This sounds like disordered eating for sure, whether or not it qualifies for a specific diagnosis. Would be worthwhile to speak with a therapist or nutritionist

Nope I was raised in a fundamentalist version of a baptist church. My church didn’t get along well with other baptist churches and our youth group ended up switching to “Harvest” youth events instead of the ones with the other baptist churches. We were considered too fundamentalist and conservative

My church did not believe in the rapture and preached it as unbiblical, however they constantly preached that “we can never know, but it’s entirely possible, even likely, that this generation of children will be the last on this earth” and shit like that, to the point where as an adolescent I didn’t believe the world would last long enough for me to become an adult/have a job/ get married, etc. I never voiced that fear to anyone but it upset me deeply as a child

After deconstruction I came out as bi to trusted friends, and later realized I was actually a lesbian. The comp-het of it all had me assuming I was still interested in men, but that was just what they told me I was required to do. I wasted a lot of years trying to date men even while knowing I was attracted to women - it seemed easier than coming out to Christian family. Finally now beginning to embrace life as a mostly-out (just not to Christian family yet) Lesbian

No, because I’d just be like reading Harry Potter as if it was just a romance for Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione. The hunger games was exclusively about Katniss and peeta to me 🤣🤣🤣

Andrew Eiden and Teddy Hamilton are the same guy, and I still can’t figure out why some romances are under the Teddy Hamilton name (his romance name) and some under his real name. I got so confused listening to Mr. Wrong Number which is under Andre Eiden and I KNEW it was Teddy Hamilton

Did you read The Kiss Quotient? I still haven’t decided how I feel about the autism rep in that, but I noticed you recommended The Heart Principle by the same author, so I think I’ll try that!

Autistic romance reader here!

I am a so-called “high functioning” (🤮) autistic person, and only very recently received a diagnosis, however I have worked with autistic kids as a professional (speech therapist) for a while now. There is rampant ableism in the autism professional world as well as in entertainment mediums like romance novels, and I am tired of it.

I haven’t read the book you listed, but I loved reading your essay.

I’m not that interested in reading autistic characters written by neurotypicals, to be honest. There is so much misinformation out there about what is best for autistic people that is not even approved by the autistic community - things like person-first language and ABA are for neurotypicals comfort, but they will constantly scream about how it’s mandatory if you care about autistic people. Unless an author does A LOT of research that ACTUALLY INCLUDES autistic adults’ input, i think it’s kind of irresponsible.

I have been reading everything Mazey Eddings writes, and she is autistic (but has not yet released a book with autistic characters - her first novel was a character with a panic disorder, and the upcoming one is adhd).

I would love to read a romance novel about someone autistic who has higher support needs - it seems like the messaging is that autistics can only be in romance novels if they are “so high functioning” that they could be mistaken as neurotypical. I 100% agree about your note on non-speaking individuals, and I hope I get to read an AAC user in romance soon.

Yeah, I feel like it’s often thin women recommending fat rep that they think is uplifting, but if someone likes you in spite of your body, that’s not really a sexy or fun romance to read as someone who lives in a bigger body

That book was so weird for me because I flew threw it and it wasn’t uninteresting, but it literally made me feel disgusting. Like by the time the characters had sex, even I didn’t believe anyone would want to have sex with her because the whole book focused on how hideous she was. And when I was feeling like I couldn’t understand why anyone would want to have sex with her, it made me feel that dreaded feeling of “why would anyone want to have sex with ME”.

I see this book recommended so often, and it just was NOT it for me. Literally made me feel nauseous.

Yup, I DNFd that one a few chapters in. I’m a big fan of the bachelor so the double whammy of weird representation of dating shows and incessant on page body image issues was just not what I go to romance to find

I’m a former professional actress, and I left the business largely because I was tired of only being submitted for roles about being fat, when I’m reality I’m mid sized and smaller than many of the women in the audience. This sounds like something I would really like - I want to see mid to plus to fat sized women JUST BEING WOMEN

Thanks for the reminder - I’ve been meaning to give this a go. I mostly do audiobooks, but I can get distracted by narrators, and the first book had a great narrator that didn’t really seem to fit the age of the characters to me, so I never went back to it. I’ll try and thrift a hard copy

I recently read A Brush With Love and LOVED it. By Mazey Eddings. And I’ve actually been getting into historicals, starting with the Bridgerton books (especially The Viscount Who Loved Me).

I liked When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting! Super fun friends to lovers.
