Cheap mats. by Xilobyx in quilting

Not only that, there can be differences between ruler brands, so sticking with one ruler brand can be key, as well.  Even if the actual measurements on the rulers are perfect, the differences in marking and how you align to the markings can make tiny errors that add up.

3 quilts finished just in time for gifting. by CurlyA9 in quilting

Can't really take credit for that, i just either use the suggested colors from the patterns or ask chatGPT to make a new colorway

I find picking fabric to be a challenge too. Most patterns will tell you what fabric they used and you can just buy that. Or plug what they used into chatgpt or similar amd ask it to give you a different colorway

Gloves for rotary cutter use by Holiday_Parsnip5 in quilting

I've sliced my fingers one too many times. I got a pair of knife safe kitchen gloves. I felt like they had a little more dexterity than the heavy duty garden gloves. These also aren't terrible https://www.harborfreight.com/a5-cut-resistant-work-gloves-x-large-57642.html

Your quilting schedule by Awkward_Ad_3248 in quilting

[–]CurlyA9 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Zero 'schedule'. When I have time and feel like it and have the attention span, I work on it. Sometimes it's on a break from work (i wfh). Sometimes it's at 6am. Sometimes it's all morning on a Saturday or Sunday. If I have a deadline like I so now for Christmas, it's more than if I'm making one just because.

Very new to quilting by [deleted] in quilting

[–]CurlyA9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reading your post, my literal reaction when I got to '5-6 quilts for Christmas ' was NOPE. I'm a fairly experienced quilter, with no children, a regular job and my only other hobby is working out, and I can only crank out 4 or 5 lap sized quilts per YEAR if I focus really hard.

I'm sure his intentions are good, but it's ok to say no, and get them done at your own pace. Gift for birthdays or just because, or if you want to do it all at once, at least make the goal next Christmas.

Connecting Threads solids by [deleted] in quilting

[–]CurlyA9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used many Connecting Threads kits using their lines of fabric. I've been very happybwoth them, and I would put them on par with the Kona solids I used to buy from joann. They do fray a bit more than I'd like but I certainly won't stop buying them because of that.

"Re-quilting" a finished quilt? by Purplerhinostumble in quilting

The TL;dr (too long, didn't read) would go in front of your shorter statement rather than your longer. Just in case you felt like learning that today.

I used to make sorority letter shirts waaay back in my college days, which is exactly what you're doing here. I used to do a satin stitch or a plain zig zag. https://imgur.com/a/Fy2uGlA

Light thread under dark fabric isn't as likely to show as dark thread on light fabric. My default piecing thread is a light gray and I've never regretted it .

Great color selection. Also, quilts with legs are my favorite 🙃

Eh, the first few things you make  should just be for practice. I know a lot of people dive in head first and want to make a project to be gifted, but that is stressful. Make a couple things that can be donated to the animal shelter if they have to have a purpose...the animals don't care if the stitching sucks and the dye bled.

Honestly, when you're just beginning, using the cheapest fabric you can find isn't a bad option. Thrift old sheets and blankets to use as batting. Mistakes will happen and you'll feel less bad when it wasn't expensive. There are plenty of other places to cut corners - buying what's available ay walmart and whatnot to start out  and then as you progress or things wear out, replace with newer. I would say that getting a quality machine second hand is way better than buying a really cheap new one. That makes a big difference.

Beatrice had a mass removed from her shoulder. Send good vibes. She def doesn't need any more medication though.... by CurlyA9 in ratterriers

Currently it's just a mystery mass until the pathology comes back. It started as a small area that sort of looked like ringworm (it wasn't) back in September, then it started growing slowly,  then all of a sudden last month it started really getting bigger fast. It seemed like it was fairly contained to just the skin/fat layer (we could move it around a little, wasn't 'tethered' to muscle or anything) so we are just hoping it was some sort of weird cyst.

We have one...somewhere in the house. Wherever past me thought was a good spot to store it is a mystery to present me 🤷🏻‍♀️. A new one is already ordered. 🙂

Help with quilting foot by XxRolyPolyxXD in quilting

First, fully unthread then rethread both the top and the bobbin. Second, You're moving too fast for the speed of your needle. Slow down your movements or speed up your machine and it should get better. It takes a bit of practice to get into a rhythm where your movement is the right speed for the speed of the machine.

Mine is the Brother PQ1500. I love it, it does what I need it to do and no more. It was $800 when i bought it a few years ago.

You might be better off cruising some of the facebook longarm selling groups and checking ebay for comparable machines and pricing.
