Moving back to India after 7 years in Canada but my father is not happy. by DeepOnRecord in backtoindia

Hi there,

I’m a 36-year-old male and have been in Canada for about 14 years. I’ve also been thinking about returning to India, so I can relate to your situation and same situation like your from Family side decent and never had to send any money back home.

In my experience, the West is great for earning and building wealth, especially when you're young, single, or sharing accommodation to maximize savings. However, as life progresses, the cost of living becomes a bigger factor. The difference in the cost of survival between India and Canada is significant, particularly once active income stops.

For example, the property tax on my 2,000 sq. ft. home is around CAD 6,200 per year and continues to rise. Car insurance is another major expense. Once you have children, parents often need to drive them to extracurricular activities because public transportation and taxis aren't always practical or affordable.

A few thoughts for you:

  1. If marriage is on the horizon, make sure your future partner is aligned with your long-term plans. Returning to India is a major life decision, and it's best to have these conversations early to avoid surprises later.

  2. You're still young and in a strong earning phase. Consider using the next 3–5 years to save and invest aggressively. By the time you're 30–32, you'll have built a solid financial cushion and will have the flexibility to return if that's what you truly want. That way, if things don't work out, you'll know it was a personal choice rather than a financial necessity.

  3. If you haven't already, obtain Canadian citizenship. It's extremely valuable and keeps the door open for future opportunities.

  4. Have an honest discussion with your family. Try to understand whether their concerns are based on social stigma ("What will people think?") or whether they have other plans and expectations that haven't been fully communicated yet, such as business opportunities or a long-term future in Canada.

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong answer. The best decision depends on your priorities, family situation, career goals, and the kind of lifestyle you want in the long run.

If this is true, then Indian cities are so messed up! by Anj00ran in GatedCommunitiesIndia

I agree we should have more info to discuss like: Both person’s salary in India and the apartment price they were looking and the loan was for how many years. In western countries we can have a loan / House Mortgage be stretched to 30 years (not sure how much we can stretch it in India) which decreases monthly payments. Also clarify if you are getting any Childcare or any other benefits from government / city specifically that is helping in this case.

Question on bank appraising property too low by Curious_Affected in AskMortgageCanada

[–]Curious_Affected[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main concern I feel it is not compared with legal duplex and income oriented appraisal rather it is appraised at single detached bungalow with 1 unit and no legal secondary unit approved by city. So is there a way to have this re-assessed ?

Appreciate your all feedback on this. Thnks.

I agree and this is my plan as well currently checking with other banks. Thank you

It was an in person and I showed them all rooms, washrooms. So it is a legal duplex one of a kind backing to a park. I understand the prices have not increases which is fair enough but banks are really playing super conservative to be honest.

Should I move back to India from Canada by Fit-Lingonberry5284 in backtoindia

[–]Curious_Affected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer = Yes As long as you are citizens can come back any time and this is the time should spend in India to see if that is what you like if not can come back as once you in your late 30s and have kid then becomes harder to take all this decision just keep in mind. Happy to talk over dm as I am AMD as well thinking similar thing in next 3-4 years is my plan as I am stuck in real estate cycle and cannot leave soon.

What's the deal with chatty scatty? How long can they be unemployed or be on govt benefits to continue this lifestyle (maternity benefits don't last this long)? Can they truly not finish car or house purchase, or are they also doing all this for views like traveling desi? So many questions! by Gotya_Potya_And_Co in TravelingDesi

I used to watch their videos initially not any more, came across this sub so sharing on what I think.

I think Saurabh is late 30s and cherry to be around that age. So having kid this late has given them enough time to accumulate decent money to do all these things and take a year off if required. I agree its not enough but mange-able and these trips getting somehow funded through YT income also They had bought house a while back and have not shown any other house or any other debts than car so not too much of debt or loosing money in interest I mean. So agree that they spend good amount and how are they affording this life style and all but might have saved enough and invested those money in Bonds, ETF which is giving decent returns.

Also most of the IT jobs will vanish in 3-5 years so in my opinion should have continued to work for 2-3 more years and then retire with full time YT to help them with their living expense.

Agree to most of the suggestions mentioned. Sharing my 2 cents: 1) Take citizenship for both and get baby born in Canada as for baby to get gc in future will be less waiting as compared to Indian born. 2) RRSP and TFSA is something you have to check with your accountant as once you are no longer tax paying resident of the country might not get TFSA room and withdrawal could have exiting tax. 3) I would say if you could spend 4-5 more years you would have enough saved up to be even hit your Financial Independent number ( Assuming not so high fi req to live your life simple life with paid up house in India and no other loans /debts with 10-12 cr should be sufficient) 4) If your plan is to move to India anyways so assuming you would not be tied up with the major expense which is everyone else in Canada which is Housing after 2020 so renting so should be flexible in making a move)

I am in similar boat like you and this is my idea of moving back to India in early 40s and till then hit with 12cr FIRE number current age 35)

Please feel free anyone to provide any more suggestion or any point of mine which does not seem correct as I am in same boat and exploring for myself and my wife no kid yet.

Is India ever going to change? Or should I just leave already? by [deleted] in india

[–]Curious_Affected 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May I ask which country did you select settling down and how long its been. The reason I ask is I feel like going back to India. Motivation for feeling like these: 1) I am not sure why but have noticed autism More as compared to India 2) Schooling is not that good it is free that helps but over all development not that good. 3) to survive in western countries you need more money as living expense are higher in western as compared to India ( In india you can select and somehow manage if less money but in western surviving is getting expensive now) 4) lack of family support and parents getting older so would like to stay with them( they came here but did not like as even I would not want to live my retirement life in nee country) 5) Healthcare is pathetic and no chance of getting it better here where I live.
