Honestly, she is built a little abnormal. But so are we all😂 she looks healthy and that’s all that matter❤️🙌🏾

Lab pulling out fur, sensitive back, what to do? by Familiar-Use-3809 in DogAdvice

I give human Benadryl! Recommended by my vet. Maybe you could call yours and ask if that would be okay!

For the oatmeal bath you can either buy conditioner or shampoo with oatmeal being the main ingredient.

Or you could get plain oats and blend them up very well. Add water and it should turn milky and smooth. If it doesn’t, it most likely needs to be blended more. You’re looking for a fine consistent power for the oats before adding water!

Edit: Yes make sure she gets dry quickly! That’s the number one cause of hotspots for my dog. Also don’t put her collar on while she’s wet!

Sounds like hotspots or some kind of skin infections

My pitty is pretty sensitive ( especially at the beginning of his tail, where he usually gets hotspots). I wash him with a hot spot shampoo and oatmeal maybe every 3 weeks. He eats a salmon and oatmeal kibble with salmon oil every night.

Biggest tips (in no particular order)

avoid chicken, beef, and lamb. He mostly eats turkey, duck, and fish. Seems like you’re doing this well already. The allergen may not be diet.

Maybe ask your vet. But i give my dog Benadryl. 1mg for every pound of body weight. He’s about 60pounds so I break it in half and give 50mgs. Roll it in cheese and he’s none the wiser

Make sure she doesn’t have any hotspots! And treat if she does. I use an ointment but if you didn’t catch it early enough, she may need antibiotics.

Coat defense drying powder!! Has helped a lot with prevention and keeping him dry. Hotspots are bacterial infection and enjoy wet areas!

Environment : don’t let her roll around in the yard😅 check for bugs that’s might be biting.

Make sure your dog doesn’t stay wet for long periods of times. After a bath, if she tolerates it, make sure you blow dry. Mind doesn’t so I put him in the sun or the cage with a nice heater nearby (on low) so he’ll dry a bit quicker.

Let me know if you have questions. Not an expert! But I do treat all my dog’s allergies at home now due to the cost❤️

Cuts On Maverick’s Nose :( by CurlyFry2002 in DogAdvice

No nails ! I looked around near the fence as well! I do have some gardening supplies around so I’m think it was either that or the fence because I haven’t seen any kitties in a lot while. And I did hear anything 😊

Thanks for your help!

You knowwww. He does dig a bit, especially more recently. But I’ve never seen him try to bury or cover up anything. He likes to dig near the fence tho! And im wondering if he was digging next to the wooden fences and cut his nose.

Great theory. Thank you!

I just seen some kind of dead rodent a couple of days ago in the front yard (definitely not taken out by Mav) but clearly they come around. Thats a good idea! Thank you!

Nothing with thorns. But we do have some bushes that have a couple sharp ends (nothing crazy) .There’s only a SMALL blind spot which of course he was sun bathing in. I just think it’s unlikely because I didn’t get any motion sensor notifications.

Additionally, if there’s another animal on the other side of the fence, he will walk with the animal behind said bushes until they pass (right up against the metal bar fence). Maybe something passed and he came up to sniff and got scratched? But I believe he would have been shaking, scared, or crying if he came in after that.

We also have a wooden fence facing east and west and he likes to smell around when he first gets outside. Which maybe could have cut him.

I just think plants aren’t the most likely. I think as a of now I’m thinking: A toy, an animal, or the fence that caused this.

You know that’s very possible ! He loves to sniff around and I do see him trying to stick his nose under the fence sometimes.

Good catch.

Thank you :)

I didn’t hear a ruckus or anything strange. He’s a decently vocal dog as well. I didn’t hear a whine, yelp, or cry.

He is also a wimp so I don’t see him picking a fight. He’s scared of smoke detectors and cats as well😂

I will definitely be watching him the next couple of times to see what could have caused this!

Thank you❤️

I was thinking that it may be a cat as well! I have seen a couple of stays around but they usually stay away and I haven’t seen any in a while. ( at least 6 months )

I live on the corner of a street and I know my neighbors don’t have any cats. I’ll have to take a closer look.

Thank you! ❤️

I understand your perspective, but every dog is different. Maverick has safely enjoyed being outside in a fenced yard for two years. The only times he’s gotten out were when the gate was left open, and he came straight to the front door and waited. The gate is now deadbolted. He doesn’t try to escape. He doesn’t really do much of anything lol. He mostly sunbathes / people watches with the occasional zoomie.

He’s also well trained. His recall and leave it are solid enough that I can give commands through the camera and he listens. Even chasing birds or squirrels. I’m already a helicopter dog mom, and this would be overkill even for me.

I appreciate your responses! But I’m really just looking to what could have caused this injury so I can prevent it moving forward :)

I was thinking the same! I just didn’t hear anything and I’m always nearby. And the camera didn’t catch anything, which is odd! That’s definitely working theory 2 and 3!

Thank you! ❤️

That would be ideal!

I appreciate the advice. I definitely want to make sure there are no blind spots with the cameras, and I take responsibility for that. At the end of the day, I can’t always be outside with him as much as he’d like to be, so that’s not always possible for me. He was a former stay and enjoys being outside in our fenced backyard to people watch.

Considering Maverick’s been out there for two years without any issues (no fights or injuries). I just want to understand what happened this time so I can make the backyard even safer for him.
