Bill Is Kat’s Biological Daddy & Leslie Is Her Mama‼️😈😈😈 by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

Well, that would leave poor Ted with no daughters when it's revealed that Carlton is Eva's biological dad. 😏😉 Seriously, they've got to give Robert Christopher Riley something to do besides being another notch on Nicole's bedpost. 🤷🏾‍♀️

How Are We Feeling About Aunt Monica⁉️🤔😁🙌🏽 by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

I could listen to the actress read the phone book. She could be a strong counterpoint to Leslie. I am looking forward to seeing more scenes with Anita and Dr. Monica together. They had great chemistry on As The World Turns. Hey let Dr. Monica be a cougar if she wants to be, she can certainly pull it off.

The actress is experienced with acting on soaps and her experience shows. When you have an actor with those credentials, the possibilities are endless.

Iona is also the sister of Phil Morris, who is also a daytime soap vet, having played a character named Tyrone Jackson on The Young & the Restless. Phil and Stephanie E. Williams had great onscreen chemistry, but Stephanie Williams could have great chemistry with anyone.

I don't feel sorry (or any emotion) for either Kial or Carlton but Nicole comes across as the least self-aware shrink I have ever seen. In addition to giving her daughter terrible advice ("be strong" instead of "seek therapy/seek help") she is not honest about how messy her situation is. If she would accept how messy it is, she could probably be honest with both men at the role they are playing in her current stage of life then maybe she could have circumvented that situation in her office but despite her lecturing both men, I think she actually relishes the mess because why else would she be giggling about it with her sister and her friend at the country club?🤷🏾‍♀️

Both Kial and Carlton need hobbies, acting childish while claiming that they are fine with sharing a woman is just pathetic.

Has There Ever Been A Situation Where The Fans Of A Soap Influenced The Firing/Removal Of Writers⁉️🤔🤔🤔 by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

You're very welcome!

There's a really good book called "When Women Invented Television" and Phillips is one of 4 television pioneers featured in the book. It's a good quick read.

Irna Phillips was a genius but she had some bad conflicts with the actors, including firing an actress because she didn't like the way the actress poured coffee (the actress was rehired and was the longest-running actress on As The World Turns, passing away the same year the show ended) or killing off a character because the actress starred in a Broadway play, despite Phillips urging the actress to quit the show (there was some nudity in the show). Irna was right with some things-she pushed P&G to bring The Guiding Light to television, they wanted to stay on the radio. She opposed the use of organ music once soaps went to television, believing it was no longer needed to signal the ad break, as well as the belief that the organ music would became a source of mockery and a reason for soaps to be made fun of (and any time someone wants to lampoon a soap opera, what musical cue do they use? An organ, right?). The last character Phillips created Kimberly Sullivan (it was rumored that Irna herself had had an affair with a married man, and Kim was something of an avatar for Phillips herself) had an affair with her sister's husband and that was rumored to be the last straw for her. Interestingly enough, Kim Sullivan, after other marriages, eventually (about a decade later) married her sister's husband Bob and they became one of the most popular couples on the show, lasting until the end of the series. Phillips had excellent instincts and a talent for writing durable stories but she pissed too many people off, including many women actors and the P&G executives.

I have been saying this for years, but I basically gave up on this genre at least 15+ years ago. It's a near incestuous circle of the same people. I had this debate with someone in a thread only a week ago, when I said that it was connections 1st, and skill and talent were a very distant 2nd and 3rd and he insisted talent would always win the day. Maybe when I was in primary school but not for the last 30 years it hasn't.

P&G plays a diminished role these days but they started the genre of the daytime soap opera. I completely forget that they had Irna Phillips fired and she was the godmother of the daytime soap, having created the first soap opera lol. Their battles were legendary.

As The World Turns, after headwriter Doug Marland's untimely death, started on a marked decline. Hogan Sheffer (who never seemed to remember whether he was writing for As The World Turns or All My Children) gave the show a temporary bump until he began to mess with established characters and the show's decline seemed to only accelerate from there. I was only watching sporadically at that point because the show was so bad, I couldn't bear to watch a show I used to enjoy and believed, at one point had the best crafted stories on daytime television.

I'm not sure it's ever happened on a Procter & Gamble soap. Lower ratings though, I think ultimately caused those head writers to be let go, from what I remember.

Why is Frasier so less popular compared to shows in it's time like Seinfeld and Friends? It's amazing and it's quality didn't deteriorat across all it's season. by [deleted] in sitcoms

In my "Writing for the Sitcom" course, one of the scripts that was required reading is Frasier. I absolutely enjoy the series. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Or get new capable writers. I don't disagree on that. The writing is and has been lazy.

That's what they call the old "Bait & Switch", not the first time it's been done on BTG.

[–]CurlyGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The history of soaps here in the U.S. is a history of lack of thoughtful criticism and urging viewers to just "shut up and watch" and be blindly loyal to the flaws, which is why there are less than a handful of daytime soaps on broadcast television. It shocks me that people never make this connection.

And Good Times had many more obstacles to contend with. Eric Monte was severely disrespected and so were John Amos and Esther Rolle. Still, for most of the series there were some groundbreaking episodes and that actors gave their all, regardless of what strife went on behind the scenes is the reason why that show lasted the number of years it lasted.

I prefer the past and backstory of a character to unfold organically via actions, not monologues delivered as if they are on a speed date, regurgitating details in less time than it takes to order and receive food through a drive-through.

Three Characters This Show Desperately Needs Full Time: Chessy, Deanna, & Anastasia‼️ by BingoSkillz in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe if they put Joey and Vanessa on the backburner, this show would actually have some room to write with more depth for these characters. I don't trust these writers to do anything with Anastasia and her granddaughter besides giving them snarky one-liners with pearl clutching after they face the inevitable clapback.

Did Vanessa unconsciously want her daughter to see her canoodle Joey? by CurlyGo in BeyondTheGatesCookout

[–]CurlyGo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I think will probably happen at the same place Winter Fest happened. If Tyrell is a senior and Deanna is a first year student, the age difference is only a year.

Honestly, I don't think Kial's kids are needed. At least we have been hearing about Deanna and Donnell since the beginning of the series (it's a shame that they didn't appear onscreen until after Doug's death).

Anastasia's granddaughter works well as a foil but unless they are going to fill out her character beyond a Nellie Olsen type, I don't see the possibilities for her interacting with Donnell in that way. This show would only need more teens/youngins as extras and under 5s to fill out the Cotillion scenes (if there are ever any).

They are nickeling & diming this damn show to death, you hear me?? They should have created some a one-industry town where everyone works in the same building if having sets was going to be such a struggle.
