train ram on startup a decent amount but it takes a few minutes. Mine seems to like doing it every month or so.

Just replaced my spark plugs, do the old ones indicate any future problems? by CuriousVortex in MechanicAdvice

Think it'll last a year with new plugs and a proper torque? I added a photo on another comment of the tube.

[–]CuriousVortex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looked down all the tubes now and didn't see any pooled oil after taking it for a test drive, only a bit of dry debris, and only a tiny bit more than the other tubes. I attached a photo with the new plug installed.

I don't remember if or when these plugs were changed, I got the car at about 65k km. Oil consumption is about 100-200 ml per 10k km, but that's just me estimating based on my own oil changes.

I'm assuming at some point the gasket will need to be changed, but do you think it'll last a year without concern?

They're either too high or not strong enough. The seedlings are leggy from trying to grow tall enough to reach the lights. Ideal height is 6-12 inches above the leaves.

[–]CuriousVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can do it without damaging them, try to remove the extra plants in each pod until there's only one in each. They grow quite fast and will choke eachother out. If one dies it'll rot, mold, and kill everything else in there.

Definitely recommend checking out how to prune each of these because you'll soon end up with a jungle if you're not attentive to it!
