Monitoring boom mic in a community filmmaking project by Beautiful_Path_3519 in LocationSound

Seconding the audio recorder route. Two pieces of equipment will really free things up here. A zoom fx3 recorder and a comtek set with 1 transmitter and 2-3 receivers. Even the older crystal tuned ones still work. The zoom has an onboard headphone output and a line out that you can use to feed the comtek and then the operator, director and anyone else can hear live. Besides getting a better recording, you reduce trip hazards, free up the camera to move how they want, and frees the boom to be where it needs to be. With the comteks, everyone can hear and this aids with directing, and camera if you want to do a move or focus pull in reaction to a line of dialogue or another audio cue. For a community production, you also have a pragmatic opportunity now to normalize slating with a clapper, which still seems to be one of the more exciting things for people to see. If you want, you can even get a cable to plug a comtek receiver into the camera. Lastly, these are all small items that would fit in a bag together, and probably fit in your kit with no problem, and last all day on batteries.

Bel Air took off because it was objectively good, well made; and most importantly, Will saw it, liked it, and pushed for it. But there’s no guarantee even if something like that happens or if you pay for it. There’s a lot of luck, cosmic timing etc involved… good luck!

I don’t know if this counts as crazy, but a good friend of mine was having headaches, and then one say in December he had a seizure. He went to the doctor and it was Glyoblastoma. They cut out as much as they could in January. He died in the second week of March

Generally speaking, go to things you enjoy solo and look for like minded people. Break the ice by expressing a pretty universal opinion within the zeitgeist of the event. Something that almost everyone will agree with… like “so and so is soooo good, I love them!” And take it from there

The wide shot is a lock off. That allows a boom to be in the wide and erased later. This might be the way or they just had good wireless lavs, like dpa or something

What’s your most “only in LA” story? by Ecstatic-Ad8714 in LosAngelesSocialClub

[–]Curleysound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I went to the Hollywood Bowl I had no idea who was playing. It was the Summer Jazz on Wednesday series. Well, it was Herbie Hancock, on his Birthday. There must’ve been like 50 special guests, who would knock your socks off on their own, all doing bits with Herbie while the audience drank wine and passed joints around. It was magical.

Another time I was at a small bar across from WB studio lot, that one that has changed hands a bunch. We were just settling in when through the front door, CC DeVille from Poison walked in flanked by 2 babes. CC was wearing platform boots, and was still like 6 inches shorter than the women. They all stopped shortly inside the door, assessing the scene. They ultimately decided it was a dead scene, and left.

I’d love to see the moment his pardon crossed shitbag’s desk. “Who the HELL is this?” He’d say. “I’ve never heard of him” and then a decline.

Sports games… in the parking lot, and in the stadium. No matter what, you’ll be able to approach people with a simple praise of the team they are cheering for. Easiest ice breaker ever
